I think it's all bollocks - all these expensive creams. They never do anything. Just clever marketing imo.

Blandmum · 24/01/2007 12:11

Vitamin E is only present in skin creams to stop the cream going rancid!

Retinol works (I used to work for the company that made it as a treatment for acne originally), but can be irritation for your skin, it works 'best' if your skin is darker and more oily.

All the rest is bullshit. Skin is a 1 war barrier for most things.

Eat vitamins, but dont expect them to do anything in a skin preparation.

puddle yes i think so. vivienne parry wrote a book about hormones and I remember her on woman's hour talking about testosterone surging in your 40s (as if you don't have enough problems ) and causing spots.

never been tempted by creme de la mer, can't see the point.

enid - really?

Marina · 24/01/2007 12:13

Can't listen to podcasts at work cod!

foxinsocks · 24/01/2007 12:13

can believe that about retinol (one of my sis had it on prescription for acne - the retin A or whatever it was and that definitley did something to your skin) but everthing else is rubbish.

I'm sure it's mainly genetic innit - and whether you're a big boozer.

MegaLegs · 24/01/2007 12:13

I am tempted by C de la M but would have to go down to London for it. Dh has offered to pick it up but theres no way I'd let him. I'd have to be able to smell it and ask all about it myself before I blew that much money on it!

bundle · 24/01/2007 12:15

enid - really botox?

(glad your skin thing cleared up btw, i remember how distressing it was for you)

retin a deffo works....I've seen oodles of real scientific studies.

What it works on really is tha aging caused by sun damage, it doesn't do so much on the chronalogical wrinkles.

Once you have used it you should stay out of the sun, because it can cause you to become v sensitive.

If you want to check out how aging the sun is look at each surface of your arms. Whic looks older? They bit that 'sees' the sun. But all the skin on your arm is the same age!

Stay out of the sun
Don't smoke
Pick your grandparents carefully

hoxtonchick · 24/01/2007 12:16

am catching up with both of you, bundle & marina .

sunscreen's the most important though isn't it? and not smoking & drinking....

Lazycow · 24/01/2007 12:19

I read a really good article in a magazien once (probably the only beauty artile I've ever found interesting)

A plastic surgeon wrote it and listes all the things that could be dealt with without surgery and what needed surgery etc if you wanted real improvement.

He said that after the age of 30 or so a good skin regime would make a difference to fine lines and wrinkles.

He said you need to

Cleanse wash the skin well (non soap cleanser or even mild soap like dove is fine) - Rinse with warm water, Then lather again and rince with cold water to close up pores.

Then use a good quality retin a (on prescription) or retinol (over the counter) product. Get one that is as expensive as you can afford. Use that.

Then use a good quality moisturiser with sunscreen or (either a combined one or put the moisturiser on followed by the sunscreen)

That is it. He did say the retinol is quite strong and some people have a sensitive reaction to it but if you are OK with it use it as it really does make a difference to wrinkles if used regularly

bundle · 24/01/2007 12:20

yes dermatologist told me: best things for keeping skin looking young: large hat (in sun) and candlelight (flattering) - though obviously not both too close together...

Blandmum · 24/01/2007 12:24

The single biggest thing is to stay out of the sun.

The product manager for Retin A would e-mail us daily with the sun index and tell us what level of sun screen we needed that day!

Retin A only really works well on the wrinkles caused by sun damage. And once you use it, staying out of the sun is more of an issue.

It sensitises people with fair skin more than dark skin, you should never over use it in the hopes that more cream will give you a bigger effect, you will end up with a very red , sore face, like this . Fair skinned people should used less concentrated cream preparations, darker skinned people can get away with stronger gel preparations.

I was the medical Info officer for Retin A

Tutter · 24/01/2007 12:25

i suppose it being the bbc they didn't talk about any specific brands cod?

enid - interesting re eve lom. dh got me some for christmas and my skin has been shocking since then. but then i am pg and maybe it would have been shocking anyway. or maybe it would have been even worse...? who bleedin knows

smoking not just bad for skin on outside, it also affects elasticity on inside (eg more prone to hernias because tissues don't give so much)
