Breaking up with your hairdresser

Would love some feedback from people on the reasons they decided to find a new hairdresser.
I've noticed I've lost a few loyal clients recently and can't help take it to heart.
Would also like to hear from other hairdressers on how they deal with this.

OP posts:
Mouthfulofquiz · 23/02/2017 09:57

For me, it was when I had my hair dyed, and while the dye was on, she did two other clients. I don't have a problem with her doing one while the dye is on. But then the dye was washed off and I waited 45 minutes until she came back to me. I was seriously bored. So I never went back to her which is a shame because I really liked her and she did a great job apart from that...

RaeSkywalker · 23/02/2017 10:37

Inner you sound lovely.

I'm very loyal, but I left one hairdresser because he just didn't listen. I'd been having blonde highlights for years, and ultimately ended up with my hair dyed blonde all over because he kept adding more. For about 4 appointments I said I was thinking of going back to my natural colour, he just kept saying "but you've got to love blonde, you can't beat it". I wanted him to ask me what I wanted, not just go for the same colour and cut each time. Went elsewhere, had my hair dyed brown and cut shorter. It suits me so much more and I'm still with that hairdresser 8 years later!

I left a salon before that because it was at my financial maximum at the time, but the stylist constantly pressured me to buy products too. I couldn't afford it but ended up buying some because I felt awkward. Never went back.

AquaLatte · 23/02/2017 10:41

Just left mine for being constantly late. Booking it at 1 because I know I'll be done for the school run. Turn up and she's still cutting the last client. Didn't start mine until 1.45 and ended up leaving with wet hair to get the kids

LarrytheCucumber · 23/02/2017 10:47

I had a hairdresser come to the house for years. She was often an hour late, but when, twice running, she was two hours late I looked elsewhere.
I recently changed again. The hairdresser wasn't even on the premises for over half an hour after my appointment time and when he did turn up he breezed in and spent another ten minutes faffing about out the back. There was a rep waiting too and he spent the whole of my haircut time giving the rep a hard time while he hacked away at my hair. I had forgiven him a lot over the years, but this was a step too far.
New hairdresser is quiet, efficient and cheaper!

Underparmummy · 23/02/2017 10:53

AWFUL cuts mainly (two really bad ones at the same place, different stylists).

Too expensive

Too boring (just repeating same thing ad nauseam).

Teetering with my current one.

TisMeTheLadFromTheBar · 23/02/2017 10:54

I recently left my hairdresser because she charged me £140 Shock for my most recent visit (Cut & half head of highlights). I was very unhappy with it and when I said it to her, she just shrugged and said "oh right!". She spent my whole visit trying to sell me overpriced products I didn't need or want. I would expect for that kind of money, I should be extremely happy with both the experience and end result.
My friend left her hairdresser because every appointment took 6 hours (she has a pixie hair style) and she put up her prices without any warning.

Eliza22 · 23/02/2017 11:01

For me, it's service. I recently had an unhappy experience with colour. The lady who owns the salon and who's done my hair for years, was all about service when she first set up her business. It was small but very trendy premises in a quaint bit of town. She had some time off to have a baby and I went to her replacement. When she came back from mat leave, I returned to her, though you really had to book in advance, as she was doing 3 days a week. Which is fine. Then, she moved premises and got a specialist colour girl in; she presumably brought some new clients with her and the last time I went (last week) she was so busy chatting to a young woman who was having colour done that I ended up with dry, grey hair. I went back and she corrected it but still, it was horribly dry and I felt really uncomfortable, like she couldn't tell why I wasn't happy. Her "friend" was there, having her lunch 😳 and they were chatting about the friend's ex in very colourful terms. So.....I won't be going back. In the space of five years it went from a lovely little salon where nothing was too much trouble and where you got a glass of Prosecco if you were spending a small fortune on colour/cut, to a very ordinary venue where you were lucky to get a coffee. Sound petty? I don't think so. I think, with today's prices, a hair "do" is often a treat for many people. I don't want to sit there, listening to off colour remarks about some stranger shaving her ex's nethers as revenge for him playing away. Not MY idea of a treat! 😄

BattleaxeGalactica · 23/02/2017 11:02

Left mine last year because every time I went for my very basic dry cut the price had increased. Her clipping my ear with the scissors for the second time may also have influenced it. I now go to a local one I used to see years back and she's fab Smile

needapaddle · 23/02/2017 11:07

I left my hairdresser of many years because he just stopped listening to what I wanted - you can't feather/blend my fine hair because it will go stringy/crazy, has to be blunt layers, he was incredible for years prior to that but seemed to tangent off/get complacent.

Since then I had 3x hairdressers before finally finding my new one (who is amazing...so far!). I left the inbetween ones because: one was they worst butchering I'd had in years and looked embarrassing (kind of Suzi Quattro mullet!), one dyed my hair AND my face (about a centimetre around hairline - then blowdried for a night out, I looked like I was wearing a helmet/wig, had to rewash) and another completely didn't listen and cut about three inches off when I still trying to grow out the previous disaster!

NoBiggie · 23/02/2017 11:10

I left my hairdresser after they used to continually keep me waiting as they could never stick to their appointment times. Once when I said I would have to leave (45 mins later than the appointment time) they squeezed me in but made me feel so uncomfortable.

SwedishEdith · 23/02/2017 11:12

I use the same salon but am open about showing no loyalty to any stylist - and actively avoid one now. But, I may switch soon. Too expensive, no difference in price regardless of which stylist I have and am curious about what a new salon would do. Agree about not wanting a relationship with them - just a good quick haircut. I'd like the equivalent of a barber's really.

