How do I keep my foundation on?!

LyraTheDaemon · 25/03/2017 14:35

I might be being a bit thick here but I need help! I love my foundation (it's the Bobbi Brown intensive skin serum if that helps) and usually I set it with an urban decay fixing spray (sorry can't remember the name of it) and it lasts while I'm at work even with the air con on all day but when I'm out and about I come home after a few hours and it's as if I haven't got any foundation on at all. I'm on my second bottle of it and I swear it lasted better on me last year.

My skin isn't particularly oily, and all the matte powders I've used just make me look cakey and I really don't like the matte look on me. I've tried googling loose powders but my issue is this, do they then 'override' the effects of the foundation? I love how the Bobbi Brown foundation leaves my skin looking dewy but I would love it to bloody stay on my face if I go in the sun! If it helps I'm also incredibly pale so this foundation is one of the rare ones that colour matches me perfectly which is why I love it so much! Do I need to apply it differently or use a better primer? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

This happens to me OP ..so annoying .
I am trialling MAC prep and fix spray atm , works sometimes and not others ???
I also love Charlotte Tilbury powder ..doesn't look cakey or disguise the natural skin look. It's expensive though.

I thought it may be something to do with the amount of cream I use underneath the foundation making it slide off?

LyraTheDaemon · 25/03/2017 15:04

That's what I find with my spray, very temperamental! Will have to look at CT, I've been avoiding the John Lewis stall as I feel I may be tempted by it all! I have also wondered about my cream but it seems to slip off even when I don't put it on.

Maybe go to BB counter and ask them why it's happening?

Strigoi · 25/03/2017 20:23

How soon after moisturising are you applying foundation? You need to let the moisturiser soak in for at least 15 mins before putting on makeup. Don't slather on the moisturiser either or use one that's too heavy for daytime.

I use Smashbox primer, then Face Atelier foundation applied with a sponge, then a dusting of loose powder. My foundation stays put all day and I just do a quick touch up if I'm going out after work.

andintothefire · 25/03/2017 20:23

The Hourglass primer is pretty good

ThatsNotAKnifeThatsASpoon · 25/03/2017 20:26

Spray hairspray (Elllnet is fine) on your face to set your make up. Seriously!

ArriettyClock1 · 25/03/2017 20:28

I can't imagine spraying hairspray on my face!

I use Clarins double serum. Apart from being a miracle product - it makes foundation stay on all day.

dailystuck71 · 25/03/2017 20:39

I only cleanse tone and moisturise at night. I don't put anything in my skin in the morning, just primer and straight to foundation. If I do moisturise in the morning my make up slips.

Scoose · 25/03/2017 20:56

Do you use primer?

FuckTheFuckityOff · 25/03/2017 21:04

I'm the same as daily I find my make up lasts longer if I don't use moisturiser in the morning. I spray my face with Avene Thermal Water stuff and wipe off the excess with cotton wool and then do primer and make up.

LyraTheDaemon · 25/03/2017 21:14

Ah I'll try skipping the moisturiser! If I remember to I use the Nyx spray primer but it doesn't seem to make much difference, I'll look into the hourglass one, thank you! Are there any you recommend?

I did used to spray my face when I went on a night out but I'm a bit scared to do it daily!!

Do you shake the foundation really well before applying? I had this problem with my Chanel one and once I started giving it a good shake before using it then it made a huge difference.

FuckTheFuckityOff · 25/03/2017 22:25

I use the Max Factor primer, I got it free with some other products at Boots as I spent over £20 on Max Factor but it's really good. It sinks straight in.

Strigoi · 25/03/2017 22:57

I couldn't skip moisturiser in the morning as my skin gets quite dry and the the aircon/heating combo in my office sucks all the moisture out of everything. I do go for a lighter cream though and leave it to soak in for about 15-20 mins before I start doing makeup.

Scoose · 25/03/2017 23:35

The ysl touché eclat primer is great and so is Lancôme la base. I'm not overly keen on the hourglass one although I love their powders.

andintothefire · 26/03/2017 10:42

This is the Hourglass primer I use:
www.dancingcanvasart.com/single-post/2017/01/24/Product-Review-Veil-Primer-from-Hourglass

It seems quite expensive but you only need a tiny amount and I don't use it every day.

I have also heard good things about Smashbox (as suggested by Strigoi) but haven't used it personally. It may be worth a trip to a makeup counter to ask them to make your face up with a primer and foundation so that you can test it?

LyraTheDaemon · 27/03/2017 20:46

Great ideas, thank you! I'll go to a counter and maybe try to get some testers for primers! I know smashbox to a set of minis but not sure if the primer comes in it... this gives me an excuse to go shopping!

AgathaMystery · 27/03/2017 21:00

Smashbox do extremely generous testers. It will last about 10 days.

I use the putty coloured one, then I use Armani luminous silk foundation (which is AMAZING). Then I fix it with a tiny spray bottle by FX - it's £2.50! It's amazing!

Shelvesoutofbooks · 27/03/2017 21:55

The mac fix + is a fixing spray. Use it to make your make up look dewyer /fresher/get rid of cake face, it's not a setting spray. You should still use something like the UD all nighter after it.

OP - have you tried putting a light dusting of loose translucent powder before your foundation?

Try this way moisturizer - primer - light dusting of powder - foundation - tiny bit of powder to set it - fix + (to get rid of cakeyness) - and then UD all nighter setting spray (or whatever other setting spray)

Tartle · 27/03/2017 22:19

Arietty tell me more about the clarins serum. What makes it so good?

ArriettyClock1 · 27/03/2017 23:54

I don't know what's in Clarins Double Serum apart from some sort of magical elixir.

Use use such a tiny amount that I thought it couldn't possibly make any difference to my skin but it really does!

It seems to make moisturiser work better and makeup stay put. It gives a plump sort of finish. Best of all - within a few days a spot of chloasma pigmentation I've had since I was pregnant 15 years ago disappeared!

dailystuck71 · 28/03/2017 13:17

The other side is that the Clarins serum did jack shit for me.

LyraTheDaemon · 30/03/2017 20:33

@Shelvesoutofbooks I did exactly what you said and it was amazing! Stayed all day and night even with a few too many drinks! Thank you!!

Thanks to all, I did ask my mum before this and she said if I don't wear any it can't come off Grin

OP posts:
Shelvesoutofbooks · 01/04/2017 12:16

@Lyra glad I could help

Strigoi · 01/04/2017 12:42

I'm going to try that as well. I've never used a fixing spray before but have noticed a bit of cakeiness recently so will give it a bash.
