Please tell me it doesn't matter if everyone else is wearing trousers...

...but I am wearing a dress to the company Christmas dinner.

I had my outfit all planned - a long black and gold dress from Monsoon with a black Jane Norman shrug and black heels. It looks nice. I have a pixie cut and don't wear shed loads of make up, so I don't look too try hard in it.

But then today in work everyone was talking about what they were wearing and almost everyone said "black trousers and a sparkly top".

I'm 38 not 16, why should I care what anyone else wears? But now I have a nagging doubt in my mind that I will stick out like a sore thumb.

WWYD?

I am no style guru but black trousers and sparkly top sounds a bit 90s mum to me.

It also depends on the venue and format of the evening.

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 30/11/2016 22:12

Black trousers and sparkly top is dull.

Your outfit sounds fab Grin.

MsUnderstanding · 30/11/2016 22:14

black trousers and a sparkly top dull, dull, dull. Wear your outfit.

Ohdearducks · 30/11/2016 22:15

Wear the shit out of it and put them all to shame!

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/11/2016 22:16

It is a dinner in a hotel with a disco afterwards. Not dolled up to the nines posh but it is the big annual whole company do.

I think I am extra paranoid as I have an interview next week for a promotion. So I don't want to attract attention as being the weird one who doesn't fit in.

There's no need to criticise what the others are wearing - your dress sounds lovely and you won't look out of place.

MsUnderstanding · 30/11/2016 22:20

Fitting in isn't nesscarily a positive attribute. Sometimes you need to be brave enough to go against the grain.

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/12/2016 06:17

Thank you for your replies.

Definitely going with the dress. Nothing at all against black trousers and sparkly tops, I just find the dress more flattering on me.

Hoping that I look "different" in a good way rather than a scary way Grin

Wagga 90s mum Grin Wear the dress OP, I always wear dresses (long legs trousers never long enough) and I love them, my all time fav is short risqué playsuit and little heels. I love dressing up.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 01/12/2016 06:56

Always better to be over dressed than under dressed! Your outfit sounds nice.

BusterGonad · 01/12/2016 07:03

Well said Vivienne, that's my motto too.

mumgointhroughtorture · 01/12/2016 07:04

I went to a hen do last weekend with 28 other girls and all of them wore jeans and trousers with scarves and coats. I wore a dress and no coat . Judging by clothes in New Look etc atm it seems it's not "fashionable" to dress up to go out anymore , dresses etc been replaced with jeans . Sod that wear the dress :)

BusterGonad · 01/12/2016 07:19

I'm coveting this at the moment, it's taking over my mind like Satan!

Please tell me it doesn't matter if everyone else is wearing trousers...
JemimaMuddledUp · 01/12/2016 08:21

That dress is lovely buster

This is my dress - doesn't look that special in the picture but it is really flattering on me. It probably isn't "in" this season as I've had it for a couple of years, but I'm not enormously worried about that.

SolomanDaisy · 01/12/2016 08:47

Wow, that's a beautiful dress!

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 01/12/2016 08:48

You'll look beautiful, wear it with confidence. And have a wonderful time!

BusterGonad · 01/12/2016 08:49

The link didn't work OP, can you do a screen shoot? I'm not in the U.K. So maybe the site is restricted? I just love the butterfly dress and I want it badly!!! I'm obsessed with lace, birds and butterfly's and skater style dresses! Lol. Maybe not everyone's taste but it's 100% me!

BitOutOfPractice · 01/12/2016 08:52

Buster I WANT that dress. No I need it!

ICJump · 01/12/2016 08:56

That dress is pretty! It is perfect for the event you've described.

BusterGonad · 01/12/2016 09:00

Argh. BitOutOf don't start. I want it more. It's from Oasis. I'm so in love with it. Go on the website and watch the video, she lifts the lace up and the birds and butterfly's are under the lace! Wtf....it's amazing!!!!!!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 01/12/2016 09:02

Well you're hardly turning up in a sexy Santa suit Grin, it's just a black and gold dress. It looks great in the picture.

I don't think you'll stick out in it at all. There will almost certainly be others in dresses or have you taken a survey of the whole office?!
If there's a disco, I would wear something I could dance in as I love nothing better than throwing myself around a dance floor (maybe that's why I've never been promoted? Confused).

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with what you're wearing and confident. Don't overthink it and have a great time.

Dulcimena · 01/12/2016 09:04

They will all be looking at you enviously and wishing they'd made more of an effort. Have a great night.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/12/2016 09:07

If you can't wear a dress for a Christmas do, then when can you.

People are sooo depressingly casual for most of the year. You have carte blanche to dress up to the 9s at this time of year.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/12/2016 09:21

I think you can never go wrong with a dress. I rarely wear anything else.

Have a lovely time op and feel fabulous in your dress

CaraAspen · 01/12/2016 09:43

Trousers? Ugh.
Your dress sounds waaaaay nicer.
