Swim dresses - just another way to show off how fat you are?

I'm well overweight (edging towards size 26 Shock) but working on it and hope to lose a bit by the time I have to go on an enforced and unavoidable villa/pool-based holiday. To make it worse, a couple of the party really don't like me very much (and are normal sized and toned).

Anyway, I tried this on yesterday and liked it, but do swimdresses in fat sizes basically scream Hattie Jacques or can they work?

I opt out of the angst by wearing a rash vest with bikini top under for support and board shirts. Plus baseball cap and sunglasses. Sun protected and not having to show off my figure - I like my body but don't see why only women are expected to bare all. People cant comment as you're not in the "game" of comparing "beach" bodies... If anyone does ask just say it's comfy and saves me getting burnt. None of their business anyway.

CoolCarrie · 19/03/2017 12:42

I love it and would definitely buy and wear those styles, they are retro chic and lady like.

LastnightaDJ · 19/03/2017 12:46

Sorry, Board Shorts....

No no no no no and all sorts of fucking NO.

Why would you do this to yourself? Shock I don't care what sort of form the 'enforcement' entails, no way on God's earth would I EVER put myself through the torture of holidaying with thin women who dislike fat me AND WEARING A SWIMSUIT IN FRONT OF THEM. It's hard enough to do it with the thin women who love me.

Are you MAD? Or do you just have very high self esteem and no vanity? In which case I am in total awe of you.

But even if the weight were not an issue, life is seriously too short to be going on holiday with people who don't even like you.

Tartle · 19/03/2017 12:59

I really like the eBay one. If it suits you and you feel good in it I would say go for it. And ignore the haters!

Have one similar design I got from Evans a few yrs ago. Love it! If you feel comfortable in it, you'll feel better, enjoy yourself more and therefore look better.

And to be honest, why let what they think of u have any headspace? Easier said than done, but worth working towards. Am overweight so I def understand the pressure etc but the older I get the more I despise people who'd judge others on their weight, style (whatever that is anyway) etc.

Having grown up with mother who used terms like 'fat lump' etc to refer to me - as a not particularly fat child- you have to realise that nasty people will be nasty and nothing u do or say will chge that. If u were a size 6 in the morning, I guarantee it wouldn't chge their attitude to you. So concentrate on you and your life.

Sympathies re holiday, have similar coming up....

Well, it does (mainly) seem that the opinion is that swim dresses ARE for the fatties among us; but that is countered with "So what? Fuck 'em!" which is also as valid!

I will investigate other options and suggestions, thank you, but I am not yet entirely swayed off the original spotty print.

As for the people saying I shouldn't go, it is a few days out of my life where I will minimise contact with the main people who don't like me, spend more time with OH and the people who do (and also time away from them all entirely). It is just one of those things we all have to do for family harmony once in a while. I have plenty of other holiday left over to enjoy at my own pleasure too.

There's a lady in her 30's I reckon at my local
Pool who wears a plain black swim dress. I would estimate she's a good bit more than 18-20. She is very groomed and I always think how elegant and classy she looks next to me in my utility speedo!

Branleuse · 20/03/2017 10:06

The fact is, if youre fat and in a swimming costume, people are going to see youre fat. Clothes are to make you feel like youre not naked, and a swimming costume is one of the most revealing items of clothing you can get, so its hardly surprising that a lot of women are jumping at the chance to swim in something slightly less revealing. Swim dresses flapping round your legs are no more annoying than wearing board shorts, and noone trying to pressurise men into wearing speedos because board shorts flap around their legs. Its a bit annoying, but doesnt feel like everyone is practically seeing your genitals, and swim dresses arent just for fat middle aged women, ive seen many different ages and shapes wearing them, and they always look fine

JonesyAndTheSalad · 20/03/2017 10:08

I just don't put a suit on! I'm a 14 but I'm very self conscious. Nobody has ever said anything. I wear shorts or dress and sit by the pool.

finagler · 20/03/2017 10:09

It is 100% hattie but I love her so who cares?

justwanttoweeinpeace · 20/03/2017 10:12

We just came back from holiday and all the Far East Asian tourists were wearing these. I think they're great, I'll be glad when they catch on. I'm a twelve and I'd love to wear something with a bit more coverage.

SSmith5 · 11/10/2018 20:50

What is wrong with covering up? I wear a swim dress as I don't see why I have to show off my body to everybody just because I want to go swimming

SSmith5 · 11/10/2018 21:43

I don't understand why women think they have to show off all their body. Many men don't like wearing speedos and women don't think they're frumpy for wearing shorts. I'm not religious but I know men are going to leer at women's bodies and if they look at me they won't have much to see
