Beauty problems we didn't have in the 80's

*Pores- no one fussed about open pores,in fact the only place you read about them was in a science paper at school.

*Cellulite- it was just 'dimply legs' if you were a bit fat, then suddenly magazines made it a 'thing!'

  • The right colour foundation- there were only about 3 shades back then and no one made a fuss if you had the wrong one as everyone didGrin

  • No one cared about the damage Sun In and lemon juice did to your hairShock

  • No one waxed their eye brows,we all went at them like crazy with a pair of tweezers!

  • 99% of people had pubes!

I was contemplating this around Tesco earlierGrin

Yes,you had to hang your jacket up to get rid of the smoke after a night out. It was quite acceptable to say "sorry I stink,I was out last night" the response was not "urghhhhh!" but "where did you go?"Grin

Designer vaginas!!!!

You got what you were given and it didn't matter what you were like as it was all covered with hair so didn't show!

Oh yes I loved Dewberry! I was a youngish teen in the late eighties. Most of my clothes came from Chelsea Girl and Clockhouse at C&A. I remember there being just one slightly over weight child in my primary school and maybe a handful in my secondary school.

OCSockOrphanage · 17/01/2017 13:27

My first bikini wax was in 1983, in NYC!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/01/2017 13:29

You see,you and to go to New York to get one!

I think the reason fake tan wasn't a "thing" was because it was actually acceptable to go out wearing tights with sandals (at least I remember my auntie doing that).

I get really annoyed that I can get a proper look at the Mac lipsticks at my nearest store because it's always swamped with teenagers. How can they afford it? The best I got was the Rimmel stand in the local chemist, of course heather simmer was the lipstick of choice. Do they still make that?

Tessticklesyourfancy · 17/01/2017 14:00

Twilight Teaser form Boots 17 was the favourite lipstick for us, had a slight blue tinge with the pink, only been dead a hour look Shock
Yes to the Bodyshop White musk!
Ponds cold cream
Anne French cleanser
Liocoat stuff that was painted over the top of lipstick. Stung like buggery and needed scrubbing with a Brillo pad to shift it Grin

TheLesserWeevil · 17/01/2017 14:03

Surely the early 90s had even fewer beauty problems than the 80s? No hair spray or perms, bugger all make up, comfortable DMs or trainers... it was all low to no maintenance. Then the Spice Girls came along with their ridiculous shoes and make up and ruined it all. Sigh.

Gingernaut · 17/01/2017 14:06

Hair crimpers. Seriously, two plates that clamped together and instead of being flat (you know, like hair straighteners), had corrugations in them that left your hair 'big' and 'fluffy'.

Rimmel' Heather Shimmer, Constance Carroll with the strange pearlised brown plastic packaging, colour changing lipsticks that looked green, yellow, clear or light pink and changed to something else when you put it on. And it was a cow to take off.

People seriously copying the make up looks of Boy George, Toyah Wilcox and Adam Ant and nobody turned a hair when they passed by.

Donkey jackets, big long mannish coats and broad brimmed hats.

Aran everything. Leggings/footless tights, jumpers, cardigans, scarves and skirts.

Body Shop Japanese washing grains, Dewberry scent, Samarkhand scent (loved that one. Where did that go?), there was a washing chalk as well for greasy, spot prone skin, Mudd face masks, Pond's face cream, Clearasil that stripped paint and St. Ive's apricot scrub advertised with the American adverts and wondering what the Hell 'ahpricot' was.

Tessticklesyourfancy · 17/01/2017 14:13

Everyone had Afro combs too and banana clips for the days when you couldn't be that bothered to do your hair too.

MrsMarigold · 17/01/2017 14:15

I remember my mother having bikini waxes in the 80s so there was no fuzz round the edges, she also worried about "orange peel", and open pores.

Floisme · 17/01/2017 14:20

'Designer jeans!' We said, 'do they really think we're that stupid?'

Gingernaut · 17/01/2017 14:24

MissBeehiving · 17/01/2017 16:35

I can categorically state that we were strangers to waxing in Norfolk until at least 1991. 😄

Mamia15 · 17/01/2017 17:04

Loving this thread - brought back memories of my teenage years Grin

Big hair, perms, huge plastic tacky jewellery, bright colours, jumpers tucked inside mum jeans, shimmery cheap make up etc - so much fun!

Mamia15 · 17/01/2017 17:06

And shaving - as well as trying immac, we used those razors that you had to unscrew to change the disposable blades and then we discovered BIC disposable razors that only had one blade....

Tessticklesyourfancy · 17/01/2017 18:05

Does anyone remember those things that were like sandpaper for your legs? Not so much sure about hair removal, more like skin removal 😂

herecomesthsun · 17/01/2017 18:13

Pink dungarees from Miss Selfridge (to wear to Greenham common) and second hand Chanel and Givenchy (for fun) before vintage was A Thing.

awesomeness · 17/01/2017 18:36

I missed the 80s sort of (born 85) i have an older sister tho who lived the 80s (74 birth) but i still remember the taste of insette hair spray

Body shops dewberry too.......none of this £80+ bottles.....just good old dewberry

Floisme · 17/01/2017 19:42

before vintage was A Thing
Yeah that was the best thing about shopping in the 80s - and the 70s too. 'Vintage' was just second hand. Hardly anyone knew about it.

bluebellsparklypants · 18/01/2017 11:50

Op did you get your shopping done?!

And what made you think of "99% of people had pubes" in Tesco's?!

I think all the permed hair and heavy make made everyone look older in the 80's but miss that innocents of it all

bluebellsparklypants · 18/01/2017 11:52

Loved the jumpers that changed colour can't remember what they where called ?
