How to wear a jumper dress?

poppym12 · 23/09/2016 10:09

I ordered long jumper/tunic thinking I'd wear it to cover my fat ass in jeans. The jumper has arrived. It's huge. Knee length. It's lovely and soft (without wool as I have a major sleep type allergy) but is it wearable? If so, how?

Leggings or thick tights in a matching or totally contrasting shade (you can get some LOVELY tights these days);

2kids2dogsnosense · 01/10/2016 08:12

Purple
I'm wearing tights now. I haven't been arrested by the fashion police yet

You fool - now they can find out where you live Shock Shock Shock

StrawberrytallCake · 01/10/2016 10:05

Don't panic 2kids if they find her now she's safe, it is the 1st October - officially the start of tights season Grin

FYI - just bought some lovely opaque wolfords on House of Fraser for £12

StrictlyJiving · 01/10/2016 10:26

I'd always thought jumper dresses were a no go if you don't have a washboard tummy as it emphasises it more. Am I wrong?

Floisme · 01/10/2016 10:35

If it's cold enough to be wearing a jumper dress, surely it's also cold enough for tights?

Anyway that looks really nice. I find knee length is a lot more flattering on me than thigh length, which makes my legs look really chunky. I'd just wear it as it is, with opaques and ankle boots. If you're wearing with boots (so no ankle gap visible), I don't think it makes much difference whether they're tights or leggings.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/10/2016 12:11

"I'd always thought jumper dresses were a no go if you don't have a washboard tummy as it emphasises it more. Am I wrong?"

Yes, they're not usually clingy.

Lweji · 01/10/2016 15:13

Unless you buy them one or two sizes too small (then start a thread about vanity sizing - how you're really a 10 and fit in a size 8 Hmm). I've seen someone wearing a jumper dress that I also have, but hers was in the wrong size, and it's not pretty.

StrictlyJiving · 01/10/2016 15:51

Most of the jumper dresses I've seen and had in the past, all seem to be figure hugging. I can't say I've seen baggy ones, but I'll look out now. (I love the new look one by the way) Nothing I love more than a big jumper to feel snug in. I wore jumper dresses last pre kids as when I wear them now, the side look does not look pretty iyswim.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/10/2016 23:23

Are some people maybe confusing jersey dresses with jumper dresses? My jumper dresses are just like long jumpers, so not tight/clingy.

DeadGood · 01/10/2016 23:35

I find it surprising that so many people are recommending knee length boots. They really aren't in fashion at the moment and look a bit... Yawn with knitted dresses.

Chunky heels or enclosed flats much better imo and much more up to date

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/10/2016 23:55

I have my red fine knit jumper dress and some rather cute lace up black ankle boots (bit Edwardian hooker looking ) .
That would be okay with black opaques wouldn;t it?

Gwenhwyfar · 02/10/2016 02:23

Style is not about being a fashion victim. Ankle boots with skirts and dresses look silly to me.

Lweji · 02/10/2016 08:39

Of course they are not in fashion, Summer has just ended.

But Winter is coming...

rightknockered · 02/10/2016 09:57

I have a burgundy knitted dress, I could wear it with black ankle boots and black opaques, but what if I were to wear tan suede ankle boots? Would black tights be ok?

LardLizard · 02/10/2016 12:51

I love jumoer dresses thick I tights and boots

Best part of winter for me
Well apart from Xmas of course

RedSauceAndJellyJuice · 02/10/2016 13:38

id wear it with black wedge boots

DeadGood · 03/10/2016 08:24

Gwenhyfar sorry didn't mean to sound nasty. I take your point about style being different to fashion - do think there's a difference between being fashionable and being a fashion victim though.

I didn't mention ankle boots.

Lweji I don't mean in fashion as in the Spring Summer season that just passed - I mean in a broader sense - knee high boots aren't on my radar at all at the moment, I don't see them around and haven't for ages. Bit like the way the photo of the OPs dress was styled with converse, knee highs aren't really used for styling or in magazines cause they're not really in at the moment

I do live in the South though so it doesn't get so cold here. Maybe that's why.

SpringSpringSpring · 03/10/2016 09:15

I was about to buy that dress as it does look soft and lovely for autumn but just seen that New Look charge for click&collect which is Ryanair levels of cheekiness!

notagiraffe · 03/10/2016 09:17

Poppy - that jumper dress is gorgeous. Get some thick plain tights or leggings and some knee length boots. Wear a mid-calf slip under it to streamline the outline. Maybe a scarf or a chunky belt or chunky pendant to go with it. It will look lovely. I'm tempted, and I'm massive!

notagiraffe · 03/10/2016 09:20

On ankle boots v knee highs, I'd always go for knee highs if your calves are chunky. There's nothing more likely to make those of us with stocky legs feel stumpy and dumpy than a pair of ankle boots that shortens the leg length even more.

poppym12 · 03/10/2016 10:41

I still haven't worn it as I feel strangely naked and exposed in anything other than jeans. What a sad state I've let myself get to. It is loose fitting, as I said earlier on in the threat when asked about sizing, but I like it as it's different to the clingy stuff I see around that just isn't me.

Dark grey non-marl footless tights - I have some from M&S (couple of years old) - they may have been sold as leggings or thermal somethings, but they are definitely tights (you wouldn't wear without covering your bum!)

Also I've got some more 'legging' type ones from Sainsburys (again, a couple of years old)

LtGreggs · 03/10/2016 11:32

I'm in Scotland - knee high boots are very practical and very much worn up here. Cracked mine out again last week :-)

leccybill · 03/10/2016 11:38

I love jumper dresses, I've got loads.
120 denier opaques from Primark are the business.

DeadGood · 03/10/2016 12:57

poppy maybe wear it around the house or to the shops to get used to wearing it? It's so easy to get into a "habit" with clothes, but also v easy to break that habit! Good luck, it'll be fab!
