Rosacea breakthrough - yucky alert!

Jmangel · 01/10/2016 14:47

So I've had rosacea and acne for 33 years. I've been on roaccutane low dose for around 2 years which controlled the acne but over the summer, the rosacea became out of control on my nose with blood red heat and multiple papules - around 10-15 bumps on nose at any one time. I saw my dermatologist a few weeks ago and she took me off roaccutane (gulp) and gave me Soolantro cream which contains an anti parasitic called ivermectin. The theory behind it is that rosacea is caused by demodex mites - don't Google it or you may be freaked! - and that this new prescription only cream kills the mites. Apparently the faeces from the mites cause irritation, bumps and redness in rosacea - studies have shown that every adult has demodex mites on their face but that rosaceans have 10 x the amount than normal population. To say I was sceptical was putting it mildly and I was very nervous about a new topical - had zero success with metrogel or fiancée in the past in fact they both made everything worse.
Well blow me down, the soolantro cream is bloody working - within 3 days ALL of the papules had gone - some bumps had been there for months and I thought had scarred. The skin is smoother and somehow thicker - I am two weeks in and the skin is much less red - more pink. Didn't post before now in case it was a fluke but so far so good.
Apparently there may be a flare at 3 weeks as any eggs laid at point of starting won't be killed until they hatch and that takes 3 weeks - baulk!- so if I get a flare at 3 weeks, I will report back as it would support the demodex theory.
At this point, I don't care about the yuckiness of it all just cuffed to bits that finally my rosacea is under control.
So if you have rosacea, get to your GP. Apparently it works best on popular rosacea and doesn't claim to just help redness but I've found it has definitely helped me on both counts.

I'm allergic to parabens, which are in Soolantra, so I used Lyclear instead - it works on demodex the same way. My GP prescribed it for me after I had results with the tube I bought over the counter.

I also found this blog very useful.

I had some flare ups initially, but I've gone from being an itchy, hot, bumpy mess to just the occasional hormonal spot. I used it for about 7 months, and stopped using it earlier this year. My symptoms haven't returned. I get a bit flushed after alcohol, but hot showers and stress don't cause me to burn anymore. The itchy spots have gone.

browneyesblue · 03/10/2016 22:12

I just checked - it's called Lyclear dermal cream and the active ingredient is permethrin. I think it cost about £9 over the counter, and one tube lasted for ages. The GP put it on prescription afterwards, and the dermatologist said he had prescribed it successfully in the past.

Great tip, thanks. I have the type which generally just flares up on my nose. I have just discovered sulphur cream which has worked wonders

Dd says I no longer look like Rudolph!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/10/2016 07:54

Wow, Lyclear is cheap!
I wonder if a normal high street pharmacy would have it.

wigglybeezer · 04/10/2016 09:29

I have just ordered some from super drug.

browneyesblue · 04/10/2016 10:10

I bought mine from a small chemist in a village. It's the tube of cream, not the shampoo. I would have loved to try Soolantra, so I was glad there was an alternative for me to try.

steffibabes · 05/10/2016 15:59

Went to the GP, she'd never heard of Soolantra. She prescribed antibiotics which I'd never been offered before. She says she's going to talk to the dermatologist about Soolantra. Hope the ABs work!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/10/2016 16:10

Very interesting. I don't find the other topical creams too good (metrogel is particularly useless as it seems to be physically incompatible with sunscreen or makeup), so I've been getting a course of lymecycline antibiotic when it gets too bad, that damps things down for a while. Beginning to rear its ugly head again so when I get to the point of heading to the GP I'll ask about this - I don't really like taking oral ABs, seems like the wrong thing to be doing really for a skin thing.

Thanks Jmangel ! Thanks

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/10/2016 16:17

Well, I bought a tube of Lyclear yesterday and will keep you posted.
I have had antibiotics in the past and they worked but like the previous poster I am not keen. I would have them again as a last resort but would rather find another way.
There was also a special kind of antibiotic, can't remember the name, which iirc had been denatured in some way, and cost a lot more than the normal ones, but it worked less well than the bog standard ones.

