Swim dresses - just another way to show off how fat you are?

ShotsFired · 17/03/2017 08:41

I'm well overweight (edging towards size 26 Shock) but working on it and hope to lose a bit by the time I have to go on an enforced and unavoidable villa/pool-based holiday. To make it worse, a couple of the party really don't like me very much (and are normal sized and toned).

Anyway, I tried this on yesterday and liked it, but do swimdresses in fat sizes basically scream Hattie Jacques or can they work?

I have one of those from last year, but pretty much the same. I'm a 12, sometimes 14 and it has NO support at all (I'm only a 34E/F so not that much for it to deal with). I think if you tried it on, you'd discount it because of that anyway.

Fairylea · 17/03/2017 13:46

I can't link but I noticed Biden have some really nice swimsuits with lots of detailing around the boob area to detract from tummy and thighs (my own problem areas which I'm hoping to hide!) I don't know what size they go up to but may be worth a look.

Fairylea · 17/03/2017 13:49

Managed to do it... this one is good as the black stripes elongate the body too. It does only go up to a 20 however, not sure if they size up big maybe. Marks and Spencer's did a similar one last year.

I am a larger size and I wouldn't go for a skirt swimsuit, I think like others said you have to embrace the size you are and skirt swim wear makes me think "I'm covering up". If covering up makes you feel better however, go for it. It's about confidence.

Tell them to bugger off, its cute - very golden era. Im quite slim but i wear short-like swim bottoms ( i dont like that regular suits let my bum hang out and my foof become a feature piece -_-) so i think women should wear whatever they damn want. some wear a thong/micro bikini if theyre comfortable with that and thats fine but personally id prefer to see them in this cute swim-dress x

FusionChefGeoff · 17/03/2017 14:07

All I'd say is make sure it fits properly. A sure fire way to look awful in a swimsuit is if it cuts in around the arms / thighs / back.

I'd be a bit nervous ordering it too small and then squeezing into it. I'd think you'd be better getting the 24.

Helenluvsrob · 18/03/2017 10:24

Interesting! My gorgeous , slim daughter bought herself a swim dress and looks fab in it. I'm fat and yep it wouldn't be " rocking the retro " it would be Hattie Jacques.

I wear boy leg suits to swim in normally but have a " big pants " bikini for when I go on holiday. My sis lived in Spain. It too several holidays of beach body watching to realise everyone wore bikinis regardsless of size ( with a mattering of toplessness). The area meant that it was a Spanish / English mix. I feel less obvious in a bikini and it is cooler 😄

I "notice" someone in a swim dress more than I notice someone in a more-common style of swimming outfit.

If you like the style and want people to notice you in it, go ahead.

If you intend to hide your thighs - you'll be less noticed in a regular swimming costume.

The people who don't like you will probably be twats no matter what you wear, so they don't really come into it.

witchmountain · 18/03/2017 13:00

I came on to recommend Modcloth too, I remember them having some lovely plus sized suits.

Deathraystare · 18/03/2017 17:26

I actually think it has a great 50's vibe about it. Normally I would avoid 'em but this looks nice. Ok the others will be toned blah blah blah. Sod 'em. Enjoy your holiday. And remember ....tans are slimming:)

neveradullmoment99 · 18/03/2017 22:43

I have one but mine is black and got so many compliments when i was on holiday. Its really flattering. I am a size 12 and wanted a little more coverage on my hips. I felt great in it. I felt really confident walking around the pool. I thought it looked pretty.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/03/2017 22:44

and on holiday in Italy, noone batted an eyelid to my swim dress. I was the only one wearing one.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/03/2017 22:46

I got my swim dress from simply be. It had great support.

dudsville · 18/03/2017 22:46

Wear it and don't apologise for your body!

neveradullmoment99 · 18/03/2017 22:49

Mine was a magiscultp

KoolKoala07 · 18/03/2017 22:52

I'd wear a normal swim costume or tankini (although do know what you mean about rolling up) and get yourself a lovely big, colourful, light weight sarong and wrap that around your waist. Doesn't matter if it gets abit wet as being light weight will dry quickly.

Wolfiefan · 18/03/2017 22:54

Made me think more 50's starlet or Marilyn Monroe than Hattie Jacques! Grin

pimmsy · 18/03/2017 23:04

I like it and think it will look great... you just have to own it!

If not these guys do some good swimwear

I think wear what you like too. Try and work on how you feel and developing coping strategies , if there is really no way of getting out of this enforced trip .
I saw a decent looking suit at Landsend today which is a eye wateringly pricetastic, but a little different. I'd be wafting about in a kaftan myself, with my headphones in studiously ignoring folk who think they are better than me.

Dowser · 19/03/2017 12:09

I like it and I would wear it. ID need a size 16

I miss bhs, I got a few of their skirtinis before they shut up shop.

If that's what you feel comfortable in go for it. I think it's very pretty.

wibblywobblyfish · 19/03/2017 12:26

I have a swim dress and it's the preferable option to a standard swimsuit. I'm a 22 and a weird shape. I have no waist, barely fill a b cup bra and I have chunky arms and legs. I'm also pasty white to the point you can see my veins like a tube map across my arms and chest and I don't tan!!

I bought my swim dress from Evans for the purpose of helping the kids in the pool when we were in Italy and France in the summer. It is a bit like a possessed shower curtain when wet, that's true. I did notice that a lot of larger French and Italian ladies wear bikinis regardless of size but they were tanned and beautiful too and I'm neither!!

I like the TU swim dress. If that extra bit of coverage makes you feel more confident then go for it.

raeray · 19/03/2017 12:36

Hello OP
I'm a similar size to you and found some swim shorts that make me feel a million times better out and about in a cossie what ever form swim dress/tankini etc

https://www.yoursclothing.co.uk/holiday-shop

They're £17 but well worth it!
Enjoy your holiday Wine

raeray · 19/03/2017 12:37

Ps I like the dotty Sainsbury's one and would wear it with the shorts I linked to.

bionicant · 19/03/2017 12:39

i think it's quite stylist and what was wrong with hattie jacques or saying that she was a bit of a player apparently
