Do you have any 'Style Rules'?

These days I generally believe that you should wear what the hell you like but I can clearly remember thinks from my youth that were an absolute no no.

My mum was horrified when I went out in a coat with my skirt hanging down a couple of inches from the bottom. (This was the 80's).

I would never have worn red and green together, whereas now I have a pair of bottle green trousers that I like with a dark red jumper and hope that I don't look too much like an extra from Elf.

Do you have any particular 'rules' that you stick to?

When younger and much thinner very little in the way of rules outside of workplace, aside from avoiding yellow and green, which make me look ill.

No: still no yellow or green, also no brown or beige, no sleeveless tops or shorts except on a beach or in my own garden.

Purple is the best, practically everything I am wearing these days is purple!

KeyserSophie · 10/01/2017 12:57

I'm aiming for a nose stud this year. smile. Even though I'm 57

Ooh, I want one too. I also saw someone with their tragus pierced and a lovely delicate chain from that to their main earring. I thought "ooh I might get that done" and then thought "better not.. My mum will go mad" I'm 45!!!!!

KatharinaRosalie · 10/01/2017 13:05

I know 'having your colours done' is not really fashionable and no you do not necessarily need to go and have ladies waving coloured fabrics around you. But wearing the colours that suit you around your face makes a big difference. And those might not necessarily be the colours you like.
I love bright, clear colours like bright turquoise, red, hot pink - but they totally drain me. My friend on the other hand looks amazing in them, and totally pale and tired in pastels. It really works. You can of course still wear the other colours, just as bottoms.

MuseumOfCurry · 10/01/2017 13:12

I think the children of the 80s amongst us probably remember our mothers trying to work out if they were winter, spring, summer or autumn.

Ohh... museum

They've updated it. I'm apparently a cool summer. (Nods pretentiously)

No linen I don't looked casually crumpled I look wrinkled and messy
No VPL. Ever.
Rarely black-only when lightly tanned
Never beige or the very pale blues and greens some older women wear (this is a daughter mandate)
No ugly shoes (also daughter mandate I am allowed flats but they have to be stylish/pretty)

MusicToMyEars800 · 10/01/2017 16:55

not too much cleavage on show, I have massive jugs and I don't think it looks good to have them hanging out!
no turtle neck tops/jumpers, again big boos and it doesn't suit them
no tights with open toe shoes ( though this is more of a look that makes me cringe )
no bold print or animal print on leggings/jeans etc
nothing baggy, I am not slim so baggy=frumpy
have a properly fitting bra, I've seen the boob hangover on others, it is not a good look
nothing that is in fashion or what everyone seems to be wearing, I don't want to look like a sheep in a herd
complimentary accessories, not tacky weird shit eg: big upside down fake gold earrings
no knee high boots, they do no favours for my midget size

FrameyMcFrame · 10/01/2017 17:05

floaty things can be toughened up with a belt...

I don't wear jewelry but bags, belts and good shoes, good coats pull things together for me.

whyohwhy000 · 10/01/2017 17:33

No black or white next to my face.

When DS had his passport photo done, he was wearing a white shirt, so in black and white it looks as if his head is floating.

1horatio · 10/01/2017 17:59

My most important rule is:
-clothes are supposed to fit. Not because they contain some sort of stretch but because the cut fits my body type.
If they don't I'll bring them to the tailor.

What else?
Only inherited fur
No animal prints
Either cleavage or back or legs
High waisted makes anything better
A blow dry makes anything better
Shoes should be comfortable

MuseumOfCurry · 10/01/2017 18:07

no knee high boots, they do no favours for my midget size

With apologies to their devotees - I am quietly appalled by knee-high boots.

cooltalkineverlivin · 10/01/2017 18:09

No leggings, they look owful on anyone IME
No cleavage or bum crack by the same token
No all black, I look like a crow
No shoes I couldn't walk a mile in
Nothing that jangles
Either necklace or earrings, never both - I'm not a christmas tree
Nothing which has material that reminds me of something else, e.g. a blanket or curtains
Never leather, it can't be washed (yuk)
Always freshly shampoo'd dry hair, fresh breath, scent sometimes

MuseumOfCurry · 10/01/2017 18:20

Never leather, it can't be washed (yuk)

It can!

