Would you buy second hand make up?

I have about half a dozen bottles of foundation that have been sampled once or twice and never touched again because they don't agree with my sensitive skin.

I want to try selling them on eBay but do people buy second hand make up? Would you? It seems a huge waste to throw them out but I just can't use them.

I've discovered that mineral powder works best with my temperamental face

I would buy it off a friend/relative but not off ebay. Sorry. Is there anyone you could give it to? Teenage relatives? Students?

Momentumista · 02/12/2016 14:24

Give and makeup accepts used makeup (apart from mascara & lip gloss) - so I guess that would include foundation which has been opened.

They are also doing a Christmas shoebox appeal - but if you scroll down to the bottom of the page there is all the info about the usual make-up donating.

FemelleReynard · 02/12/2016 14:26

I've sold used foundation on ebay, and they didn't remove the listing.

Granted it was Estee Lauder that I'd spent plenty of cash on and realised it was just the wrong colour for me after one use. I got back about 80% of what it cost me (but the bottle was basically full, in original box etc), so was worth it to me.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/12/2016 14:40

Femelle- was that fairly recently as I do remember them allowing it years ago then they changed it?

Belmo · 02/12/2016 14:45

I buy foundation on eBay - I like clinique stuff that's £24 a bottle and have got it barely used for a tenner a couple of times. Foundation is the only thing I'd buy I think.

crayfish · 02/12/2016 14:48

No I wouldn't. I've had a blusher from a friend before but she had only used it once and I know her. Foundation, definitely not and I wouldn't even consider eye makeup.

Mindtrope · 02/12/2016 15:02

Used foundation does sell, just do an advanced search on ebay and you will be able to see what stuff has sold for.

Good brands sell, you may struggle a bit with Boots stuff.

QuimReaper · 02/12/2016 15:27

I stand corrected Dame!

I'd be interested to see if they enforce that or just say it to cover their jacksies.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/12/2016 15:33

I'm sure they just do it to cover themselves, clearly they don't enforce it as posters buy used.

I can't believe gym woman asking to use a mascaraShock

Emmageddon · 02/12/2016 16:16

Take it to your local charity shop. Ours have hardly used perfumes, bath oils, foundation, mascara (eek!!) and other stuff - admittedly they are all in the 50p or less basket, but every little helps.

I wouldn't try to sell it.

Alternatively, stick it on Freegle.

Dulcimena · 02/12/2016 16:24

Have sold items tried once or twice but not right for me. Is against Ebay rules and when you list it, you can't change condition to "used" for example. However I've always made it very clear in the listing title and description that it has been tested and I've never had a listing removed or anyone complain. This was a while ago though, I feel buyers are maybe more ruthless than they used to be.

BusterGonad · 02/12/2016 17:02

Anything sells on eBay, I'd give it a whirl OP, I bet it sells.

VickyRsuperstar · 02/12/2016 17:12

If it was me I would see if it's acceptable to offer it for free on your local Gumtree (there is a freebie section as well as the sales pages) or Freecycle / Freegle pages. I personally wouldn't use second hand make up, but I'm very into recycling and I've seen other people more than happy to take/buy everything. At a Salvation army table top bric a bra/ clothes sale one lady was looking for second hand underpants and I thought that was really icky!

hollieberrie · 02/12/2016 17:30

I definitely would, but i've never been one to be overly concerned with hygiene Grin. Agree with donating to a charity shop. Check if they accept toiletries though. I volunteer in a charity shop (large chain) and they bin all toiletries unless they are gift sets, but our local Dogs Trust shop has a lovely huge basket of treats, everything 50p. I've had some great things from there. Bought a posh brand half used suncream once, it was fine.

BabooshkaKate · 02/12/2016 17:57

MikeUniformMike

Years ago I was in the gym and someone asked to borrow my mascara. I'm a bit timid and sometimes struggle to say no. It was an expensive brand, hardly used and I couldn't face using it again.

Sorry, but this made me laugh! I remember being at school and everyone would share mascara and get conjunctivitis all the time.

All the foundations are pump nozzles. I have to exfoliate, moisturise and wear foundation for at least an hour before any issues become obvious, hence ending up with so many bloody bottles.

Thanks all, I think I will donate to Give and Make Up, tis the season after all!

We all shared Constance Carrol mascara and Heather Shimmer lippie tooGrin

wtffgs · 02/12/2016 18:22

Never - I can't understand why anyone would - just yuk.

Miserylovescompany2 · 02/12/2016 19:01

I wouldn't chance selling on eBay. The woman's refuge sounds like a good idea though. Some of those women only have the clothes they stand in.

ProseccoBitch · 02/12/2016 19:14

I'd give it to friends if they wanted it but definitely wouldn't sell it (or buy it)

MuseumOfCurry · 02/12/2016 19:19

If it were my only option, I would.

In my current set of circumstances, absolutely not.

NameChanger22 · 02/12/2016 19:58

I wouldn't buy second-hand mascara, eyeliner or lipstick, but everything else I would. I don't have a problem with second hand stuff in general.

A friend of mine was a bit disgusted that I would buy second hand kitchen ware/plates etc. until pointed out that when you eat in restaurants you are eating off plates that lots of people have eaten off.

midwoodmakeup · 02/12/2016 21:28

Depends on what the product is. Any cream or liquid products are more susceptible to bacteria than powder products and your better off avoiding those. Also check the shelf life on the product if its unopened.

The vast majority of refuges are not allowed to hand out certain items to service users make up that has been opened is usually a no no.

dudsville · 03/12/2016 03:47

No I wouldn't consider it. I'd go without. But others might so what's the harm in trying? I've bought the wrong colour foundation before but as I liked the make I just bought a colour in the same make to mix it to my colour.

Rufus27 · 03/12/2016 10:20

I wouldnt do it, but I have sold loads of second hand make up on Ebay. Used perfume and used foundation sells easily in my experience. I guess it's a cheap way to sample something, though I cant say it would be for me!
