How to go naturally grey ?

Been dying my hair for over 20 years and I'm sick of root touch ups every 10 days.
I want to strip the colour out and just go grey.
Has anyone done this?
Any advice?

Go for it! I've been growing mine out for about 18 months now, having dyed it for decades. It's now half & half natural and dyed - it is noticeable but the line is not that dramatic. I did think about highlights to break it up but have just gone off dying so much (I was starting to react to the chemicals) and didn't bother. The worst stage was when it was quite rooty and just looked like I'd not had time to go to the hairdresser!

I really love the grey, it suits me much more than the colour I was dying it, and feels in much better condition. I'm 50 and maybe it makes me look a bit older than dying it did - but i can live with that because it suits me more. I'm getting it cut more regularly because having a definite style helps.

It will take a long time though - I have chin length hair and I reckon I'm at least a year away from being dye free, unless I get a shorter cut.

I'm 41. Let mine grow out naturally it took 2 years to be completely free. I didn't get a pixie cut as I'd look like my dad Blush no offense dad! I am a teacher of sorts so see many people every day. No one commented during the 'transition'. I have had only positive comments to my face or people asking why i stopped dying it.

My hair is in fantastic condition and so so soft.

Here's a pic... (not v good at selfies Grin)

I love seeing the photos of all of you with such lovely grey hair.

I've never dyed my hair - always been a natural blonde. Now there are a few more grey/white hairs coming through. I was debating whether to go ahead and colour my hair but I think I will leave it and see how it goes for a while.

RealHouswifeofBury · 25/03/2017 18:40

I'm loving the photos. Hope I can do it

I think its definitely harder with long, dyed hair, you have to put up wuth the skunk line.
I have always had short hair so I bleached the colour out and went grey from that.
I occasionally bleach it again and then grow it out again. Its always a bit more silver each time. Its still too dark at the crown and back though Hmm
Good luck!

A friend let her roots grow for about 4 months
Then she sprayed it with a root cove daily until it was longer
Followed by a long pixie
She looked great
I think it helped as she does not work and so could have days where she didn't feel she had to do the above whereas if you are in a Job that is public facing I think you would have to perhaps do the highlight s option ?

RealHouswifeofBury · 25/03/2017 20:43

I am considering stripping and highlighting. Also considering headscarves 🤔

I'm 50 and tried growing out the colour but it was taking ages, so I decided to have lighter highlights put through and am really pleased with the result. For my age, I don't seem to have too much grey, so I've decided l'll only have the highlights done several times a year. When you're going grey and still want a bit of colour, it's best to have highlights rather than one permanent colour, which I think can be very ageing.

picklemepopcorn · 26/03/2017 06:09

If you leave it as long as you can bear, then just have highlights put in the top section, to break up the root line where it's visible, you don't need to get it redone often if at all. You just want to break up that line.

floraeasy · 26/03/2017 06:46

I second PPs with either:

(1) use semi colours until grown out and then let them fade out
(2) Go platinum blonde and start growing out.

SerialReJoiner · 26/03/2017 07:00

I'm loving the pictures! I don't dye my hair and have noticed more and.more white hairs popping up recently (am 36). My natural colour is dark blonde and i was worried white hair would wash me out but I'm heartened to read people feel their natural grey/white suits their skin tone.

Canyousewcushions · 26/03/2017 07:24

I let mine grow out but about an inch and had it cut into a slightly longer cut but with very feathery layers which broke it all up a bit and meant i never had that line between grey and dark. The longer lengths were long bob length so it didn't feel too short. It's worth an amazing hairdresser who does a properly good cut to assist i think!

PorklessPie · 26/03/2017 07:28

I'm letting mine grow out, haven't dyed in 4 months and am just using a cheapie root powder for this in between stage. I'm around 70% grey (I'm 32) with one large completely silver section on one side at the front. I'm getting around it by clipping it over from the side or clipping it all half back. It's currently shoulder length and I'm going to get another two inches off next week.

BlueBlueSkies · 02/04/2017 22:23

I have been letting mine go grey for the past 20 months.

My natural colour was dark brown, but I have been going grey for so long, my hairdresser was dying it blonde.

For the first year, my hairdresser just did full head of ash highlights, every 6 weeks. Previously she had done the roots a base colour too and blonde highlights.

Then 8 months ago she stopped putting any colour on. She did cut about 5 inches off the length gradually, but now it is growing back longer. I have a striking white streak by the front and it gets darker as it goes back. I found it pretty painless to get to this stage.

Saves loads of money too. I was spending 150 every 6 weeks, now it is only 50 every 8 weeks.

Badders123 · 05/04/2017 21:02

I had a crop
I had the brown dye stripped out and a Tiber put on
This was 6 months ago
Now the colour is almost all my own
I love it
😀
But the initial appt was 4 hours and the bleach does damage your hair
