I've found a dress I like, kinda ... can anyone find one similar?

I tried on this dress this morning, and liked it. Only a) I don't love the colours, would rather bluey purply and b) it's a bit low-cut by my lights. I do love the style, the cut, the empire-waist thing, and the pattern (e.g. pucciesque). Oh, and the fabric is nice, too.

Anyone know of anything similar? High street probably simplest.

I hate shopping, and don't actually own any reasonably casual dresses I can stand, so finding something I liked was quite nice.

(I have a black tie do and a wedding coming up this spring, so will no doubt be on this bit of MN more in the near future. )

look in top shop

Soapbox · 03/02/2007 12:15

this one?

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:15

What size does Top Shop go up to? I think I'm a 16, although I tried the dress in a 14, and it was fine.

(I used to buy clothes when I worked, but I was an 18 then, and I think Top Shop just didn't go that big at all ...)

Soapy, too beige. I am tempted by the black and white dress (didn't see it in shop), but beige is a colour I generally avoid. (very pale skin, very dark brown hair with grey in. Pale neutrals don't suit, I don't think)

i like this one!

Chocolate number

\link{http://www.principles.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=3310\similar shape, different pattern

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:21

Hmm, was just looking at that one at Top Shop site. Their stuff is a lot younger looking, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Are the skirts mid-thigh length? I'd like just above the knee at least, I think.

The Principles ones have higher necklines, and a nice cut, but the prints are a bit Queen Mum to my eye.

similar shape, different pattern

itsmeNDP · 03/02/2007 12:23

NQC, I know what you mean. I'm just looking for similar cuts

itsmeNDP · 03/02/2007 12:24

Fab pattern, but different shape and looks short

Kbear · 03/02/2007 12:24

I love these patterned dresses (although the orange one is a bit too much for me!). You can't help but look great in them I think, not just cut for the size 10s! yay

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:27

Yeah, I like the Warehouse pattern and cut, but it wouldn't suit me as well. I really should buy a dress this season, if empire waist is in (or at least available), as anything but empire waist really doesn't suit me.

(DS1 thought the original Wallis dress suited me really well. He was very sweet. )

You know, I could probably spend a reasonable amount on a dress if I found one I really liked. What options are there beyond high street? Would Boden do something like this? I keep throwing out the catalogs. (Along with the risibly expensive Wrap or whatever the hell it's called ones that keep coming ever since I bought one Boden thing).

OP posts:
itsmeNDP · 03/02/2007 12:28

I think Boden dresses are hugely mumsy

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:29

Looks like Boden are mostly doing wrap (I really don't have the norks for that), or shirtdresses (makes me look like a bus).

short and budget busting!

JackieNo · 03/02/2007 12:41

Hmmm - not quite the same, but do you like this one ?

itsmeNDP · 03/02/2007 12:43

God, that is gross, Jackie ! m&s photography really is dire

JackieNo · 03/02/2007 12:44

I really hate M&S's pics of their trousers on the website - they're always far too short, and so look extremely unflattering, even if they're OK in rl.

southeastastra · 03/02/2007 12:46

this one? though not really empire

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:50

That Net a Porter one is a bit scary. And beaded trim ... no, not so much.

The M+S one looks ok, well, it might look ok on someone who didn't have a broken spine, or whatever the heck is wrong with that model. I love polka dots, although more white ones on a black background.

The Monsoon print is beautiful. But sleeveless not so much my thing. (Arms good, but don't generally shave pits, so it doesn't quite work. ) Hmmm, could be tempted to shave for evening do or wedding coming up ...

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:50

I'd describe the monsoon one as empire, I mean, the line isn't horizontal, but it's definately under-boob.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 03/02/2007 12:51

Is this a bit too short? Can't really tell enough about the detail from the pic.

Or this , or along the same lines, this ?

southeastastra · 03/02/2007 12:52

they only have the monsoon one in size 8! blimey who is a size 8. they may have more sizes in the shops.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2007 12:56

Oooh, all those look nice JackieNo. And none are pricy! The Japanesey prints are very tempting. I'll have to work out sizing on them, but they definately look doable.

I think all those are knee-length, but I can do knee-length, I just can't do mid-thigh, I don't think.
