Very sad to read about this.

In my experience senior women are wearing dresses, or separates. I rarely see a woman in a blazer type jacket and never in a skirt or trouser suit

happypoobum · 12/04/2017 18:52

I see a lot of senior women in suits but am in an academic setting.

More junior female managers might wear dresses but the Faculty Directors and above wear suits.

Bejazzled · 12/04/2017 19:02

Apart from my lovely Donna Ida jeans I've also had a couple of staple silk tops for work and a couple of linen summer dresses recently. All lovely and not remotely Maggie Thatcher

Floisme · 12/04/2017 19:41

I don't think it's just about whether you wear a suit or a dress or trousers etc. It's about conveying an image that's professional but also modern, switched on and approachable. You might want to avoid looking ostentatiously expensive. It's a very, very fine line to tread.

FrustratedFrugal · 12/04/2017 20:20

I'm a senior professional and I often feel overdressed in a Zara jacket. I'm in Scandinavia and here many senior executives wear expensive sportswear and outdoor gear - if you train for a triathlon on your way to work, you've really made it Wink

mammmamia · 13/04/2017 00:03

I also work in professional services in a senior role in the city. No women wear suits. I haven't worn a suit jacket for about 2 years.
Want2be, I have seen you on other threads. Are you in the U.S.? If so- working environment and dress code VERY different to the UK.
As for Jaeger I have one lovely soft short sleeved wool dress from there which I wear to work in the summer. It bobbled on the backside after a few wears. Not impressed and glad I bought it in the sale. I agree that they lost relevance on the high street especially with newer online only brands coming into the mix.

PigletJohn · 13/04/2017 00:49

no sign of a closing-down sale yet, but they always have stuff on offer.

I suppose they must have signed contracts for their Summer range, the stuff is probably on boats or in warehouses by now.

IIRC the brand is already owned by an investment or private equity company.

mammaI am in the US but manage a xglobal team with people in London, Paris, Frankfurt, India, Argentina and Hong Kong. The women in the London office are the ones I spend the most time having to promote. The Indian women are very sharp and behave in a way that is much more similar to men in the Westen world. I've just sat down with everyone to do feedback and the Indian women were the only ones pushing for promotion just like men do. The others were waiting to be asked.

Also, for me a suit is wearing a jacket with an outfit. Doesn't have to be matching. I have three black jackets I put with my numerous dresses. I wear them to work and they come off as soon as I walk through the door. If I get cold I have a cardigan I can put on. If going to a meeting the jacket goes on. When I get back it's off.

I agree it's a fine line of what to wear. It's important that nothing is outrageously expensive. It doesn't go across well. Good quality without being showy is the look I go for. That also ties in with my role. People hire me to provide quality services to them. Jaeger has been a good place to find clothes like that.

SeaRabbit · 13/04/2017 05:55

I have rarely found anything I wanted to buy in Jaeger recently. My very first suit came from Jaeger - present from parents for interviews and it was lovely with lots of nice details. I'd still wear that style. After that I would buy things there when I could afford it, and I did manage to find things suitable for a woman in her 20s.

That was in the early 1980s: recently the nice details have generally been missing, and I have not seen many things I would like to wear. Often the colours have been rather cheap-looking hard colours, much like M & S's. I have just looked in their website, and gah the clothes are shapeless. I did buy a couple of bags recently though - one is really lovely, the other, the zip failed after 3 months.

Jaxhog · 13/04/2017 12:41

I still wear a suit! And it's from Jaegar. I LOVE their trousers.

I think their problem is the same as M&S. While they cater for middle aged women (like me), they don't understand that we need a little more style along with the great tailoring.

Parker231 · 13/04/2017 16:28

Wasn't surprised to hear they had gone bust. Although I work in the corporate world I wouldn't wear Jaeger - most of their stuff was too old fashioned and they haven't kept up to date with what is now wanted. Most of their stuff is much too formal for what women now wear to work.

Teaandcake08 · 13/04/2017 16:50

Can anyone who's brought things recently say if you think a size XS o S would be best for a size 10? A jaeger sale as popped up on brandalley, lots of Breton tops I fancy! Haven't brought from them in years but there is quite a bit I like the look of!

