I will start... Hush Tara dress in claret/burgundy. The colou was just blah on me & the skirt wayyyyyy too tight & the top drowned me. So odd, & I so badly wanted to love it.

Also ordered some tulle skirts online (Needle & Thread etc) as I need something For Xmas parties and for a swanky ball. Suffice to say I do not suit tulle. I looked utterly ridiculous. Blush

Gin I'm 5'4 size 10 top and size 8 bottom. Probably slightly prefer the Tara as the length is easier to adjust with the ruching. The Tina does feel more expensive though - but then it is!

Flo I quite agree re the jacket being a good buy for someone, I think it looks much more expensive than it is and fits really nicely - just too much hardware for me ( and you)!

GinAndOnIt · 01/11/2016 11:30

Aahh thank you! I'm the same height, but 8 top and 10 bottom.

neveradullmoment99 · 01/11/2016 17:48

Any type of poncho or wrap. It looks fine on me but I just dont live in a county that is the correct weather. Its either too cold or too wet or I am not wearing something that it looks ok with. The same goes with any form of gilet. I had a lovely faux fur one and ended up flogging it on ebay.

missjoanie · 01/11/2016 17:55

Wishing I'd not opened this thread - my Tara is coming today! Will report back...

Destinysdaughter · 01/11/2016 18:01

Pp are often scornful about getting their colours/ style done, but if you do it, it means you can completely avoid making fashion mistakes as you know definitively what does/doesn't work for you. I often covet things that are beautiful but I know won't work on me so I just walk away from them. I don't have any fashion mistakes any more...

Floisme · 01/11/2016 18:45

But Destiny it's the mistakes that make it funSmile

Destinysdaughter · 01/11/2016 18:53

Hmmm fun maybe, but expensive and unnecessary, definitely! 😀

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 01/11/2016 18:55

Hush azalea dress. If I got into a top shop 10 I'd be chuffed: this was a 6 and it swamped me. Dipping hemline, looked all frumpy and bad. Was so looking forward to it, too!

itssquidstella · 01/11/2016 18:56

I coveted, and bought, a black play suit from Topshop Tall. I was really excited because I'd never seen one in the talk section before, and normal ones are always too short in the crotch.

I've worn it once. I have a narrow back and no boobs (despite broad shoulders), and it just hangs at the front. The v is too deep to wear a bra with, and as soon as I add a vest top or something underneath it stops being sexy and starts looking matronly.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 01/11/2016 19:09

Could you wear it back to front quidstella ?

Destiny You never buy anything then try it on and realise it doesn't suit you/doesn't fit/your 3 year old niece has that pinafore Grin etc..
Wow, you really have your shit together!

Floisme · 01/11/2016 19:11

Have to disagree with you Destiny. I've had so much pleasure from some of my mistakes - looking back makes me howl Grin I can't begrudge the money. Apart from my brief foray into 'investment dressing' - now that really was a waste.

Right, reporting back for anyone vaguely interested Grin
Tried my Hush Tara on and it's, erm, ok. Not groundbreaking, not the best dress ever but it seems to be in proportion. Doesn't make me look too heavy or my flat bum too scrawny (what a catch I sound). I ordered an xs and I'm an hourglass size 8 and it's fine. Think I'll keep it - can see it being useful. Now going off to weep at describing an item of clothing as useful.

BestIsWest · 01/11/2016 20:45

Caramel cashmere cardigan. I thought it woud be just what I needed for work to go with grey, black and navy. Nope, it makes me feel frumpy.

balkanscot · 01/11/2016 21:20

I second the Tara dress. Got convinced by all the raving reviews. I kept trying it on for 24 hours. As PP said, too baggy on top, way too tight skirt. Did absolutely eff all for my figure. Returned it ASAP.

Also Hush coated midi skirt. Wanted to love it so badly. Kept it, thinking it will be OK. Eventually. It wasn't. It still isn't. No matter how I wear it I keep looking like a middle aged urban milkmaid. I still want to like it. Probably will never happen. Destined to lurk in the back of the wardrobe for eternity. Like a pint of milk gone wrong in the work fridge that nobody seems to want to throw out.

Oh, yes, the most expensive mistake was a pair of Prada black loafers. Were hideous. But I bought them anyway. Prada and all that, innit? Kept wearing them. Kept feeling like a wazzock whenever I wore them. Soldiered on for a while. Then gave up, alongside my bank balance.

Blush
dudsville · 01/11/2016 21:28

I once, perhaps during an out of body experience, bought a black and white zippered up the front middle dress. White panels either side of the zip. I looked so fancy dress but I thought, hey, I can pull this off. No. I couldn't and I didn't. How my colleagues still talk to me I'll never understand.

GinAndOnIt · 02/11/2016 07:09

Oh dear, joanie - I don't think you're quite selling it to me Grin

I'm going to stop looking at the Hush website now until I've ordered and tried the Tina dress. No point falling in love with anything if it's all going to fit weirdly!

RebelandaStunner · 02/11/2016 09:42

Haven't had any mistakes for ages, far too selective now, but the last one I remember was a black and baby blue jumper from Top shop.
It made me look Ill.
I gave it DD as her skin colouring is different to mine but she never wore it and it went to the charity shop.

fishofdespair · 02/11/2016 10:45

Sainsburys jeans, I really wanted to love them because they are so cheap, but they are sadly too stretchy and feel odd because they have so much polyester in them.

A beautiful warm coat, great but it's black and it feels a bit somber and glum.

Dowser · 02/11/2016 12:49

Love this thread.
Flo you must tell us about investment dressing.
All the gory details. Can smell a good story here.
I'll just fetch my cup of tea.

My worst mistake was a grey knitted tunic, long slitty armholes. Worn with sleeves. Put it on . Looked in the mirror and saw my gran looking back at me.
Yep it even skipped a generation. Obviously my mum had too much sense.
I'm a skater dress type of person, or something with a waist.
That was not a good look.
Fortunately I don't pay a lot for clothes and my cousin looked so much better in it.

brandyandsummergloves · 02/11/2016 12:57

Pink flowery pyjamas. Looked pretty and cosy. DD said "they look like Nans bedroom curtains"
Pooh Blush

rightknockered · 02/11/2016 13:03

A long padded black coat around 4 years ago. Never will I ever wear any padded item again....

rightknockered · 02/11/2016 13:03

Shakes stick at puffa jacket comeback

GinAndOnIt · 02/11/2016 13:11

I was telling DP about a new dress I ordered last night. I said (to justify the price) 'it's 100% wool' and he said 'WOOL? Has [insert Great Aunty's name] been giving you style advice?'

His Great Aunty is 97 Grin

(I think he's imagining some stiff wool number as ladies would wear a hundred years ago. I hope his reaction will be slightly better when he actually sees it)

Floisme · 02/11/2016 14:47

It was a dark sartorial time Dowser - known as my Hobbs period. Nothing wrong with Hobs - good shop just not my style. I'd just turned 50 and swallowed the line about buying less, buying better but missed the most important bit... Buy things you love. My husband (to whom I am still married) asked if I was channelling Margaret Thatcher (ok he didn't use the word 'channelling').
I must have spent hundreds and wore virtually none of it cos a) I never really liked it b) hit the menopause and came out a different body shape and c) got a different job where nobody dresses up.
They're the only fashion mistakes I regret!
