Disappointed after wedding dress shopping

Anyone else had this? I went shopping for the first time yesterday. I'm 5"3, very large bust but size 10 everywhere else and everything but a very basic dress looked horrendous on me. I imagined myself in lace and with beading, and the only style of dress that suited seemed so 'not me'. I'm going to a different dress shop today with high hopes still but yesterday I felt like crying after my appointment. Has anyone had to settle for a dress that they didn't think suited their personality? Is it more important to like the dress or have it be flattering? The dress made me look pretty, I have a classic look about me but we are having a very relaxed wedding and I had a more relaxed style in mind but it all makes me look fat! I'm just looking for reassurance I suppose that I'm not doomed.

Did she pin you in properly? Obviously if you were wearing a bigger size to fit your boobs it's going to look bigger all over but she should have pinned you in to reflect what it'll look like when it's altered.

RaisingSteam · 10/12/2016 11:19

I think you will find your middle ground! Try on lots and photograph them all, I find it's much easier to be objective about a photo half a day later.
If you are petite a lot of detail/fabric can be overhelming so maybe a simple cut but with quirky/vintage details will be where you end up.

BreatheDeep · 10/12/2016 11:30

I wanted to cry after my first appointment too. None of the dress styles I originally wanted suited me and made me look fat and frumpy. The second place I went was really good and listened to what I wanted and why they didn't suit me. She got me to try one I would have never considered and it was perfect!

Honestly after the first shop I thought I wouldn't find anything I liked which suited me.

FrankAndBeans · 10/12/2016 11:36

Celtic No, she put me in a smaller than my bust size so half of them wouldn't even do up!

Try Pronovias- sounds like your style and generous of boob. I'm a 12 with big boobs and found that a good seamstress was key to getting an amazing fit. Here's my pic...

Also by big bust I am talking a 28KK on a size 10 figure so I am completely lopsided. I'd love to have waited until after I'd quit breastfeeding and gone back to my usual G but I don't want to quit for such a vanity focused reason. Thanks for all your advice, I am reading it all, just getting ready for my appointment at the same time. If I don't get time to reply anymore beforehand I will update after the appointment. Fenella Those look beautiful! I am working on about a 1,500 pound price limit though and I think JP is generally more than that. I could be wrong though.

What about a 50's style swing dress? There are some lovely brodalnones around

Gizlotsmum · 10/12/2016 11:40

Bridal ones even

mateysmum · 10/12/2016 11:40

It's a looong time since I got married, but I am 5' 1" and a big bust too. I found that dresses with a waist below the natural waist really drew the eye away from the boobs and suited a slim figure.
Having watched far too many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, I second trying on lots of different silhouettes not just what you have in your head as the one for you. Find a store where the assistants really know their stuff and let them help you.

Ohitdo · 10/12/2016 11:42

Yes I was going to recommend say yes to the dress as proof that women don't end up with what they think they want!

Gizlotsmum · 10/12/2016 11:42

Any of these?

You can get JPs in sample sales or lots of similar styles around - I got married in a similar dress that was about £1800 including the alterations. Worth trying on those sorts of shapes as I am a similar body shape to you - 30GG and a size 8-10.

BakeOffBiscuits · 10/12/2016 11:45

Dd has just got her dress but it was a long process to get there!

My advice would be to go and try on as many dresses as possible, noting which aspects you like /don't like.
If you don't find "the one" then start looking on the internet. Look at designers which you have tried and liked and pick out dresses that you think will suit you and that you love. Then find out where those specific styles are stocked and go and try them on.
There are hundreds and hundreds of dresses out there, it makes sense to look on the internet, but only after you've tried lots on and know what you like and what suits you.

GinIsIn · 10/12/2016 11:49

Just checked with my friend where her dress was from (she's a 30k) and she said it was a monsoon wedding dress!! She looked amazing and hers was fitted lace - might be worth a look?

coxsorangepippin · 10/12/2016 13:01

You could think also about how accessories etc can create the look you feel reflects you. I had a very structured style like your first photo, because a boho dress would not have looked right with my DH's full Scottish regalia! But once I added bright colourful shoes, home made flowers and a birdcage veil I felt totally like 'me'.

SuperPug · 10/12/2016 13:06

Tiger , your dress is lovely.
OP, I am fairly similar to you. The fishtail dresses looked awful on me and be prepared to go up two dress sizes to accommodate your bust. Other measurements could be taken in.
I went with Lou Lou Bridal, House of Mooshki are also great.

FrankAndBeans · 10/12/2016 16:10

I think I have found it! Thank you all for your help and advice, I was in completely the wrong shop. I went to one today and found what I think is the one. It's beautiful, exactly what I wanted and I think it is flattering and so 'me'.

Also it's not in that ivory but has a sand underlay that gives it a lovely hint to it.

That's a beautiful dress Smile. Glad you put yesterday behind you and didn't settle for something that wasn't quite right.

Now you can look forward to wearing it! Flowers

bunnybleu · 10/12/2016 16:40

I think when you find the right dress you will know. But as you've found out, it might not be what you thought it was going to be!
When we got married I had in my head an off the shoulder, long sleeved empire line dress......what I got was the first dress I put on, short sleeved bodice with separate straight skirt and detachable train, it was absolutely perfect but NOTHING like what I'd imagined I'd wear. I still tried other dresses on but I went with the first one.
So try not to be disheartened, just try different things on and you will find something you love.

GinIsIn · 10/12/2016 16:46

It's BEAUTIFUL!!

BakeOffBiscuits · 10/12/2016 17:03
