How much did you spend on your wedding dress? Any regrets?

As the title says.

I ask because this is my dream dress:

annacampbell.worldsecuresystems.com/dresses/spirit/madison-silk-tulle

The wedding is going to be a boho sort of ceremony abroad and I just love this dress. I am not sure I want to be spending nearly two grand on the dress though as that is the same price as the wedding package!

Did you spend a lot and find it was absolutely worth it? Or more importantly, did you spend a minimal amount on the dress and feel amazing?

Any links to cheaper alternatives for a boho kind of feel would be great. I am a size 8-10 but I have a mum tum so skin tight would not be great. Temperature is going to be about 30 so not even sure on what fabric I should be going for. Help?

I made it myself and the cost of all the fabrics, trimmings, boning etc was about £90.

Terrifiedandregretful · 19/06/2016 19:43

I spent £975. I ended up not getting married but I still can't bring myself to regret it because I loved it so much. My budget was £1000 so it just snuck in there. Now I need to psyche myself up to sell it...

Ilovenannyplum · 19/06/2016 19:48

£799 reduced from £1500 plus additional for alterations

Still can't get my head around the fact I could buy a car for that but it is beautiful and I can't wait to wear it in December when I get married Grin

MrsMarsch · 19/06/2016 20:10

I'm getting married in 4 weeks and my dress was £495 (plus alterations)

DerelictMyBalls · 19/06/2016 21:11

£55. Sorry to blow my own trumpet but I looked like a total fox in it! Grin

naichick · 19/06/2016 23:56

Beautiful dress Op. I spent £150 on my provonias dress as it was an ex sample, it was 10% of the original price and was beautiful!

LadyAntonella · 20/06/2016 07:54

Just another bargain dress story to share with you OP; one of my best friends had a giant budget for her dress but went to a designer store and found a dress she liked. She ended up getting one that had been used for catwalk shows and photo shoots. As she was quite slim (like yourself - I'm Irish so allowed to say "yourself" instead of you), the dress for her pretty well already, but the designer did alter it a bit for her for free! It was a lovely dress. Long and white but not typically weddingy. Might be worth a scout about for dresses previously worn by models as I think you might find some in your size.

My dress cost €1050 but i managed to get it reduced to €500 on the provision I bought both bridesmaids dresses and had all the alterations done in the same place.

It is a family run bridal shop so they are a lot more flexible with price. Veil cost €200 though as it is handmade by one of the store owners.

worrierandwine · 20/06/2016 08:49

My wedding dress was £400 in 2005. It's an Augusta Jones designer one from a bridal warehouse sale in Grantham and I loved it. Maybe try a bridal warehouse sale? I was always cautious of getting caught up in the "one dress" scenario and rather prefer to focus on the style. It is a lovely dress but if you're feeling like it would be too extravagant I'm sure you could find one boho style but not so expensive.

Katedotness1963 · 20/06/2016 17:28

I think it was £60 for the dress and alterations. We did the whole thing on the cheap, a huge wedding was not important to us.

KitKat1985 · 20/06/2016 17:28

Mine was £795, plus I spent a bit more on veil, tiara and alterations, so probably about £900 in total. I do love it and it fitted really well, but I do sometimes think that it was a lot of money to spend on a dress which I can only wear once. Also it's in my wardrobe and I don't honestly know what to do with it now as it takes up a lot of space (large train) but I can't bear to part with it.

Janeymoo50 · 20/06/2016 17:30

£340 from Monsoon this year. It was lovely.

RubbishG3nericUsername · 20/06/2016 17:37

I spent nearly 3k including alterations, accessories etc. Still feel guilty and slightly regretful nearly 2 years on (and I got to wear it twice!)

BalloonSlayer · 20/06/2016 17:40

Lovely dress but it makes the model's boobs look low and droopy.

