Opinions please - what do you think of this dress for me to wear to my mother's wedding

Its this dress

I don't want to look a ponce. I'm not a bridesmaid or anything but I do want to look my best.

I'm on a diet, have lost over a stone so far and if I stay on track should be easily a size 14 by the time of the wedding. I have good legs, nice arms & shoulders but large norks (even when slimmer). Hair v similar to models (but more of abirds nest, obv)

I won't consider it if I don't get to size 14.

I like the shoes, too but the bag is a bit

Just a thought MamaG, how would your Mum feel about you wearing that dress... it being strapless, and you having one hell of a cleavage (I imagine!). Is she likely to get all grumpy because you're looking better than her?

I bought a lovely dress for my Mum's wedding (20+ years ago now) which had very thin straps and showed off my figure (it was quite good in those days). Mum made me go out and buy a jacket to go over the top, and as it wasn't part of a set, it looked awful, but she was pleased!

AnneJones · 16/02/2007 13:04

I really liked the original dress - I often wear "eveningy" dresses to weddings and have never felt odd or out of place. If it looks nice on you, you'll feel great and emanate that radience and confidence that will carry it off.

With regards to the weight loss - strapless dresses will work at any size if you have lovely shapely shoulders and great posture, IMHO.

oh bugger now I'm in a quandry! I thought I'd cover up in the day with first dress and then just have dress for night. I do like the green monsoon one too though.

Mum will just have to cope with my enormous norks, there is no hiding these babies

PS you won't look "like a bridesmaid" in such a subtle colour esp if it doesn't "match" any other wedding details.

And with regard to your Mum being jealous/concerned - why not ask her? Good excuse for a girly shopping & bonding trip?

MamaG · 16/02/2007 13:08

hmm yeah, she might even buy it for me

go and try them both on.

am still not convinced on empirey shape of first one though - the way it'll hang from large norks may not flatter even a slim tummy.

I like the op dress and the green one from Monsoon.

I think the original dress would be fine. I like that style for weddings.

I don't think that you need to be a 12 or smaller to have bare arms either

NadineBaggott · 16/02/2007 13:13

Like the Monsoon ones - MamaG's own choice was nice the others are horrid!

Songbird · 16/02/2007 13:19

Mmnnn, Monsoon ones are gorgeous, and that top style should suit large norkage (you'll probably spend all day hoiking up a strapless dress, plus you'll probably get mono-boob). However, my mum reckons green is unlucky for weddings (mind you, she won't even let me put new shoes on the table! ). You might check your mum doesn't have similar greenophopbia!

MamaG · 16/02/2007 13:43

oh i didn't know that about green - better check, thanks for that

Strapless dresses risk 'back cleavage' unless you are boney and skinny. Not a good look.

MamaG · 16/02/2007 14:13

lol at back cleavage

strapless dresses should be altered to fit under the boobs around the rib cage. That is where they should be tight fitting to keep them up and it also stops them being to tight around the top of the boobs/back and creating bulges.

MamaG · 16/02/2007 14:21

yes my wedding dress was like that. gorgeous.

hope expat doesn't see this thread

Like the Monsoon ones esp, also think that Monsoon cut well for womanly shapes, ie boobs and hips, and their dresses are often the right level of formality for weddings...

MamaG · 16/02/2007 22:33

yes I must look properly, in teh shop
