Is expensive shampoo/conditioner a con?

So my hairdresser recommended Tigi products for my hair... which is fine, I know that they are trying to make a living. My hair does feel nice (but then it always does when I come out of the hairdressers!)

But is there actually any need to spend £10+ on shampoo or conditioner?

I need some convincing.

I use this. Its for coloured hair and it is fab. Big 1litre bottles. Expensive but worth it. It keeps the colour and my hair is really soft

Wella Professionals

I love Kerastase but so expensive - I only get the conditioners / hair masks now if treating myself. (Used to get them as gifts from friend who worked for L'Oreal and got massive discounts, but sadly they moved jobs).

Have used Phyto shampoos before which smelt lovely, and left my hair lovely, but can't justify the price any more.

Going to try Holland & Barratt now after previous posts and see if they make a difference. Usually just use Aussie, but find its a bit heavy, and smell is overpowering. Or Pantene / treseme which leave a residue. Tend to alternate quite a bit.

BettyCrystal · 16/09/2016 15:39

Depends on how easy your hair is. If high maintenance then it's probably worth the spend.
Mine's wash & go, I don't even condition. So pound shop stuff for me. I'll treat myself to a nice big bottle from the sulphate-free / natural ranges at TK Maxx when I find a nice one.
But I do have friends who are very fussy about their problem hair & the top products do work for them.
Having said that, sometimes less is more...

moonbells · 16/09/2016 16:00

I did a trial of Aveda Invati on here once, for thinning hair. I have always belonged in the scoffers corner when it comes to hair products so signed up thinking it'd never work but...

It did. I've never been so astonished.

I now treat myself to a big tube of conditioner every few months and ration it for the weeks I need extra bounce or I'm wearing my hair down. If you find an expensive shampoo/conditioner that works for you, it's worth it. It's finding one that works which is the trick!

I totally fried my hair last year by over bleaching. My friend (who is also a hairdresser of many years' experience) recommended trying the Sebastian Hydre range. I've been using it for nearly a year now and can really notice the difference. I buy the 1000ml bottles and they last for months.

Preservatives need to be part of the ingrediants in any hair shampoo - if they aren't bacteria and fungus would grow super fast.
I like Jason and other non sls shampoos but none of these are expensive. Most surfactants are really cheap.

RavioliOnToast · 16/09/2016 19:55

I love osmo Berber oil range. Not too pricey either. But I adore tigi elasticise! Worth every penny imo.

sonlypuppyfat · 16/09/2016 20:00

Alberto balsam is brilliant and it's only a pound, DD has long natural blond hair and it's bloody lovely really shiny

EnidButton · 16/09/2016 20:07

Depends what your hair needs. I'm not that bothered about expensive shampoos but expensive conditioners have always been much more effective.

That said, I wasn't that impressed by Keratase but it's possible I chose the wrong range. I love PK elasticizer. Currently eyeing up the Redken range but not heard much about it before outside hair salons. Anyone used Redken stuff and liked it?

EnidButton · 16/09/2016 20:10

Meant to say, the Garnier Ultimate Blends shampoos and conditioners have been the best budget end ones that I've tried. Really good for the price actually. My hair is long, thick, slightly wavy when left, prone to dry ends and I like the Argan oil ones.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 16/09/2016 20:50

No. once you find products and a routine that work for you, more expensive stuff is a con. It's all the same ingredients.

I'm talking about ones at the Tigi price point, I'd spend up to about £7 on a decent shampoo and conditioner because I only use sulfate and silicone free, but at the moment I'm using a 99p conditioner from Wilkos and the most basic 25p gel from Tesco. Honestly, my curls have never looked better - and no bad hair days!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 16/09/2016 20:54

I really think it depends on your hair. My hair has taken a lot of abuse over the years and at times I needed more expensive products but at other times I have been fine with cheap stuff.

Due to extreme budget restrictions at the moment I have been using the 35p Aldi shampoo and conditioner and it's honestly fine. Similar to most cheap brand ranges that cost a couple of pounds. My hair is a shiny and tangle free so I'm happy.

