I don't mind them, although my DS's don't really have any apart from PJ's - I only like well made stuff though, I hate cheap market copies of things.

Flamesparrow · 19/02/2007 11:57

"If you acn't wear them when you are 5 when can you? Eh? Eh?!!!!"

To be fair though - I don't often stick the DC in them... DD has a few Minnie Mouse bits, and a spiderman t-shirt, and DS has nothing (yet... i feel sure DD will get him into spiderman soon!)

madmarchhare · 19/02/2007 11:57

Oh no & lol @ knitting machine jumpers . I remember my mum making me wear ones that my gran had done.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 11:57

I had a lovely reversible bat wing sweater.. it had a leopard print on one side and was black with a shiny gold pattern on the other. I bet you're all delerious with jelaousy now aren't you...

I was 14 I believe. I also seem to remember it being trendy although I was probably wrong. Bit of a I was.. and a low budget one at that.

yaddayah · 19/02/2007 11:57

Perhaps its where they wear them thats the problem.. DD (age 2)wears her character stuff with jeans and trainers to nursery

DS (age 5) is at school but wears it after school when playing

I don't dress them in at at "formal" occasions .. at weddings/proper gatherings they're very smart

I actually like the contrast as it really looks like they've made the effort for special stuff

Wish my mum had had a knitting machine when I was younger

CountessDracula · 19/02/2007 11:58

DD has Peppa Pig pyjamas!

Shiney - I was completely baffled by the evils of softner thread too

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 12:04

I'll let DS have it if he wants it, but I do find it naff so I wouldn't encourage it. I have a friend who has a DS called Thomas, and he seems to be actively encouraged to wear and play with all things Thomas (TM) - now that I find a bit weird.

OTOH I grew up wearing a lot of shocking items handmade by my (certifiable) dad, so I'm maybe a bit warped...

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 12:08

Me too. A private OT came and spent 4 hours here.. changed all the plans and specs.. the housing assoc. are now alternately freaking and fainting over the cost. But she met and experienced DS.. (had 4 Rich Tea fingers shoved down her throat by him no less! )..so she is not compromising an awful lot.. she is currently trying to get him underfloor heating and roof windows for his new room... ! (We love her even if she is in cloud cuckoo land! )

Sorry for thead crash.

My main objection to character clothing is the price. My children have worn / do wear character clothing, but it is rarely anything I have bought new myself. I have to say, it is not my preference to dress them in that sort of thing, but I don't go so far as to not use them if they are given to them. There are worse things IMO. I hate skulls on little boys, and tarty/princessy slogans on little girls (you know the sort of thing I mean: "If I don't get what I want, I scream!")

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 12:12

No. Her name is Tracey and she's very English.. she also works for social services but the HA are paying her privately for this (and 34 other cases she's working on.. none as complex as ours naturally !. Hence the 4 hours I guess. Initial euphoria has worn off now.. still thrilled that it's happening but frustrated and that they haven't started yet. DS has gone from bad to worse.

LIZS · 19/02/2007 12:14

our dc's have character pyjamas, socks and underwear, ds also has an Incredibles sweatshirt now I think about it but think that is pretty much all. Surely it is no worse than logoed stuff and actually less pseudo-adult ? They're kids fgs !

Oh bless DD Email me will you Fio.. I keep wanting to ask how you are and you're not in our temp. email address book. And we're totally hogging this thread. Thing is I don't have time to email.. just to post on threads.. genuinely.. (don't know how that figures but it does!! hmm).. so don't hold your breath..

chopchopbusybusy · 19/02/2007 12:19

I've never even given it a thought! Yes, they must have done. TBH I'd rather see children in a character Tshirt than one emblazoned by a brand name.

Nothing at all - unless the character in question happens to be Bratz (aka "My little hooker".)

Overrun · 19/02/2007 12:26

Theres nowt wrong with it in my book. My ds1 loves Thomas, and I find it handy to motivate him to put his pants or top on, if they are emblazoned with his favourite characters.
The dts also have character stuff, and I find this useful, because it helps me demarcate whose clothes are whose. It makes them feel special if they are wearing a top with their favourite character on.

filthymindedvixen · 19/02/2007 12:26

i don't like like being ripped off (being forced to pay £15 over the odds cos it's got fecking Thomas gurning on the front.) but if we are given stuff which they like, why not? As others have said, better than crappy slogans or pre-pubescant hooker wear. Besides, they soon decide it's not 'cool' for themselves...
Ach there are some miserable sods on here eh?

I was almost tempted myself by a Spongebob t-shirt the other day with 'Nice buns at the Krusty Krab'. Luckily I did see sense before the checkout but still....
