Fashion rules that don't work for you

As the owner of ample boobs, I look incredibly frumpy in v-necks, not much better in scooped. Boat, crew and slashed necks are much more flattering for me, no matter what every style guide says.

And I love clashing colours. Red looks great with purple and I love the contrast of orange and pink.

I'm looking for new winter looks so please inspire me with your cavalier disregard for Trinny, Gok, et all.

High healed shoes to lengthen your legs and make you look slimmer? nope. Some women (myself included) can't walk in them and look stupid trying to.

RebelandaStunner · 01/10/2016 21:30

Statement necklaces!
Not for me.

dudsville · 01/10/2016 21:36

I second the boot leg pear shape thing. Makes me look short at 5'7" and dumpy rather than curvy.

TheVirginQueen · 01/10/2016 21:38

Oh the white shirt!
Never owned one. Never wanted one!

sentia · 01/10/2016 21:49

Pencil skirts do NOT suit everyone. They make me look ridiculously bottom heavy.

And I absolutely agree about bootcuts not suiting pear shapes. They just make me look stocky.

SallyR0se · 01/10/2016 21:58

Agree about statement necklaces. Just too busy for me!

Wedding gowns. I tried in a tiara once & looked like a kid dressing up.

KanyesVest · 01/10/2016 22:06

Pencil skirts are hideous on me. All they do is highlight every one of my many lumps and bumps.

I'm fat and look fucking boss in horizontal stripes. I love stripy items.

Statelychangers · 01/10/2016 22:18

I am a hourglass autumn but I love crisp white shirts buttoned up to the neck, I love black polo necks. I love navy too.

TeenyfTroon · 01/10/2016 22:24

Thanks, Fuzzypeggy.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/10/2016 22:30

If you've got it flaunt it. Being somewhat under-endowed I don't get the angst from the curvier ladies on here. There aren't any tops that I know of that are flattering on me. I look flat chested in all of them sad

I quite like my boobs and I'm not averse to flaunting them, but you do need to be careful when you're dressing big boobs. A top which can look very modest on a model can be incredibly revealing on big boobs. I was away delivering a training course to clients and had taken a new dress which I'd tried on, bit of a V neck but still suitably conservative. Until I sat down. Thankfully I (unusually) but my dress on before makeup then sat down in front of a mirror and went "ah crap" and changed to my backup dress.

LadyB49 · 01/10/2016 22:49

I'm Apple shape and big boobs.
Wear only V necks and scarves.
Must have sleeves preferably 3/4. Or else I push them up and secure with a rubber band. I think it's more flattering.
Love high waisted trousers as long as good tunic/ sweater/dress is of a length I like....usually mid thigh or knee length.
Tailored jacket or cardi must have set in sleeves for definition, definitely not raglan.
I hate wrap dress, puts stones on me.
I used to avoid horizontal stripes but go with it now.
Def straight leg jeans though would wear skinny jeggings under a dress.

bluesbaby · 01/10/2016 23:53

Yeah, definitely no bootlegs! My straight legs and skinnies that aren't too skinny (and a size up in the waist than normal) are better on my hourglass.

Yes to boat necks and slash necks. Off the shoulder too, along with bardot. I do have quite athletic shoulders though so maybe that's why they suit me! Same width as my hips so don't look like I'm about to topple over or anything.

Midi skirts and dresses - I'm 5 foot nothing with serious curves, I find these flattering and comfortable, and always get compliments when I wear them. No one ever calls me a shorty when I'm wearing this type of ensemble! This is supposed to be a no-go for people my height!

Maxi dresses - again something I've been told to avoid - but find they suit me very well if I get the right cut and height. Surprisingly, haven't had to take up any of the dresses I own, even when I wear them with flats. Maybe they are midis for normal people Grin TBH I think my bum and boobs steal so much of the fabric that it makes it shorter.

Short shorts - I know lots of short people that live in these but honestly, worst style ever, I'd rather be dead than caught in public in these.

Box crop tops - Not supposed to work on busty girls, luckily I'm short in the torso - They work as a little peekaboo on days when my tummy is flatter.

