Does wearing LONSDALE make you common?

fortyplus · 07/03/2007 21:43

So... why is it that a brand of leisure wear not dissimilar to many others seems mainly to be worn by extremely fat, shuffling women sporting a 'Croydon facelift' with a fag hanging out of the side of their mouths?

Questions:

1 Are there any sophisticated types who would be seen in public wearing Lonsdale?

2 Do the 'common' looking ones start out that way, or do they metamorphose once they don the leisure wear?

Just asking...

Don't have many nice shops round here. We got Dotty P's, New Look, Peacocks, East (older ladies place) Goulds (ditto) Not many really. Got Weymouth down the road but don't get mush time off and no money to spend.

ImaWurzel · 07/03/2007 22:22

i am common too then wurzel, even though no one turns round to me and says they have seen my top/jeans etc in the shops.
nevermind.
will sod off to m&s, woods of windsor and janet reager or whatever her name is tomorrow for a new wardrobe.

stressteddy · 07/03/2007 22:27

Is Lonsdale more expensive than Donnay?

berolina · 07/03/2007 22:27

In Germany it is strongly associated with neo-Nazis, so I give anyone I see wearing it a pretty wide berth.

ImaWurzel · 07/03/2007 22:27

Cheers ginnedupmummy. Someone else who wears the likes of my stuff. Thought i was a bad person then. shame on me.

twinsetandpearls · 07/03/2007 22:30

I sometimes wear next to work, I think that is what nextis good for pratical non distracting clothes.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 07/03/2007 22:30

i am sorry but there is no way i would go around wearing a top with lonsdale/mackenzie/donnay or anything emblazoned across the front.
why does the world need to know where you buy your clothes?
plus, on the one occaision i did wear my bro's mackenzie hoodie to get a lottery ticket i got id'd, because frankly, it is teen clothing imo.
phew, rant over!

fortyplus · 07/03/2007 23:13

I would tend to say that I'd avoid anything with a brand name on it, but maybe I'm a hypocrite as I've just noticed that I've got 'Rohan' embroidered on my trouser leg!

ginnedupmummy - I think if you're a boxer it's fine to wear it - and I'll let you off as you are being loyal to your dh. But why do slobby smokers wear sports wear?
It looks totally ridiculous.

Apparently.

Am on a placement at a private hospital (am student nurse) which also treats some NHS patients, a nurse called an NHS patient from a rougher part of the area 'sir' and he replied with 'do i look like a sir I am wearing lonsdale!

as berolina said, in Germany neo-nazis tend to wear it.

Reason being, if they wear a shirt over it they can cover up some of the letters

so LO NSDA LE

only the NSDA would be visible which was part of the acronym for the Nazi party under Hitler.

flutterbee · 07/03/2007 23:23

Well I don't know about you but I would rather see a larger lady wearing sportswear than having to squeeze herself into a strappy tart top and skirt, because lets face it if you are larger there is nothing for you to wear.

I am very overweight and shop at Evans but a lot of other fat ladies don't like or can't afford Evans clothes so it's a toss up between tarty rolls of fat hanging out or sportswear.

Some are just plain common.

fortyplus · 07/03/2007 23:28

That's horrible - I hate it even more now.

Luckily my kids aren't into all that, either - they aren't bothered by brands, though their favourites are mostly surf wear - Salt Rock, Animal, Ripcurl, Billabong etc.

I'm happy to buy it as it's good quality and reasonably priced if you can find it in TKMaxx.

The only time that they wear branded sports wear is for rugby practice. Long may it continue!

lol @ fortyplus and her placement post!

fortyplus · 07/03/2007 23:32

flutterbee - obviously my 'horrible' comment was re: the neo nazis.

There are cheaper clothes for big ladies than Lonsdale - though I agree I don't like seeing rolls of fat bulging out of supposedly fashionable clothes.

ps I'm not exactly skinny myself - size 16.

Right. I own a Lonsdale t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms which I wear to the gym(when I go). BUT IMO it's not what you wear it's how you wear it. I buy stuff from anywhere be it markets, factory outlets, high street chains as long as it looks right and I combine it properly with other clothing. I like bargains but I like to look good as well.I would say I tend toward the posh rather than common but definitely not a snob.

inanidealworld · 08/03/2007 09:54

Oh and I agree Next is good value for decent work clothes.

PersonalClown · 08/03/2007 09:59

I have a lovely pair of trainers that I'm living in as they are so comfy and I have a large hooded fleece but it's reserved for when I'm freezing cold at home.
There's a sports shop round here that sells Lonsdale stuff incredibly cheap. A lightly padded jacket can be bought for around £5, T shirts are £2.50 ish etc.

ImaWurzel · 08/03/2007 09:59

I suppose i should wear different stuff.
I was in somerfields the other day getting some tea and wine on the way home from work i had on my work gear (black trousers & black shoes & red t-shirt) And i had on my - ahem - lonsdale zip up fleece, also listening to my i-pod (it makes me walk faster- exercise i beleive) And the very young looking cashier asked if i had i.d.
Lucky i had it on me that day, So i said 'bless, here you go' and when she saw my d.o.b she said 'sorry'.
I was born in 1978! way before her parents were probably thinking about her!

Mercy · 08/03/2007 10:01

Well if being common means you haven't got much money and/or access to a wide range of shops then yes, I am common (well, my dc are, that is).
