What do you wear on a hot holiday when you're the wrong size of 40 and overweight.

Because honestly I have no idea.

Last time I went on an abroad hot holiday was about 10 years ago and I was slimmer. Am now a size 18.

I don't think shorts suit me at all. Short shorts are out because I'm too fat. 3/4 type chino or linen shorts just look like something my mother would wear and make me want to cry. I think last time I went away I had denim Capri type shorts but I suspect they won't look as good on me as they did a decade ago. Do I give up on shorts? I think denim shorts and shirts and I would look like Waynetta Slob.

Pool wear/sunbathing gear I'm ok with. I've got a couple of nice swimsuits, a sarong and just ordered a nice kimono. It's more stuff for walking around the town in the day. I've got a couple of maxi dresses which will do for evenings out.

I bought a couple of pairs of full length harem type trousers last year. Not the crazy baggy ones but just cotton and full length so was thinking maybe those. No idea what to wear on top half.

When do the shops start having more summer stuff in? Going to Tenerife so it's not the height of fashion culture. But I don't want to look a mess.

"Yes cropped leggings was something I was thinking about."

I find leggings or anything that close to the skin makes me feel really hot and sweaty, as do tight vest tops. Loose fitting trousers, cropped or otherwise will be far more comfortable.

It's amazing the difference loose fitting clothes make to how hot you feel.

I agree about the cropped leggings. I have a pair from White Stuff which I took on holiday last year but never wore them as I couldn't bear the feeling of them clinging to my hot legs. Loose and cotton all the way.

I just wear slightly below the knee dresses. With anti-chafe shorts underneath. I like the jersey ones that flare - they had some nice ones at asda last summer. Also cotton dresses - empire line are comfy.

Hi OP just done a quick search, bargain white leggings here: www.fiftyplus.co.uk/shop/crop-leggings/WF782/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=5201&promo=6200&cm_mmc=Googlebase--FiftyPlus--Product%20Feeds-_-na&gclid=CMjx6IGUn9ICFY8K0wodIeIEIw&dclid=CJnK8YGUn9ICFfGu7QodeF8IPg#colour:White,size:18&CAWELAID=120121140002012244&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=17453973606&CATCI=pla-77486822076

I don't wear shorts as they just do not suit my shape. So prefer knee length skirts and dresses. They are much more versatile too as can look smarter for trips into the town/city.

Thin comfy 3/4 length leggings, glam tunic/jersey dress on top. Or plain tunic/jersey dress. Or maxi dress.
I wear this as size 12 and size 22.
Have fun!

P.S: These cheap-as-chips leggings from Amazon are comfy if not great quality:

torrentialrain. Have just ordered those leggings, thanks. Even if they do make me feel hot for £6 they're worth a go. Will find some full length cotton wide trousers as well. I think whoever said earlier that full length look classier than 3/4 trousers are right and I think that's where I've gone wrong before.

Not going until June, so plenty of time to find stuff yet. Am just excited. Have found a nice high waisted bikini on Tesco site but sold out, so I'm hoping they get more stock in.

Ditto what sgtmajormummy said. I do have some mid thigh denim shorts to throw on for any occasion but I mainly wear varying lengths of loose / floaty dresses. Fine for throwing on over a bikini to go from beach to lunch, or for wearing into town.

Ordinary extra large tights with the legs chopped off at the knee are good for wearing under dresses to stop chafing.
I got some cropped trousers in Asda last year and wore them al summer.

Will have to trial the tights trick.

The cycling short things I've got are actually long leg granny type knickers from m+s so I would wear them as knickers, rather than an extra layer. But like I say they roll up quite a bit. Comfort shorts from Evans did the same.

I would second trying the Boden chino shorts in the longer length. Also their Blackberry dresses - but they don't seem to be around (yet) this year.

My bike short length leggings don't roll up, but some models can be very tight around the thighs so worth trying on before buying actually. Since they're just cotton jersey, same as knickers, they're not warmer than knickers or anything, which I'd be wearing anyway. They go halfway down my thighs. Then again, I always wear giant knickers, people who wear fake underwear thongs would probably feel smothered and very hot.

Im the same size as the op and always go for wide leg linen trousers or palazzo pants with a short/sleeveless top.

I have a pedicure, wear nice (& comfy) sandals (or sketchers if walking far), big sunglasses, floppy hat - don't want to make any more effort than that Smile

I have loads of these:

They do them in lots of colours in summer. I have lived in them all year actually as they are good for breastfeeding and 10 months on I still look pregnant. Go down at least a size as they are big fit.

Evenings are harem trousers with a long sleeve t-shirt

That's a lovely dress wife. I also really like the stripy one that comes up for £18 if you search for 'beach dress' (your link didn't work for me)

I have that dress in turquoise. I wear it over my bikini. I am too flat chested to wear it as a dress as it is too low cut, but it is ideal to walk down to the pool in.
