For the past few years I have been searching for the perfect tan leather cross body bag. Not too hard or structured, nice soft leather, no obvious branding, not too many details/too much hardware but not too plain either...I'm not asking much am I?!! I tend to be drawn towards Madewell (although not at the moment, all too structured), Fossil, J. Crew, Anthropologie, M&S men's dept and Kooba but nothing is floating my boat right now, so tell me, lovely stylish Mumsnetters, what brands have I overlooked? Budget not particularly important but I'd rather spend £150 than £600!

I have some lovely crossbody bags from Jones the Bookmaker - not keen on their current selection, but they are worth a look. Also, try the men's bags by John Lewis.

Scaramanga. Beautiful handmade bags. Sign up for regular codes. Based in Scotland. I have this one in Black and Tan. Sure they have something you will love.

Yoshi have some lovely leather bags.

auldfuckingspinster · 17/09/2016 13:48

I've got a lovely brown Rowallan bag, they sometimes have them in TK Maxx.

Brillenbar · 17/09/2016 14:09

I second tusting. I have 2, one black tote which I have had for 2 years and have used every day for about 18 months and it still looks brand new, and because that was such a success, a tan tote, which I have used daily since the spring and it is still looking brand new. The quality is truly exceptional makes you realise that what passes elsewhere is not worth it. I am sure that if it were a brand with a following, like mulberry, the would be 5-10 times the price

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 17/09/2016 15:58

Liebeskind?

OCSockOrphanage · 17/09/2016 16:00

Village England make nice bags, and still have some in their sale.

Tambaboy · 17/09/2016 16:11

I absolutely love Yoshi, Francesco Biasia and Coccinelli.

MaybeDoctor · 17/09/2016 16:19

Marking place, as I am in the market for a new bag.

maggiethemagpie · 17/09/2016 21:29

I just got a leather cross body bag from Jones Bootmaker

Here are some in the range, prices are reasonable. www.jonesbootmaker.com/bags

Haven't used it yet so can't comment on quality but it seems nice enough

Nearlyadoctor · 17/09/2016 22:11

Osprey - lovely leather and they normally have a sale bit on their website.

SleepFreeZone · 17/09/2016 22:13

MrsHam13 · 17/09/2016 22:17

Blackcurrantvodka · 17/09/2016 23:03

Thanks everyone for your ideas, I'm now thinking I need a slightly smarter option and a casual bag too Grin I've had a lovely evening browsing through brands I'd never heard of/forgotten about/didn't think would have anything I liked (who knew White Stuff did nice bags?!) So here's my long shortlist if anyone else is looking...

Mimiberry Peggy in tan £322

Coach Saddle Bag 23 £375

Jones Bootmaker Aubery £65

Tusting Cardington £245

White Stuff Jasmine £69.95

Boden Mini Saddle Bag £149

Not on the high street Leather Hobo Tote £115

Maison Margiela 11 tan bag £415

I'm going to sleep on it...

That Coach one is beautiful, and I also have the Boden Mini on my shortlist.

Blackcurrantvodka · 18/09/2016 21:06

I love the Boden mini but I've just looked at the contents of my current bag (old rucksack being used as a changing bag/toddler crap accumulator) and I don't know if it'd fit my phone, wallet, glasses case and hairbrush... The bigger Boden saddle bag looks huge on the model though (to be fair she's tiny and I'm a curvy size 14...on a good day...wearing head to toe Spanx...after 2 weeks of no carbs...)

I recently bought the white stuff jasmine and I love it! It's lovely and slouchy once you start using it, not structured as it looks on the pictures.

Northernpowerhouse · 18/09/2016 22:34

I have just been looking at the Paul Costello bags as suggested by a PP. The reductions in their sale section are unbelievable. Are they legit? Particularly like the Signage tote in red but £225 down to £69.99 seems to good to be true. Can you tell I have a suspicious nature? Even in pursuit of a fabulous bag!

airedailleurs · 19/09/2016 12:43

more food for thought maybe,? Again from a surprising source!

M&S tan

or this:

rust

airedailleurs · 19/09/2016 12:45

and the Paul Costelloe bags are also available at TKMaxx for £69.00 (sad bag addict here, I know too much!)

Paul Costelloe

LaCerbiatta · 19/09/2016 12:48

Massimo Dutti have lovely bags.

Rumtopf · 20/09/2016 06:38

Northernpowerhouse, yes the reductions are that good at Paul Costelloe. I'd been coveting a bag for ages as that's where dh goes to buy his suits, the chap in there is outstanding at his job and while I was waiting for dh he saw me perusing this particular bag. He put it to one side for me (without my knowledge) so when I went back to collect dh's new suits after tailoring the bag had dropped into the sale from £250 to £80. I was so pleased!

GhostsComeWith · 20/09/2016 18:29

I just bought the boden maxi saddle & absolutely adore it. It is the perfect size. I had been worried it might be get be too big but it's not. Noa noa have nice leather bags too. I am coveting the brown leather shopper style one now
