How old is too old for a dungaree dress?

SlipperyJack · 17/10/2016 15:16

And indeed how unthin?

Dress like this one - not denim, I don't want to look like a refugee from the Come On Eileen video. m.newlook.com/shop/womens/dresses/dark-grey-cord-pinafore-dress_379686903?pProduct=379686957

I'm 43, size 14.

I have this Topshop one. I love it. I'm 42, size 8 but with big boobs, actually it draws attention away from them as it's loose.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 18/10/2016 09:32

Well, after saying you'd get positive reponses, OP, the nay-sayers are out in force!

As for the "they're kids' clothes" comments, well, yes, but that doesn't mean grown-ups can't wear similar. Mary Quant's 60s looks were in many ways an appropriation of children's styles for adults. No one says kid's can't wear jeans because they are adult clothes. no-one says women can't wear jeans because they are men's work clothes, etc, etc.

I have a small bust and decent legs so I feel they suit me. And I don't look like a "naughty schoolgirl" in them!

GinAndOnIt · 18/10/2016 09:39

I really like them. But then I've always really liked them. I don't remember much from childhood any more, but I do remember having two tartan pinafores in different colours, and mum having to pretend they were 'in the wash' so I'd wear something different for once. I've never really stopped wearing them, so I'm rather glad they are considered a fashionable item of clothing at the moment and seem to be everywhere Grin

I'm probably far too old, but I love them so I don't much care.

FoxesOnSocks · 18/10/2016 09:46

I don't like them so wouldnt wear it, mind you i never liked then even as a child. In fact I have strong memories of wearing one with great resistance and resentfully staring at it in my wardrobe considering its downfall.

Saying that we all have different tastes, I'm pretty sure how I'm dressed today isn't for all. So if you like it, wear it.

drspouse · 18/10/2016 09:48

I'd wear them if I was flat-chested but I'm not.
I agree cord is nicer.

OverScentedFanjo · 18/10/2016 10:02

I think I'm too old, or too big of nork. Probably both.

I tried one on, a black denim one. I looked ridiculous.

Took it back rather shamefaced. 😳 then the sales assistant said her daughter had returned her's too. Going by the age of the sales assistant I'd guess her daughter was teen. 😳

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 18/10/2016 10:05

I think they're lovely, and I'd like one, but have to be honest and say I'd be worried people would think I'd look silly or trying to be younger than I am... Which is silly, I know.

38, very little bust to speak of.

MarklahMarklah · 18/10/2016 10:08

Unless you're dead, you're never too old to wear what the hell you like. :)
If in doubt, ask yourself, "Would Baddiewinkle wear it?"
If you don't know who she is, I can assure you that she would wear it!

leccybill · 18/10/2016 10:11

Not sure of people saying no here, but I asked the very same question a couple of weeks back and it was a almost completely positive response.

I bought a black denim one from Dorothy Perkins and I love it.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 10:29

I have been wearing pinafores, dungarees dresses long before they ever came out of fashion. Think Alexa Chung [ is that who it is in the picture] looks fantastic in hers. Its a sexy look on her. I don't go for that look. Mine is a knee length one more appropriate to my age.
I have always loved the sixties vibe. Atm sorely tempted by a boden one which i think looks lovely and 'grown up' and the style i really have loved over the years.
Boden pinny

I may purchase.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 10:29

...in the age appropriate 'long.' of course.

AuntieStella · 18/10/2016 10:40

I don't think it's the length that's the issue - look at the number of mini-skirted over-50s in the recent thread on that.

It's how it looks wrong on all but the tiny-breasted, because bib fronts just don't sit well with boobs. Both how they look, whether they stay put, and how boobs move round their edges.

(And some styles do scream 'schoolgirl' which makes me shudder a bit)

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 10:46

I was joking about the length. I do agree with the boobs bit. Not good with bibs. I think I look ok and I am a 30 E. Everyone has different ideas and its impossible to know what some people look like with it on. I have always been a bit quirky in my style.
There is certain things i wouldnt be seen dead in. Many people will wear them so will end with each to their own.

AuntieStella · 18/10/2016 10:46

neveradullmoment99

What you've linked isn't a dungaree dress (as per thread title).

That sort of no-sleeve shift dress isn't something that I'd choose for me, but is OK as it doesn't have the bib-front pitfalls and is just more stylish.

It's look best as a mini, I think.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 10:48

Yes, it is like a sleeveless shift and i agree can look fine at all ages :)

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 10:49

and yes to it being mini Grin

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 10:50

I have a picture in my mind....
The boden dress linked above, long sleeved stripey tee under it, black super thick tights and a massive chunky necklace in black.

drspouse · 18/10/2016 11:49

Now I want that Boden dress!

drspouse · 18/10/2016 15:52

It may have fallen into my basket.

Diddlydokey · 18/10/2016 18:08

I have a £10 off £30 boden code

Floisme · 18/10/2016 18:14

I don't think they suit all body shapes - what does? But if you want to comment on ridiculous clothing for an adult then let's at least be consistent:

Leather jackets that don't even keep your arse warm, festooned with random zips, studs and quilting - Absurd.
Whole threads devoted to the width of your trouser leg - Grow up.
Shoes that balance on a three inch spike - Huh?
Drilling holes through your earlobes and hanging bits of metal from them - What have you been smoking and please can I try some?

Alternatively we could just agree that an interest in fashion is pretty ridiculous at any age - and what of it?

neveradullmoment99 · 18/10/2016 18:48

Thanks for the code. I used it on the Ottoman dress :)

Matchstickbox · 18/10/2016 18:52

Did what any one thinks, try it and if you like it do it.
I love my trouser dungarees wore them loads in summer.
Size 14
Age 33 and three quarters

JanetStWalker · 18/10/2016 19:01

bigbuttons · 18/10/2016 19:04