Lumbricina · 13/04/2017 17:17

I used to like the London range when it came out but the sizing was massive, in some things size 6 was still too big (and I'm not super thin).

PigletJohn · 13/04/2017 17:55

I find their idea of sizing is a bit odd. They have a good returns policy, though. I got some Merino jumpers from them last year, had to send the first one back as their estimate of my big manly belly chest was not right, then got several more once I had found the right fit.

Incidentally, some of their stock is (almost?) identical to Moss Bros stuff. Probably from the same collections.

For clearance and sale items, the return period is shorter than for full-price sales.

AuntieBilly · 13/04/2017 18:56

I went into Jaeger a few times recently and gave up as their customer service was so poor. It's not a cheap shop and if I'm going in there I'm more than prepared to spend a few hundred on the right clothes (have just spent the best part of £200 on tops in Jigsaw today for example and may well go back for some trousers at the weekend). No-one would come to offer to help or put clothes in the fitting room for you. One time I was holding a top and asked if they had it in any other colours - the sales assistant said yes there's a yellow one over there and gestured vaguely to the entire back 3/4 of the shop but didn't offer to get it. No one would come and offer to get different sizes or make suggestions once I was trying stuff on. Compare and contrast to Jigsaw today where someone took 3 tops off me and put them in a fitting room as I was wandering around, then asked if I'd like to see some other new tops and went and got them. Then when I was trying stuff on the assistant nearby said 'that's a great style have you seen the red one, it would look great with your colouring and went and got it' etc.

The only time I ever had decent service in Jaeger was trying to buy a leather jacket. The assistants on the ladies side were no help but I wandered over to where DH was trying on a blazer with a very helpful assistant - he ended up helping me pick the leather jacket too - got me different styles, went down to the stock room to get a different size when I wasn't sure about the fit etc. Interestingly as he was bagging our stuff up he mentioned he was hoping to get a promotion to one of their London stores perhaps he'd upped his game, perhaps the staff in the regions didn't care so much or perhaps he'd got the promotion because he stood out a mile as their only decent assistant.

Catsize · 13/04/2017 18:58

I'm stuffed. Have to wear dark suits for work. The suits that fitted me were from Austin Reed, TM Lewin (sometimes) and Jaeger. Alas, no more suits going to be coming from any of them, so I'll probably have to get them made. Marvellous...

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2017 19:01

I work in a very corporate environment, I'm a ten to a twelve, five foot eight and i wear trousers suits predominantly, straight trousers, fitted jacket, and heels. Normally Hugo boss. I'd seldom wear a skirt or dress.

blueskyinmarch · 13/04/2017 19:03

My DH is bereft. He generally goes out each morning wearing a suit, shirt and tie - all from Jaeger. Their suits fit him like a dream. He has panic ordered a new suit and some shirts in case they go soon.

Wauden · 13/04/2017 19:52

Just had a quick look on the website. The women's clothes are not shown to their best advantage on the models (not a criticism of the models themselves). I know the quality is excellent when you see them and try them on, though.

Bejazzled · 14/04/2017 00:50

DH loves their shirts and polos.

As my previous posts, there are gems amongst the (no doubt quality) ladies plainer range. E.g. This perfect linen dress for weekends away

I've been admiring the eyelet dress! There's a gilet type thing and a skirt iirc in that eyelet style range too. It's a shame they're in admin, more hidden gems like these and I'm sure they would be fine 👍

ppeatfruit · 14/04/2017 18:58

Oh dear this is sad news. I used to work there (many moons ago) their sizing was very small then ( I was an 8 then and the 8s JUST fitted me). So they've gpne mad with the vanity sizing have they? That's a mistake.

They were great firm to work for; free chiropody, good subsidised restaurants , brilliant staff commission even on sale clothes.

I reckon that there is a market for well cut and designed clothes, made with classy materials, maybe they've been taken over by a firm wihich only sees the bottom line.

badass7 · 15/04/2017 01:14

Lisa8500: Jaeger's definitely not middle-of-the-road!! Best cuts ever!! I'll miss them horribly, here's hoping someone rescues them if there is a glimmer of possibility left! Gutted

ppeatfruit · 15/04/2017 14:20

I agree badass.