VerbenaGirl · 10/01/2017 18:20

Never wear white, as I get it grubby within seconds. I think it looks fab on others though.
Avoid appliqué poodles (actually, probably most dogs).

Floisme · 10/01/2017 18:21

Thanks absolutely I'll check them out. I agree with you - only bags that leave both hands free for me from now on.

Fadingmemory · 10/01/2017 18:29

Sportswear including trainers for sport not every day wear. Sleeveless tops likewise for sport only. A line or straight knee length or full length skirts or dresses are more flattering than midi length or flaring out. No bare legs unless under trousers or full length skirts. No low denier tights or stockings (lumpy veins). Scoop neck or v neck suits best. Am short and a more fitted line, rather than flowing, is best. Cropped trousers make short legs look shorter. Nothing fussy or frilly. Plain colours or small fabric designs - large patterns make me look dumpy 😟.

specialsubject · 10/01/2017 18:49

no leaving the house in trackies.
wear a bra when it will be obvious if I'm not - one bonus about winter, no need!
never a handbag. Wallet, phone and keys in pocket.
no florals, light pinks or sparkles. Am not 12.

trainers for comfort. Sleeveless tops in summer. No visible underwear. No holes in things.

Iamblossom · 10/01/2017 20:21

I wouldn't wear skinny jeans unless I had a top that was long enough to cover a camel toe

No upper arms on show unless in bikini or a vest top on holiday as per pp

I hate the back fat bulge over a bra strap so I would not wear something that showed that

heels if trousers drag on floor in flats

Never denim on denim

Never black with navy

Never long boots with a below the knee dress, makes them look like wellies

I always try to match my underwear

I always have a manicure and pedicure

Iamblossom · 10/01/2017 20:25

Totally agree that waterfall cardigans are a complete waste of money and would never wear a top that came lower than my coat

NameChanger22 · 10/01/2017 20:25

No primary colours.

No orange.

No wraparound dresses.

No stilettos.

Nothing uncomfortable.
Nothing too tight.
Nothing too boring.

MuseumOfCurry · 10/01/2017 21:03

Orange is quite beautiful with navy IMO.

Orange cashmere jumper, navy trousers or (preferably) jeans, gold or beige flats. Very chic.

MollyHuaCha · 10/01/2017 21:09

Careful when buying clothes online. The model is 5'10", size 6 and the photo has been carefully posed and then airbrushed.

sodabreadjam · 10/01/2017 22:37

Rules from my youth:

No skirts hanging below coats
No tops hanging below cardigans or jumpers
No long hair hanging down on fur collar
No black and navy together
No red and green together

Current rules (I am early sixties)

Nothing too tight, nothing too loose - both make me look fat
Not much cleavage and no midriff on show
No slogans and rarely anything with a logo
Rarely wear big patterns - mostly self-coloured, small pattern or fine stripe/check
No high heels - can't walk in them
Toes rarely on display - except on holiday in hot country
Have never liked asymmetrical clothes
Don't like cowl necks on me
No pussy cats bows ever
No frills, very little lace
None of the bare-shoulder tops and dresses currently fashionable

FSVC · 10/01/2017 22:41

Wear a slip under skirts! Remember that photo of Lady Diana.

CakeNinja · 10/01/2017 22:48

I'm no style guru. I wear what I like and don't bother with setting myself rules. I dress for myself and if I wanted to wear stripes with spots, I would.
Although I will never own or wear a fleece, and the same goes for crocs!
Other than those, I'd be pretty open to wearing most things Grin
