Real fur

Out of interest, does anyone here wear it?

I don't. I'm veggie and wouldn't wear leather either.

Saying that, it seems to be getting a surge of popularity at the minute!

Not looking for a fight, just curious about people's opinions!

Thanks for the link about leather, here. I knew about that from my degree in textiles - it was more the manufacturers of plastics releasing all pollutants into the environment that I wanted to know about. Sorry, should have made that clear. DH works for a plastics manufacturer and he tells me the fines are huge for breaches of environmental regulations.

The likes of the
Kardashian's are really promoting fur right now! I wonder how much they were paid?

I wear UGGs which I understand are a by product of the Australian meat industry. I recently bought a cashmere wrap with what I thought was a fake fur trim. I now know it is rabbit trim and with what I have heard ot the Chinese rabbit industry I am horrified.

I don't have any moral issue with eating or wearing well raised fur/leather and wish there was way to buy ethical fur in the same way I can buy organic meat.

Although I don't know that much about the process to make leather and assume that it's mostly a bi-product of the meat industry

The softer and more supple the leather - the younger the cow it was taken from. It's not unknown for calves to be taken from the womb and slaughtered for the most supple and premium leather. It is definitely not a by product of the meat industry!

I used to work in a shoe shop selling only leather shoes - I don't have a leg to stand on to complain about fur. Though as I'm getting older, and wiser, I am feeling more and more uncomfortable with the whole animal cruelty in food and fashion

unicorns
Can you post some links to back up your theory about subtle leather? Because it is weird that none of that is listed on the PETA page about leather
You'd think that if it was even close to true, they'd be the first to publicise it
And I'm really interested in how or why a calf would be taken from the womb to sell for £50 for leather rather than selling it a few weeks after birth for several hundred as a veal calf, or several months after birth for thousands
-it's almost like you've made the whole thing up--

Never. Also avoid angora, down and merino wool for abuse reasons. I would never wear a vintage fur either, as I don't want to propogate the idea that fur is something to aspire to on any level. It saddens me that human nature is still so base as to inflict pain and suffering on an animal for something as frivolous as something to wear.

aniceearlynight · 28/10/2016 09:00

It's only too true about unborn calf skin, I'm afraid. You can read about it here: www.all-creatures.org/articles/ar-pregnancy.html
It's made me see calfskin boots and buttery soft handbags in a different light.

Returning to the original post, it's (arguably) more ethical to wear old fur than new leather but, as BeauHeaux says, that is likely to propagate the idea that wearing fur is acceptable.

Gowgirl · 28/10/2016 09:10

I own vintage fur, only comes out when its really cold though, I have a white rabbit, a blonde mink and my first very tatty coat of unknown animal which I hold on to because I'm sentimental, a ll are circa about 1920....

Rhonda I was referring to the petro-chemical industry's effect on the environment. Just google crude oil spill for more details.
