Dry peeling lips - help! I've tried everything!

My lips are constantly dry and peeling and no matter what lip balm I use it doesn't make a difference. I've tried them all - Chapstick, Blistex, Carmex, Nivea, Vaseline Intensive Care, Body Shop, Nuxe, Lanolips - nothing works. I exfoliate them and I look for balms that have things like moisturising oils or cocoa butter or Shea butter in them and avoid irritating ingredients but it makes no difference. My diet is fairly good and I drink at least a litre of water every day too.

Can anyone suggest a miracle product?

I suffer with the same, I find good old fanshioned Vaseline works, I slather it on before bed. Also trying to avoid licking your lips helps and if you wear lipstick, the long lasting ones are often very drying so try to go for moisturising ones.

I've tried Lansinoh and plan Vaseline as well as Vaseline with cocoa butter. The hemp balm is the only body shop one I've not yet tried.

Have you had a blood test lately? You could be short vitamins really. Loads of people are very short on vitamin d, and I think low b can cause dry lips. I am not an expert but I would check for this as it could be more than skin deep.

Lucas Paw Paw or Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream are good - though I think they may well be mainly vasoline !

MistressofIndecision · 03/02/2017 21:59

4th one to recommend Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream, it us the only thing that worked on my cracked, very dry lips and I tried everything else

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 03/02/2017 21:59

Which Blistex have you tried? The medicated one in the white tube was the only one that worked for me.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 03/02/2017 22:00

Nothing, use absolutely nothing, the driest my lips have ever been is when I put lipsol and the likes on. You'll have to go cold turkey for a few days but then the improvement will start, it will get worse before it gets better. Moisturise your face as per usual.

bingohandjob · 03/02/2017 22:00

I've discovered that I'm very sensitive to certain toothpastes and they bugger up my lips and skin around my mouth. Try swapping for another brand?

MrsDc7 · 03/02/2017 22:02

Clarins honey lip oil works for me

3luckystars · 03/02/2017 22:02

Also, if I clean my face with a wipe, my lips peel off. So don't use baby wipes and take more vitamins.

Butterymuffin · 03/02/2017 22:04

Another one saying you need the Blistex relief cream in the white metal tube. Don't bother with any other version of the product, they're all useless.

QueenoftheAndals · 03/02/2017 22:08

I tried Blistex a while ago but all their products contain camphor, which is a known irritant. I tend to avoid anything too fragranced too, for the same reasons.

5th vote for Elizabeth Arden 8 hour lip balm - my lips were so dry they would crack and bleed... made me so self-conscious! EA fixed it in a few days (I use the one in the lipstick packaging not the pot)

LesAnya · 03/02/2017 22:17

I have this too and have chalked it up to a new toothpaste. Am currently using this after speaking to a pharmacist and it seems to be doing the trick!

Cakescakescakes · 04/02/2017 00:17

Can be a sign of a B vitamin deficiency. Maybe try a supplement for a while?

ChishandFips33 · 04/02/2017 00:36

Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream here too - has a like or hate it smell but is a miracle in a tube

Calms the nose down too after lots of wiping/blowing!

Op do your lips constantly peel in a cycle? If so you may have cheilitis

Like others have suggested I think it's best to get a blood test to check for any deficiencies. Also omega 3 fish oil capsules may help, and simply improving your diet overall

SleepFreeZone · 04/02/2017 00:54

Do you wear lipstick? I found my kid were peering a lot as I was allergic to certain lipsticks? I never worked out what ingredient was doing it but I know the Tesco own range - Barbara Daly? Was one brand that did it

SleepFreeZone · 04/02/2017 00:54

*lips were peeling a lot

Deux · 04/02/2017 00:55

You've had lots of great suggestions.

But do try changing your toothpaste. Some of the active ingredients can cause irritation and peeling of skin e.g. Triclosan and some of the whitening actives. Though the peeling is usually just on the inner membranes.

Your toothpaste may have been reformulated. Try a simple toothpaste without added extras so a plain Colgate (not Complete) or Aquafresh or own label.

I react really badly to some and I used to work in the toothpaste production industry.

witwootoodleoo · 04/02/2017 01:10

I find cold pressed flaxseed oil capsules really help me

Giraffeseyelashes · 04/02/2017 01:18

I would say that pure lanolin for nipples (Lansinoh) is much better than lanolips which is much more "watery" and only slightly better than Vaseline.

MrsDc7 · 04/02/2017 06:21

I've suffered terribly with my lips for years. It never once occurred to me that it might be the toothpaste!

bertdynamite · 04/02/2017 06:42

I think I'm the 7th recommendation for Elizabeth Arden - in the tube. If I've got really sore lips or nose from a cold then I slather it on at bed time and in the morning it's all better.

Ulysses · 04/02/2017 06:47

The 8 hour cream didn't work for me when I had a bad bout. The only thing to shift it was medicated Blistex. DD now has same problem so I am away to buy some.
