Where is the 'warm, waterproof, bum-coverer coat' thread this year?

I finally really do need one (moving to the coast soon) and remember seeing excellent advice here before. Have I missed the thread, or is this a fallow year..?

Janelles come up big, I'd say they are designed to have a jumper underneath. Mine is a 12 and measures 21" armpit to armpit on the outside. And you can wash it with special Nikwax shampoo from the camping shop. I have slept under money in an emergency, it was toasty warm!

thenightsky · 12/10/2016 22:37

Loving the length of that Janelle. Very tempted.

carmenta · 12/10/2016 22:38

The Janelle is massive. I'm normally a size 10 (with broad shoulders and a big bum) and my Janelle is a size 8 with room to spare.

Beckadillo · 13/10/2016 08:53

Thanks all, shall definitely attempt to find some to try on first then, with chunky jumper to hand. John Lewis stock them don't they?

Bugger me - a quick look at their stockists page and apparently I only have to walk a mile down the road to find their nearest concession in Morleys - who says Brixton's got all gentrified?!?

Get yourself to a Seasalt outlet, I tried a Janelle on last weekend at Clarks Village in plum it was £65.99. Didn't suit me (no adjustment to the waist so I looked like a tall sausage Blush) plus the fluffy lining is also in the hood. We walk the school and preschool run so if raining I don't like a fluffy-inside hood.

FashionFiend · 13/10/2016 21:38

Hi Beckadillo, yeah I was annoyed it was an expensive coat. I have small kids so it would have gotten muddy from the park/playground in the winter. I'd say I washed it twice the first winter and then after another wash the following year it looked very faded/shabby. Best of luck with your coat hunt!

dudsville · 14/10/2016 10:42

I'm still on my north face arctic parka - I do think mine is a thing of beauty, but I didn't get it in black and the colour is very nice. It's many years old and still looks new (it washes really easily!).

MissWimpyDimple · 14/10/2016 11:13

Has anyone tried a Lands End Squall coat? The stadium squall comes in petite so I'm hopeful that the knee length would actually be knee length on me!

Lalsy · 14/10/2016 11:21

MissWimpy, I have a Land's End Squall Parka in black. It is absolutely the business, high quality, great finishing details like elasticated band around the cuffs, properly waterproof and warm when done up, but doesn't feel overly hot or heavy when open. Excellent pockets. Can you tell I like it?Grin.

Three of my family got them in the sale last year. Beware sizing - the US/UK thing.

stillsingingintherain · 14/10/2016 12:53

@wiltedcabbage how warm is the coat you recommended? I'm looking for something fairly lightweight as I wear my super thick down filled coat when its properly cold.

MorrisZapp · 14/10/2016 13:00

I've got an awesome Didrikson but it's too warm for autumn. I tried on a Janelle yesterday but it looks like a body bag on me! I'm 5 foot four. Great design but just too long.

Beckadillo · 14/10/2016 13:04

MorrisZap which one do you have? Feel like I need a warm-waterproof spreadsheet now... any techies out there? Fancy building an appropriate app?!?

PickAChew · 14/10/2016 23:03

Morris - I'm 5'4, which is why I went for the Tiller coat. It's a much cuter length on us slightlyshortarses :) It's supposed to be low hip but is mid thigh on me - and all my height is in my body.

josCS · 09/11/2016 22:42

If you sign up to seasalt for their emails they usually do a discount at this time of year with free delivery and returns. I got the Janelle in a size bigger than normal so i can wear a thick jumper underneath and it isn't tight around my bum! This is key for me as I wear for dog walking. Great coat highly recommend only problem I have had is one of the zips going on the pockets.

CallarMorvern · 10/11/2016 04:45

I feel the cold badly and losing weight hasn't helped there. I have the North Face Arctic Parka, have just got it out and washed it for winter, will wear it through to March.

I'm actually not keen on the look of it, unflattering and hate the colour ( very brown). But it is warm, very waterproof, long ( I'm 5'10) and washes and dries easily. I am coveting a nice bright red replacement - Why are North Face colours so grungey? But it is the most expensive item of clothing I've ever owned and I can't afford to buy another.

mogloveseggs · 10/11/2016 05:45

I have this and it's lovely and warm. Definitely covers my bum but I'm only 5'1".

TheFear · 10/11/2016 07:14

Seasalt Janelle here too.
I'm 5'9 and usually a size 14 but I bought the 16 to wear over jumpers etc, fits great, toasty warm, light to carry (I commute so tram can be hot), totally waterproof. Have received tons of compliments with it. Long enough so there is only a couple of inches between bottom of coat and top of knee high boots.
This is my 3rd winter with it and it's still perfect, washes very well and none of the bits have broken or fallen off (zips etc).

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 10/11/2016 08:14

I've recently bought the Didrikson Alba, and I love it. It's the warmest weight but I don't find it too much, just lovely and cosy. I bought mine from Vikingkids and it was the best price I could find. They had quite a few past season coats on sale too.

I had the Didrikson Angelina last year and I love that, but unfortunately I have put on a bit of weight and struggling to fasteni it up, hence the new purchase. A lot of people have said that Didrikson come up big, but I would disagree, if anything they are on the small side. Both of mine are definitely snug on top!

Someone mentioned that their Didrikson faded. The Angelina is a cotton type fabric and I could imagine this would happen. The Alba is a different type of fabric (not quite walking jacket type) and I think it would wash well.

JohnCheese · 10/11/2016 14:52

I have a Didriksons Taylor from a couple of years ago. Incredibly windproof and waterproof but I don't find it that warm. I bought it thinking I would be toasty warm but nah, definitely needs layering. Definitely not what I would call cosy. I want cosy!

J0nah · 12/11/2016 18:27

I'm a total sucker for mumsnet recommendations (castor oil for better eyelashes for example) and needed a waterproof, padded but not too bulky winter coat after getting drenched walking the dogs last weekend. My blue (squid ink?) Janelle seasalt has just arrived and looks and feels great ! Glad the weather report is for rain tomorrow.

Drywhitethanks · 12/11/2016 21:26

I've bought []www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/m/locations this one]] to replace my Merlly Wakefield MN practical, waterproof, bum covering coat of 2012 brilliant! Long, cosy, can I'll waist in, truly waterproof. Highly recommend

Drywhitethanks · 12/11/2016 21:26

this

ChocolateWombat · 16/11/2016 21:16

I'd go for Seasalt too. However I have one called NorthStar I think. It has a jersey cotton lining and has poppers at the back so you can pull it in. It has a bit of wadding but not loads. Mine has stayed waterproof for about 3 years so far. I like it a lot. It comes to about my knees and has a zip that can move up so you can move your legs more or sit down easily, if you know what I mean, as well as decent pockets.

YesThisIsMe · 16/11/2016 21:26

Greetings OP from fellow Brixtonian. Did you get to Morleys and did they have any good Seasalt coats (I realise that I could just drop in there myself on the school run).

I have a much loved North Face Brooklyn from a few years ago which is waterproof and (IMO) attractive, but it is a bit too warm for current weather, and probably not long enough for people taller than hobbits like me.