BoboChic · 23/02/2017 11:12

Most hairdressers go stale after a while on the same client. There is only so much artistic interpretation a single hairdresser can have of one person. Change is normal and healthy.

Having said that, I have been going to the same hairdresser for 8 years and he cuts my whole family's hair. He's a genius! And also works in a great salon with lots of training and international event work.

Nectarines · 23/02/2017 11:13

I changed hairdresser as the price seemed to increase every time I went. Found a more reasonable one with a more transparent pricing structure.

TheOnlyColditz · 23/02/2017 11:14

Fuck awful 'copper highlights'

She took this to mean "Yellow and orange streaks, like a ginger tabby cat"

My hair was chocolate brown, ffs. I wanted subtle copper highlights. I specifically said "Don't make me brassy blonde" - What was she thinking?

I haven't been back to any hair dresser since September. I've been buying semi box dyes and doing it myself.

theclick · 23/02/2017 11:14

Mine is great but parking became a major issue. They literally had none, and it was 30 mins out of my way. Now I go somewhere on the way home from work and parking is fine.

IDismyname · 23/02/2017 11:20

Is there a Trip Advisor version for hairdressers?

I'm looking for a new one! (West of Guildford, if you're asking...)

NoBiggie · 23/02/2017 11:31

Funnily enough I'm sat in my new hairdressers waiting for a cut- the stylist isn't even here yet and the appointment was 15 mins ago. It just makes me want to leave it's such a waste of time!

Reow · 23/02/2017 11:34

I once had one who fucked up the colour, I went in to have it corrected and the correction came out 10x worse than the original shit colour.

£200 down the drain and trashed hair. I couldnt trust him again.

Eastwestbestrest · 23/02/2017 11:42

I stopped going to one because she insisted on straightening my hair so it was completely flat every time she cut it. I asked if she could blow dry it rather than use straighteners or just use them for sleekness rather than to flatten it but she refused, saying that she needed to check the cut and could only do this if it was completely straight. I thought this was bullshit as how did people check cuts before straighteners were invented? I hate my hair flat and if I'm paying 40 quid for a cut, they should at least dry and finish it the way I ask for it.

Maverick66 · 23/02/2017 11:43

My hairdresser is my friend. Our families are friends.
I would love a change of hairdresser but feel I'm stuck.
I want to know how someone else would cut my hair.
With knowing your hairdresser on a personal level then they think they "know" you and do what they feel suits you.
She refuses to stock a selection of colours or different brands of colours.
I long for the day when someone says to me "Wow! Who cuts your hair. It's fabulous"?
It's never going to happen now and I'm resigned to "mum" hair forever 😱

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/02/2017 11:43

I've only ever changed hairdresser when they stopped being as good as previously.

mimiasovitch · 23/02/2017 11:47

I had one guy who had a super fancy new salon and did an amazing job. It was the endlessly waiting for him to actually see me and stop fannying around with reps/local press/other folk more important than actual
Client sat waiting. I left lots of others just as I fancied a change, though I have been with my current one for probably about 6 years now, if not longer, through 3 different salons. She now works out of her home, and is about to have a baby. I may not bother having my hair cut for a long while!

ArseyTussle · 23/02/2017 11:55

I've left two because they were painfully slow, unable to move the scissors and talk at the same time.

I've sometimes left a salon because I just feel like someone else's input, as I've changed my hair a lot over the years. In which case there was nothing wrong with those hairdressers at all, OP, and that could be something that is happening with you.

OdinsLoveChild · 23/02/2017 12:17

I left one because she made me late for my own wedding. 4 hours to do a french pleat/up do with a few flowers ffs Hmm.

The next one refused to cut my hair short. I had always had a lovely bob through my 20s. I grew it out due to lack of time to get a proper cut and when I eventually managed to get a day where I could get it cut shorter she refused and just did a normal trim and tidy up. I was very cross but couldn't bring myself to tell her so I haven't been back since.

Too chatty is also a big no for me. I hate smalltalk and they seem to be gold standard in wittering on about nothing.

Most of all its the pricing. I onlybudget £40 for a cut. A penny more and I will go elsewhere.

Im not tied to my hairdresser and really I just want it cut and dried how I say I want it not how they think I want it. It also takes a lot of courage for me to make an appointment(anxiety and introvert) and being told the next appointment is in 3 weeks often means I cancel.

If I could find a hairdresser who doesn't talk to me, and cuts exactly as it is in the picture I show them and can fit me in the same day then I would be prepared to pay more, a lot more in fact. Grin

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 23/02/2017 13:04

Glad to see I'm not alone. I have had a fair few as we move around a lot with DH job. I had an amazing one but we moved.

One girl spent the entire time talking about her love life and checked her phone more than my hair. I left.

Another girl, could color but not cut and style very well at all and only ever styled it how she liked not how I asked . I just didn't go back.

I left one recently after about 18 months because he messed up my color massively and when I said wasn't happy, he spent the entire time correcting it in a huge huff, he could barely speak to me or look at me. It wasn't the first time he'd made a mistake and he never just owned up to it , always said it was the light! Even with correction it was still awful . I was fed up so I left and never went back there.

New salon, she's pretty good , not too chatty which I like BUT the staff are not very welcoming, especially the owner who just glares and scowls. It's just not a very friendly feeling salon.

I don't know if it's just me but I rarely seem to get the level of service I hope for, nails , hair, eyelashes etc. some great people out there but a lot more shoddy ones. I often end up just really disappointed having spent a fortune.
