How to go naturally grey ?

RealHouswifeofBury · 23/03/2017 19:20

Been dying my hair for over 20 years and I'm sick of root touch ups every 10 days.
I want to strip the colour out and just go grey.
Has anyone done this?
Any advice?

If you put your hair up, or use clips for part of it, it breaks up the root line.

I think basically you have to get used to not looking like you used to do, and realise that most people won't be looking as critically as you are.

I'm grey. I grew mine out with the help of the hairdresser and a few highlights. I was dark brown but dyed it. It is worth persevering as a. My hair is in better condition and b. No more faff. You have to look after grey hair though so decent haircuts, conditioning etc but still less hassle than colouring

woodhill · 24/03/2017 08:31

I'm sick of mine, nearly 50. White at front and colour fades quickly at side by ear. Tend to do it once a month but scalp feels itchy. Wish I could go and live on a desert island for 6 months' to see the effect.

Brighteyes27 · 24/03/2017 08:37

My natural hair colour was brown but it's probably silver grey now. I am 51 and have jaw length dyed auburn/red but naturally curly coloured hair (everyone loves the colour it doesn't feel in brilliant condition-hairdresser says it's fine condition). I love seeing the red as I love the brightness of it and it cheers me up I think I might feel dull and grey with grey hair now but considering growing grey gracefully with a little help. I also have a chubby face so couldn't wear it much shorter but don't think I'd like the silver/grey roots with red combo look. Any suggestions for me?

Hockneypool · 24/03/2017 08:39

I'm 51 and have gone grey too. It got to the point where the colour wouldn't stay and the grey roots were apearing very quickly. I had grey and blonde highlights put in to break up any lines and then grew it out from there. I also used purple shampoo and conditioner to stop the highlights becoming brassy in the summer. It took about a year to grow out. I like it and it's so much easier and cheaper too.

realise that most people won't be looking as critically as you are. That's a good point, same as if you've got a big spot, thinking that it's bigger than it is.

I have long hair, and decided to ditch the dye when I was 38ish. I didn't dye for 8 weeks, then colour stripped my hair a couple of times, then used bleach on the front part which I knew from the roots to be bright white. Then with lots of use of purple toner to knock the ginger notes out, I just toughed it out with the rest. If I'd known about it then, I'd have used the Manic Panic virgin snow toner, maybe combined with bleach highlights in all the really grey areas to break the line up. As it was, I just kept it pinned up which looked Ok as the white front section could be swept back over.
I'm 44 now, and get so many compliments about my hair

Fuzzypeggy · 24/03/2017 09:29

Platinum highlights would make the growing out stage much easier imo

Itsalldramarama · 24/03/2017 13:28

I started growing mine out 22 month ago at 48 , after 7 month as much as I hate short hair on me I cut it all off to be rid of the old dye . Go for it :) and the good thing is if you don't like it you can always re colour :) I love the freedom of not chasing the roots every 4 weeks plus my hair is healthier and suits my skin tone better , this is before , after I cut , and the last one is now

Looks great rama Star

DevelopingDetritus · 24/03/2017 14:20

My hair is down to the middle of my back. Can you imagine how stunning it would look if it turns out to be your colour and thickness, wow.

Brighteyes27 · 24/03/2017 14:37

Rama your hair like looks lovely and although the grey it looks like a younger woman's hair. How I would like mine but as I had kids late in life at 38 & 39 I don't want to look like their grandma.

Itsalldramarama · 24/03/2017 14:43

Don't worry about it , I had my last child at 41 , he's nearly 10 and not been called his gran yet , well not to my face !

Itsalldramarama · 24/03/2017 14:44

Thanks for the nice comments

I started with putting blonde highlights through my dark brown hair. This was last July. Gradually went a bit blonder and a bit shorter until I'm now nearly all grey. It looks completely normal to me now although my friends still find it a shock! I love not having to worry about my roots and am so glad to no longer be putting all those chemicals on my head every 2 weeks as I have been done for the past 20 years! Do it!

vaginafetishist · 24/03/2017 19:28

Wow your hair looks beautiful drama.

Itsalldramarama · 24/03/2017 20:19

Thanks vaginafetishist

BAR91 · 24/03/2017 20:32

I'm 25 and have no grey hairs. I'm lying I have loads and got my first at 21. I am just leaving mine to grow in now. Grey can be so lovely!

Tootsiepops · 24/03/2017 20:40

I'm 37 and totally grey and I absolutely love it. I didn't bother doing anything to disguise my roots lazy cow and just waited it out. It took about 18 months.

Badders123 · 24/03/2017 20:45

Yep
Although I am VERY grey and have short hair
I have been dyeing it since I was 18 - started going grey at 17 - and tbh at 44 I'd had enough
Took a LONG appt at the hairdresser to strip out the dark brown dye but I'm really pleased with it

Pixel · 24/03/2017 20:47

I'm 50 and have been wondering what I'm going to do too. At the moment it's still nearly all dark brown (my natural colour) and I've been plucking out the grey ones as there haven't been all that many, but they are starting to multiply quite quickly now so I'll have to stop doing that soon or I'll end up bald. Mine aren't really grey though they are pure white which I find rather worrying! It seems too much of a contrast between the dark brown and white to just leave it but I don't want to get on a dye and highlights merry go round, which is why I've been burying my head in the sand.

Maybe I'll buy a wig and then one day when my own hair is finally completely white I'll just whip it off and shout "ta dah!" Grin

ChopOrNot · 24/03/2017 21:28

I did it the drastic way with a pixie and a few grey highlights to break up the tidemark whilst I grew it out. (After debating on here...www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please I am glad I chopped as I could not bear the thought of the tide-mark line.

A couple of years in have grown out the drastic pixie (which I loved) and now all au natural - and I love it. It is not as grey/white as I thought it would be - but I have amazing sparkly highlights and the non-grey bits are certainly lighter than my previous dark hair. And all is totally better than the constant root touch ups and blorange dye. I can thoroughly, thoroughly recommend it. My hair suits my skin tone much better and I feel fab. A few picks of the before, during and more recent.

Oow, all these people with naturally curly hair, how fantastic.

Mine aren't really grey though they are pure white which I find rather worrying! No, this is the best, you'll be like the Snow Queen.
