Disappointed after wedding dress shopping

Anyone else had this? I went shopping for the first time yesterday. I'm 5"3, very large bust but size 10 everywhere else and everything but a very basic dress looked horrendous on me. I imagined myself in lace and with beading, and the only style of dress that suited seemed so 'not me'. I'm going to a different dress shop today with high hopes still but yesterday I felt like crying after my appointment. Has anyone had to settle for a dress that they didn't think suited their personality? Is it more important to like the dress or have it be flattering? The dress made me look pretty, I have a classic look about me but we are having a very relaxed wedding and I had a more relaxed style in mind but it all makes me look fat! I'm just looking for reassurance I suppose that I'm not doomed.

That's a lot like mine, I felt wonderful in it.

Lovely dress, good luck with the rest of your planning.

It's beautiful!

That's gorgeous. I found some shops had really awful stock, I wanted something soft and flowing and all they had were stiff heavy satins and shaped bodices that did nothing for me. I went to four shops and found that the last one clearly had my sort of aesthetic as there were loads in there I liked - the others had very little despite being packed with huge heavy monstrosities.

I hope you do end up finding the right dress, I'm sure you will. I think maybe go to a few other places and try on some more, maybe explain what you are looking for, and see what they can suggest. Hopefully they will have the perfect dress for you. And as others have said, when you find 'the one' you really will just know.

I was lucky, I knew from long ago (before I was even old enough to get married) what type of dress and wedding day I wanted.
I went to a local small bridal boutique, with some pictures of what I wanted printed from their website.
I told them that I wanted a pure white big ballgown with sweetheart neckline and no sleeves or straps, with a decent length train. And I didn't want a corset back even though I would be 4 months pregnant on my wedding day. And on top of that, my wedding was in 2 months time. I got exactly what I wanted though.
I only tried on 2 dresses and the second one was 'the one' for me. The funny thing was, the one I ended up buying id looked at online and wasn't keen. But I needed to get one then because of the time, and it was the only white ballgown they had in. So I agreed to try it, then as soon as I put it on with the veil I just knew.
So based on that, don't ever judge a dress by a picture. As I ended up loving and wearing the exact dress I didn't like in the picture.
Good luck.

That's a lovely dress.

I tried on some dresses which were supremely flattering but just didn't feel like me. They were corset backed and strapless pleated satin numbers and they did look great on me but it was just so far removed from what I'd usually wear that it didn't feel right.

In the end I wore a dress which was much less formal and yes, less flattering and show stopping but I was much more comfortable in it. it was also 5% of the cost of others I tried on
