What's the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

Not vintage just something you've had for years.
I have a jumper I had at school and it still has a name tape sewn - it's 23 years old and worn regularly. It's a plain red hand knitted cotton jumper.
I also have two navy blue t-shirts that I've had for at least 25 years - I wore one the first time I kissed a boy - they are just thick cotton but amazing quality and have a very flattering sleeve length and hold their shape. I wore one yesterday. No idea what brand they were.

I also chucked some socks two years ago that my mother and I had both worn regularly - I nicked them off her - she bought them in Argentina in 1978.

I have a fabulous black velvet 'goth' dress that my mum bought for me when I was 16 (1989) from Kensington Market to wear to a party.

It's hung in the wardrobe for years, until I wore it again a couple of years ago to a work Xmas party. It was fancy dress and I went as Morticia. I was dead chuffed to be able to still get into it!

I also have a sparkly red party dress I got in Miss Selfridges in the early 90's. I haven't worn it since my early 20's and it's far too young for me now, but it is so pretty I'm hoping my DD may like it when she is older Smile

I have a fleecy pajama top from M&S circa 1992, I wear it on rotation every winter, it's so snuggly and cosy, has been washed thousands of times, the pants are long gone, I remember catching and ripping them on the door of my childhood bedroom.
Quality was different back then, now a few washes and things start to look old.

My running hoodie is 20-odd years old.

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 18/06/2016 14:08

I have an oilily top that I got when I was 13, I'm now 38 so 25 years old!!

It was found when my parents divorced and I helped my mum empty the loft out.

How I loved that top ( though it was a bit coco the clown style with striped arms )

A pair of black patent ballet flats my mum brought me for our 6th form Christmas ball in 1988. Still worn for "dos". I hate heels.

A Buffalo windshirt (a outdoorsy niche brand cagoule) that I bought second hand in 1989, just before going to uni. It's been used probably on average once a week for the last 27 years, but often daily.

I don't need to keep things for more than a few seasons - either I go off it or I put on /lose weight or it wears out.

The oldest thing i have is, boringly, a pair of cotton pyjama bottoms which never seem to wear out and is 8 years old.

A pair of calf length boots that i bought from Ravel when it was very fashionable. They were so expensive. They are burgundy leather with a strip and kind of sporty looking. I have never been able to find them on ebay. They must have been bought in the 90's

My Levi's jacket from about 1985 is currently worn by my daughter. I have a wool jacket from Next bought around 1987 that is taking up space in my wardrobe, it was too big then and is still too big now - I actually have no idea why I'm keeping it!
My walking boots must be 30 years old and I wore my Ron Hill Tracksters when pregnant with my son who is 24, I still wear them to the gym.

thrillhouse · 19/06/2016 08:40

I have a couple of checked shirts from about 9 years ago, I don't wear them so much now (but I am 28 so my scope for having things a long time is a little limited!).

DH is the king of keeping things for a ridiculous amount of time. He has socks that I once bought him when we were 17. Socks! Who keeps socks that long?!

thrillhouse · 19/06/2016 08:42

My mum has a great big snuggly cardigan that she knitted herself in the late 80s/early 90s. She's had it as long as I can remember at least. Only wears it around the house. I used to like borrowing it when I was little.

I started knitting myself a big cardi last year with a view to having one of my own. I haven't finished it yet, knitting with a baby around is tricky!

Nursenat100 · 19/06/2016 08:56

The dress from my 18th birthday party. I'm about to turn 38....and it still fits (on a good day!). I still wear it, from kookai, plain and simple and stood the test of time

NameChanger22 · 19/06/2016 09:04

I have 5 wardrobe rails. One of those rails has lots of dresses which I wore 20 years ago, the oldest is probably 25 years old. None of them fit me anymore.

I've never been able to throw them out because I'm sentimental about clothes and they have nice memories attached to them. And, some of them were expensive. Plus, my daughter might want some lovely vintage dresses 6 years from now.

Athrawes · 19/06/2016 11:40

This week I will be wearing to a formal dinner a full length skirt my mum made for herself around the early 1960s.

LuluJakey1 · 19/06/2016 11:44

I have a really good quality honey coloured suede coat that was my mum's in the 1960s. I love it.

Muskey · 19/06/2016 11:49

At this precise moment the oldest thing in my wardrobe is my husband. The wardrobe door is broken and he is trying to fix it.

The oldest garment is an embroidered jacket I bought in the sales at Monsoon. It is about 25 years old and I still wear it

shatteredstudentmum · 19/06/2016 11:57

I have a long black jersey skirt I bought to go to university in 1992, worn it through 2 pgs and still wear it for school fairly regularly. It's still in really good condition and often gets positive comments.