CoolToned · 02/10/2016 07:14

Skinny jeans for apple/rectangle. They just emphasize my big upper half so too much.

lasttimeround · 02/10/2016 08:03

I have big boobs and look great in tight polo necks. I have lovely shoulders long neck. I think this looks really elegant on me.

I also think i can look trashy in v-necks. I'm short and my boobs go out forwards quite high.. A neckline that looks OK in the mirror often reveals far too much viewed from higher up. Nothing like a day were every man stares down your cleavage to bring this home. Might be very va va voom a la gok but makes me feel incredibly awkward. I hate all his suggestions for my figure anyway as it just assumes I want all my assets out there and stared at while I wobble about in heels. Always watched that show wondering if anyone round ever be made over and not wear heels

StatisticallyChallenged · 02/10/2016 08:15

I think the rules just make too many assumptions about the rest of the wearer's shape. I also thing boat necks work on me (J cup boobs), although I really can't wear polo necks unless it's layered under something of a different colour. I have a fairly short neck, a bit of a chin issue, and high big boobs - if I wear a polo on its own it looks like my boobs come straight from (and are part of) my chin. I sometimes wear a light (uniqlo heattech) polo under a contrasting round neck pinafore type dress though and that works ok as the line is broken up.

I'm fairly hourglass shaped, but any excess weight I am carrying tends to sit on my lower abdomen so they just accentuate this and make me look pregnant. No thanks!

High waisted trousers/jeans etc are better comfort wise, but I never wear them with stuff tucked in as again I look pregnant. But, tbh, so do 95% of the people I see wearing that look. It needs a very flat stomach I think.

TheVirginQueen · 02/10/2016 08:18

nicknametaken there was an experimwnt done in a work setting once. Women with smaller boobs were were wearing the same style/items of clothing but nobody said they were dressed inappropriately for work. Women with larger boobs in the same tops, some people (probably students) ticked inappropriate for work.
It's almost like breasts are too female for work. Im small but i see that they are more trouble to dress in the workplace. Out side of work - then work with what you got etc

NicknameUsed · 02/10/2016 09:59

I'm fat and look fucking boss in horizontal stripes. I love stripy items.

I think it was on one of Gok Wan's shows or something similar where they proved that horizontal stripes were more slimming than vertical stripes. So that old wives tale was chucked out.

There is an article here about it.

cheeseandmarmite15 · 02/10/2016 10:05

High rise trousers and jeans are the most flattering look on me!

Low rise are uncomfortable and look awful!

Bootlegs are grim, they so not suit me and sorry to say but i don't think they suit anyone else either!

I do agree about raw hems, who wants to look like one of the Beverly Hillbilly's?!

CancellyMcChequeface · 02/10/2016 10:13

I wear socks with sandals. Shock

I'm yet to find a pair of sandals, even flat ones advertised as comfortable, that don't leave me with bleeding feet at the end of the day, from the straps rubbing. So for me it's either break the 'fashion rules' or not wear sandals at all.

I also wear maxi skirts all the time despite being short. They suit my figure and it's nearly impossible to find trousers that fit (14in difference between waist and hips).

Floisme · 02/10/2016 10:28

I don't like black with colour either. Fine as part of a pattern but in blocks, the black just seems to drain all the life out of the colour. But I think it's also because black trousers and a coloured top was my work outfit all through the baby/toddler years so I associate it with being too tired/not having time to think about clothes.

And I look ghastly in a white shirt, crisp or otherwise.

NicknameUsed · 02/10/2016 10:30

I have never come across the no colours with black "rule" before. I often wear colour with black and like the look.

StatisticallyChallenged · 02/10/2016 10:55

I think black with colour depends on what you're pairing it with. It'll drain a pastel, but I tend to wear lots of really strong bold colours (scarlets, strong cobalt blue, magenta, purples) and I think that looks fine with black

NicknameUsed · 02/10/2016 11:03

That's what I do Statistically

JohnCheese · 02/10/2016 11:05

High waisted trousers, especially jeans, need to go crawl back under the rock they came from. They flatter no one, not even the svelte gazelles that supposedly can carry off anything look awful. They're especially unkind on the behind.

Totally agree. I'm pear shaped and high waisted jeans leave me with yards of fabric at the waist and a backside that goes on for half my torso.
