DD wants her hair like this - do you think it would ever look ok?

I'm completely against the idea. She's 14 though, so can obviously decide for herself, but I'm just thinking of ways to make it look good Blush she is keen on wearing a bandana with it?

It's the girl from stranger things. She's definitely got the style for it, I think. She's very feminine, but in a boho way? Do you think some people can pull a hairstyle like this off?

School might have something to say - can't tell if it's shaved ?

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 10/12/2016 19:43

yes, why not?
Why are you worrying about what looks good? you're not shaving your hair are you? isn't it up to her what she thinks looks good?

MollieF · 10/12/2016 19:43

She is allowed anything above a grade 2

MollieF · 10/12/2016 19:44

No I know, I'm just wondering if some people can pull that style off, that's all. I won't get in her way if she wants it done, not at all

sooperdooper · 10/12/2016 19:45

She's 14, leave her to it, it's only fair it'll grow back if she doesn't like it

absolutelynotfabulous · 10/12/2016 19:45

I like it. If she's allowed it in school, I'd let her. It'll grow. It's only hair.

Starface · 10/12/2016 19:47

I did this over the summer hols when I was 16. I already had a pixie cut, and it grew back into one after the hols again. Not sure it was the best look, in retrospect - a chubby sinead O'Connor springs to mind. But I was a teen, hair grows back. Depends a bit on school attitude if she does it now (you want to avoid any exclusions obvs) and she'll need a hat.

What is adolescence for except pushing boundaries to their limits?

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 10/12/2016 19:47

some people certainly can pull that style off.
Skin from Skunk Anansie
Sinead O'Connor is famously shaven headed
Jessie Jay was for a while wasn't she?
Charlize Theron did it and look stunning,
Sigourney Weaver did it in aliens and looked amazing.
Theres more but I forget now.

SheldonsSpot · 10/12/2016 19:48

Honestly - I think there are very very few people that can pull that style off.

That said, it's her hair, and if school are ok with it and she's determined to try it, then why not?

It's only hair, it'll grow back.

I'd be making it very clear that I do not want to hear any moaning about it though if she doesn't like it/while it's growing back.

Bluntness100 · 10/12/2016 19:48

Ach, not sure why folks getting on the ops back, if my daughter wanted to shave her head and wear a bandana I'd have had a moments pause and a little(quite serious) conversation with her too.

Op, yes, I think if you have the face for it, it would work, but clearly it's not an easy look to pull off. The good news is it will grow back again.

MollieF · 10/12/2016 19:50

By bandana I mean those things that people stick in babies Grin she wears those now but can't see it look amazing with a shaven head. She is stylish though and do think she can pull it off but I'm just a bit ConfusedConfused oh she wants to donate her hair to the princess foundation

My 14 year old DD shaves her head to a Grade 2. She looks fab, the cow! Wish I had her bone structure! Perfect age to experiment with hairstyles, I never had the courage to do it myself. And it'll grow back, eventually (DD is experiencing the fluffy duckling look at the moment).

Bluntness100 · 10/12/2016 19:51

Donating is a lovely thing to do. Kudos to her.

I'm not sure what things they stick in babies? 🙄

MollieF · 10/12/2016 19:52

Stick on babies sorry, those fabric headbands

OP posts:
ineedamoreadultieradult · 10/12/2016 19:57

I think it would look odd with the headband. You could maybe suggest a longer pixie cut as stepping stone towards this look if you think she might regret it/change her mind.

dailymaillazyjournos · 10/12/2016 20:01

What's the worst that can happen? If she doesn't like it it will grow. If school are ok about it, then imo she should go for it. If her hair has any length to it now, seriously consider donating it if she's happy with doing it. The Princess Trust will really appreciate it.

Gingernaut · 10/12/2016 20:01

I have thick red hair.

When I was young and stupid a teenager, I had my hair cut a finger's width long.

Complete strangers would stroke my hair as we passed each other in the street.

Cunts. Angry

phoolani · 10/12/2016 20:03

Confused why she wouldn't be 'allowed' it in school? Don't boys have shaved heads all the time? They do round here.

MoreGilmoreGirls · 10/12/2016 20:04

I had my hair like that when I was a teenager, lots of people complimented me. I was tiny and thin... sigh

I hope she goes for it and loves it, if not it will grow

MrsMeeseeks · 10/12/2016 20:15

If there's one thing that 14 year olds should have power over it's their hair.

lasttimeround · 10/12/2016 22:43

You say she has style so then she'll make it look good. Can be great and gets you to accept and work with your face rather than spend u our teens hiding under hair.
I've had that kind of cut a lot. Too old for it now although may well go back to it when I'm wizened 😊
Lovely that she's donating her hair.

InTheKitchenAtParties · 10/12/2016 23:35

How long is her hair now Mollie?
She could potentially regret it. Bitterly. I say this as a person who has made several bad hair choices in my life.

mudandmayhem01 · 10/12/2016 23:41

I had mine like in my early 20s loved it, got a lot of women chatting me up ( I'm straight but it was flattering) I did find I had to wear make up every day or I looked a bit like a 12 year boy rather than a woman.

choppolata · 10/12/2016 23:52

I had a flat top at 13/14 in the 80s, it was great to look different to all the frizz and Sun-In. These days I have arse length hair, it's still great to look different. Grin

TrionicLettuce · 11/12/2016 00:10

She should definitely go for it if she fancies it. The worst that will happen is she hates it and it'll grow back surprisingly quickly if she does.

I once went from bum length (and incredibly thick) hair to an all over grade 1 in one go. It was amazing, so liberating getting rid of all that hair at once and I absolutely loved it.

Since then I've alternated between letting it grow out for a while and shaving it all off. I'm currently enjoying the best of both worlds with a fairly extensive sidecut Grin