For two grand I'd expect to have a fabulous bustline, not a matronly bosom like our own dear Queen.

doublehelpings · 20/06/2016 17:41

I'm not sure if this has been said or answered already but I think you should be spending around 10% of your total budget on the dress. Obviously if you're making savings in other areas you can splurge a bit more.

Dress looks lovely but you need to try it on. I didn't like many of the ones I'd seen in magazines once I'd tried them on. You need to try a range of different styles I think. You may be surprised with what you end up liking and going for. Good luck!

potatomama · 20/06/2016 17:45

£30 from H&M! We had a very casual wedding ;)

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 20/06/2016 17:48

great story about wedding dress

The above is a great old listen! The whole wedding dress ritual.

In short, if it will make your day and you love it and you can afford it, get it.

If not - sure you'd find something else that you'd look great in that doesn't cost so much.

Have a great day!

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 20/06/2016 17:49

oh I was a £60 "nice dress from Monsoon" bride - I gave it to a friend afterwards. All good!

CaveMum · 20/06/2016 17:50

If you can afford it, get it!

I was told there are three things you should focus your budget on:

Dress
Photographer
Food

Everything else is peripheral.

WaitingForEgg · 20/06/2016 17:51

£2500, I adored my dress. I then sold it on to a woman who desperately wanted the style and couldn't afford it new. She paid me £1500 and it made me so happy that someone else would get joy from the dress, rather than it sit in a box all sad. She sent me a picture of her wearing it on her day, and then sold it on to another bride to wear in similar circumstances. Spend what you can afford

TwoLittleBlooms · 20/06/2016 17:55

That dress is gorgeous! If it is your dream dress and you can afford it then get it!

I spent £100 - a simple white gown from debenhams. I don't regret spending so little on it. What I do regret is I bought it in a hurry and looking back at the (very few and very bad) photo's, it didn't fit very well. I regret that I didn't buy the beautiful green knee length dress I had seen online in Monsoon.

ginauk84 · 20/06/2016 17:55

£350 for mine, I couldn't have spent any more for one day (used it two days as trashed it in the sea lol) I just think it could be spent on something else. Perhaps on the ring as that's always going to be worth money and you will wear it every day. Can you afford to spend the money and don't sit there and think you could have this that and the other with it? If so buy the dress but otherwise leave it as am sure you will look stunning in something cheaper.

I felt exactly the same, although my my dream dress was around £1200. I just couldn't justify the cost for one day not to mention the fact I'm terrible at keeping white clean!! So I research a lady on line called lacemary who will custom make any design! I sent her photos of the exact dress I wanted and instead of the £1200 price tag it's cost me just over £400! However I am not due to receive the dress until the end of July.... She has fab reviews and has been great with communication. She's also really honest interms of suggesting that I allow money in my budget for alterations as she's not taken my measurements. I don't suppose anyone else on here has any experience of ordering they're dress in this way or better still from lacemary?!?!

From a nervous but excited bride to be!!

Mitchell50 · 20/06/2016 18:01

I spent £2k on a dress which has a similar boho feel about it for our seaside wedding and I haven't regretted it. I feel like it is quite a timeless design and I'm hoping my dd might fancy wearing it.
What I do regret is not having enough time to have my hair done for the day because my MIL had a problem with fleas and I had to medicate my own mother to actually get her to the event...don't ask
The £2k was the least of my problems

WottyMcWottFace · 20/06/2016 18:09

My dream dress was 3k which I wasn't prepared to pay, I tried it on at the local bridal shop so I knew the size I needed. I made the MAJOR mistake of ordering a replica online on the same website shown on OP pic! It was £125 and was bloody awful! So I went onto the designers website of my dream dress and rang each stockist to see if they had a sample in my size and if they would sell it to me .... After a few days of emailing and ringing round I received a reply from a bridal boutique in USA who sold me their sample for £600 plus postage of £75. Still a fair amount of money but a smidge of what it should have cost and it was amazing!
It's your special day so make sure you get your special dress, il remember the feeling when I put mine on forever 💗