I just wanted to bump this thread in case anyone out there is thinking about trying Soolantra for their rosacea. Having read this thread I contacted OP who was able to tell me that the treatment was continuing to work for her. (Thank you so much OP) I managed to get a prescription for Soolantra and have been using the cream for 10 days. Oh my goodness the difference is AMAZING! My skin was at an all time low, red and bumpy, so uncomfortable, and I was wearing so much makeup just to try and cover it. 10 days in, my skin is still red but the bumps and spots have almost gone. My skin has not felt this smooth in years.
Yes it is gross that mites have been causing my rosacea for more than 10 years but I am just so relieved to have finally found a treatment that works! (I am going to confess that as i apply the cream at night I mutter 'die you bastard mites, get off my face'!!!!)
I would not have even heard of Soolantra if it hadn't been for this thread and so I thought it was worth sharing as the misery of rosacea is awful.

RandomDent · 20/12/2016 08:20

That's great news. I had it for a few years till I had a nasty gum infection. I had two rounds of metrodazinole and some other antibiotic from the dentist for a fortnight, and it also cleared my skin up completely!

EBearhug · 20/12/2016 08:23

I have been eagerly awaiting reports on ivermectin (which I was familiar with from keeping poultry!)

Yes, I remember it from growing up on a cattle farm!

PosiePootlePerkins · 20/12/2016 08:55

Unfortunately I can't have the oral antiobiotics as I had a severe reaction to them in my late teens. And would rather use a topical cream anyway, but have never found any to be effective until now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/12/2016 08:58

I can report now that Lyclear doesn't work. I think I might get myself to the gp after Christmas to ask for Soolantra.

PosiePootlePerkins · 20/12/2016 08:59

I would definitely recommend it Countess, good luck

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/12/2016 08:59

Sorry, I should have said doesn’t work for me - obviously it does for others.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/12/2016 09:00

Thanks Posie, it's great to hear it worked so well for you!

PosiePootlePerkins · 20/12/2016 09:01

Thanks Countess such a relief!

Nearlyadoctor · 20/12/2016 10:33

Glad to hear Soolantra is working for so many, I've been using it for 6 months now and it's been amazing. I also had laser 2 weeks ago for the flushing symptoms which seems to have had a good effect, according to my colleague its optimum results will be seen at 6 weeks and then I can decide whether or not a second treatment would be worth having.

PosiePootlePerkins · 20/12/2016 12:00

Nearlyadoctor that is wonderful! Great to hear it is still working for you. I guess its an ongoing treatment in that you need to keep using it to keep the mites at bay?
Unless you've lived with rosacea it is hard to understand the impact it can have on your confidence. I don't have flushing as such, just more of a permanently red complexion. I can live with that, I use Estee Lauder doublewear maximum cover canon makeup which covers the red brilliantly. But the bumps and spots are just awful when I have a flare up. I have always said that my skin feels like its crawling, now I know why! Blurgh.

Nearlyadoctor · 20/12/2016 15:59

Posie don't lose heart if you get a couple of flare ups normally at about 8 weeks and again 16-18 weeks. Soolantra can be used indefinitely if need be, and actually i find its quite enough without needing to use a moisturiser at night.

PosiePootlePerkins · 20/12/2016 19:27

Thank you I will definitely bare that in mind, good to know about the moisturiser as I usually tend to only apply it in the morning before I put on my makeup.

cardoon · 20/12/2016 23:19

Does it say what strength of Ivermectin is in the Soolantro?

JanetStWalker · 20/12/2016 23:24

Good news, thanks for letting us know. I'll stash that info away for my next flare up.

Kennington · 20/12/2016 23:31

Because they are mites do you have to dump your pillow and mattress so you don't keep getting affected by it? Am guessing the mites are in lots of places.
Interesting thread.
