Rosacea breakthrough - yucky alert!

So I've had rosacea and acne for 33 years. I've been on roaccutane low dose for around 2 years which controlled the acne but over the summer, the rosacea became out of control on my nose with blood red heat and multiple papules - around 10-15 bumps on nose at any one time. I saw my dermatologist a few weeks ago and she took me off roaccutane (gulp) and gave me Soolantro cream which contains an anti parasitic called ivermectin. The theory behind it is that rosacea is caused by demodex mites - don't Google it or you may be freaked! - and that this new prescription only cream kills the mites. Apparently the faeces from the mites cause irritation, bumps and redness in rosacea - studies have shown that every adult has demodex mites on their face but that rosaceans have 10 x the amount than normal population. To say I was sceptical was putting it mildly and I was very nervous about a new topical - had zero success with metrogel or fiancée in the past in fact they both made everything worse.
Well blow me down, the soolantro cream is bloody working - within 3 days ALL of the papules had gone - some bumps had been there for months and I thought had scarred. The skin is smoother and somehow thicker - I am two weeks in and the skin is much less red - more pink. Didn't post before now in case it was a fluke but so far so good.
Apparently there may be a flare at 3 weeks as any eggs laid at point of starting won't be killed until they hatch and that takes 3 weeks - baulk!- so if I get a flare at 3 weeks, I will report back as it would support the demodex theory.
At this point, I don't care about the yuckiness of it all just cuffed to bits that finally my rosacea is under control.
So if you have rosacea, get to your GP. Apparently it works best on popular rosacea and doesn't claim to just help redness but I've found it has definitely helped me on both counts.

Marking place. I'm getting married in 6 months and it would be great to improve my skin by then, I tried rosex but that was useless, and antibiotics gave me side effects. I've given up and rely on makeup now, but that's far from ideal.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 21/12/2016 00:26

Finacea also made my skin itchy and sore. Thanks for the info

No Kennington you don't need to get rid of pillows etc. Another very important thing is to make sure you wear sunscreen summer and winter ideally at least factor 30

Cardoon the tube of cream says one gram of cream contains 10mg of ivermectin.

PosiePootlePerkins · 21/12/2016 07:13

And so far I have had zero side effects, I don't even feel anything when its applied.

cardoon · 21/12/2016 07:34

Thanks Posie

I started to get rosacea and found a product by Dermalex really helped. It's a bit pricey at about £18 but think it can be cheaper online. I couldn't face going to the gp about yet another problem, and it wasn't too bad so didn't think they'd take it seriously (had years of not being given decent acne treatment) so decided to try this first. I just use it as a thin layer under moisturiser.

another Soolantra convert here! I've had rosacea for nearly ten years and was dependent on the oxytetracycline tablets and finacea cream, but still got hideous bumps and flare-ups. I've been using the Soolantra cream for about 6 weeks now and my skin looks amazing - I'd forgotten how nice it could be when not covered in spots and flushing... Sad I even find the base cream that the ivermectin's in has a good moisturising effect, and I don't feel the need to add a night cream on top (I use last thing at night). My GP hadn't heard of it, but has been really interested to see the effects on my skin - hopefully she'll add it to the surgery's available options, rather than throwing yet more antibiotics at the problem.

PosiePootlePerkins · 21/12/2016 17:18

Noel that's great that its working so well for you, it should definitely be more widely known about, I only found out about it from this thread and contacting the OP. Its so miserable having the bumps/spots and such a relief to have found an answer.

Kittenrush · 21/12/2016 17:28

Sorry I know this is a little off topic but did you have any side effects with the roaccutane. After the birth of my daughter my acne has just gone absolutely nuts. I tried absolutely everything before having her. Starting with over the counter spot creams/witch hazel/sudocrem/tcp. Then stuff from the dr topical abx, oral abx (variations of both) some work for a while others are less than useless. Nothing works permentantly. I am just after something that works. I'm so sick of the bottom of my face/neck being covered and constantly sore.

PosiePootlePerkins · 21/12/2016 19:01

Kitten sorry to hear you are suffering. I have never taken roaccutane but am bumping in case someone else has experience of it. Something that has helped me to a certain degree is the contraceptive pill, I alternate between dianette and yasmin, don't know if that's a route you could try? Good luck.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 21/12/2016 19:25

I took roaccutane for acne and had horrible side effects but it was worth it.

I have "borderline rosacea" according to the dermatologist.

My nose is red but not bumpy or itchy. Does that mean I still have mites?

Thanks

Kittenrush · 21/12/2016 19:38

Dianette worked beautifully that was the first thing the gp ever prescribed for me. Unfortunately it turns my into a fat, angry weirdo.
The mood swings I get on the pill are just devastating unfortunately :( what sort of side effects???