Pupsiecola · 16/09/2016 22:01

I have a lot of hair and it's wavy and naturally quite coarse. It's also coloured plus I have sensitive skin/scalp. I kicked the Kerastase habit a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. I use Pureology now and my hair is in much better "real" condition (rather than Kerastase-induced fake condition).

Anerak · 16/09/2016 22:08

You need to find the right shampoo for your hair type which might be cheap but could well be expensive. I used to love pantene brunette expressions but it's discontinued and nothing does it quite like it. More important than the shampoo and conditioner is how you wash your hair - making sure all shampoo and conditioner thoroughly washed out, gentle brushing when hair is wet, as little heat as possible, not dying it, regularly cuttong dead ends... Sadly no shortcuts to long term care

EnidButton · 16/09/2016 22:35

Wide tooth comb on wet hair. Never a brush. I use a wide tooth comb at all times now.

Pupsiecola · 16/09/2016 22:50

Oh yes. I comb my conditioner through in the shower with a wide tooth comb and leave it in whilst washing the rest of me.

AndieNZ · 16/09/2016 22:55

I'm not sure about Tigi products but for me, using high end products like Redken and Kerastase is definately worth the money.

I've started using the Redken range. Normally I don't bother buying the expensive shampoo and everyday conditioner, I normally just buy an expensive masque or treatment and use a cheap shampoo.
But a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try buying the Redken Shampoo and everyday conditioner. The results are amazing and you can definately tell I am using a high end product. I also find I don't need to use as much.

bingohandjob · 17/09/2016 00:43

I use Joico Color Endure and got my last lot from eBay - £20 for 500ml each of shampoo and conditioner. Often available in TK Maxx too. I really do think it makes a difference to longevity of my blond highlights. I've got fine shoulder length hair (washed it Thursday and it feels all bouncy and silky).

Eolian · 17/09/2016 00:48

I have very fine, very straight hair. I've tried all manner of expensive shampoos and conditioners, mid-range ones and cheap ones. The super-cheap (e.g. Aldi non-branded) make my hair look a bit worse but I don't really see any difference between the cheapish, medium and expensive tbh. My hair looks better coming out of the salon because they are good at blow-drying it and because they put styling products on that I can't be bothered with, not because they use different shampoos imo.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/09/2016 00:57

I have a 1 litre of Aveda Clove at the moment, lasts for ages partly because of the pump, I only need half a pump rather than trying to squeeze out of a bottle.

DH and I use Aveda Shampure too (a bottle can last us a year) it's more conditioning than the clove, but I have hennaed hair so I like the colour boost.

TroubleinDaFamily · 17/09/2016 00:59

Nioxin £25 a litre, too lazy to do the maths, but probably not too spenny in the long run.

Generally lasts me a year, or it did before the 15 year old started using it.

That is a 15 year old boy BTW.Hmm

FrustratedFrugal · 17/09/2016 05:43

It is a bit of a con - see an expert's views here. Straight, fine hair here, and supermarket shampoo generally works better for me than the expensive ones my hairdresser recommends.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 17/09/2016 06:10

I was using the Holland and Barrett organic range, that wasn't a couple of quid btw £5.59. My hair seemed to start going lank though. I've started using Palmer's coconut oil shampoo/conditioner good so far, around £3/4 for large bottle, shampoo smells gorgeous.

ihatethecold · 18/09/2016 10:26

CAn anyone recommend a shampoo for greasy teenage hair?
My Dd 13 has very greasy roots. Obviously caused by puberty. When she blow drys it it still look wet at the crown.
I bought her the elvive shampoo and conditioner for greasy hair with dry ends but it's pretty rubbish.
I don't mind spending a bit more to get one that works.

DonkeyHotay · 18/09/2016 10:44

I hate does your dad use conditioner? If so maybe she'd be better just using it at the very ends first and then using shampoo. If I let my hair dry naturally, it is greasy within the same day. I now blow dry and straighten it at night. I put mousse on to style and use dry shampoo at the roots straight away. If I wear it up, I can go at least 3 days between washing. My hair is fine and colored, it is in very good condition though.
