That leaves say 12 weeks you might wear them. Every year I fall for this.

The only thing that sways me is my room at work is ROASTING. If it were air conditioned I'd not bother

It's the opposite in our office. Freezing even on the hottest day. Cardigans all the way.

Though we've had a move while I've been off this week and I'm now in an office of 27 men and two women. In my experience the men always find it much warmer than me and will turn the aircon up full blast. I'll be wearing a scarf I expect.

Peppermintea · 04/06/2016 14:41

I just don't bother putting my coat on.

Naicecuppatea · 04/06/2016 15:50

I am of the same mind, there seems to be absolutely no point in being tempted to buy summer clothes unless going abroad. I laugh at all the summer clothing in the shops, it's grey and freezing outside and has been for the past however many days, who are they trying to kid! Autumn type clothes are the best to invest in - chinos, long sleeve tops and light knitwear. No cold arms or legs.

PhylumChordata · 04/06/2016 16:16

Was just thinking this. Ive bought one summer dress, on summer jacket and one t shirt this year and even that seems excessive when theres barely worn summer frocks in my wardrobe.

I get so bored of jeans and so excited to see summer stuff that I fall for it.

I'm buying nothing next year. Nothing.

PhylumChordata · 04/06/2016 16:18

Naice that is my usual philosophy -chinos, bretons, light jumpers but I do love me a summer frock.

coffeeaddictedandfat · 04/06/2016 16:26

I am with art. never get people who have summer AND winter clothes and get them out according.

I wear my dresses all year round. just add tights and cardigan/layers in cold weather. done Grin

Buttwing · 04/06/2016 19:13

I totally agree. I don't really like summer clothes anyway, I just buy a few tshirts and vests. I can't wait for all the lovely A/W stuff to arrive in the shops!

BlueEyedWonder · 04/06/2016 20:24

Given that we haven't taken a summer beach holiday abroad for some years now, my summer wardrobe is minimal.
This year we're holidaying in Scotland so I've no plans to buy anything else.
On the odd warmer days we have, I wear chinos or white jeans with
birkenstocks and a striped T or vest. If there is a week long heatwave along the way, I have ancient denim shorts and a cotton dress that are woefully under worn!
We're off to Barcelona in October and hoping the weather might be nice!

Judydreamsofhorses · 04/06/2016 21:10

I've bought a couple of midi-dresses which I'll wear with a denim jacket, bare legs and trainers, plus a pair of sandals (my last pair are from four years ago, they were so rarely worn!). I have a lot of blouses which I wear with skinny jeans, and in winter put a Uniqlo heat-tech top underneath, so those are year-round staples. Today I wore midi-dress/bare legs, yesterday it was opaques and Chelsea boots...

AdoraKiora · 04/06/2016 21:45

I've decided I'm going in...I'm wearing bare legs and dresses/skirts ALL this week to work. Fuck it Grin. Gotta get my money's worth.

JapaneseSlipper · 04/06/2016 21:51

I don't wear the same clothes all year round.

Spring/summer clothes, to me, should be colourful, have different prints, be made of different fabrics. I would not wear a sundress made of silk/cotton mix in autumn with tights underneath and a coat on top. I like the seasons to feel different from each other.

In winter, I wear black, grey, maroon, blue, navy, white. In autumn I may wear more oranges, reds and browns as well as the above. But I like wearing pretty, softer colours in spring, plus florals, and then in summer it's corals, bright blues, jewel colours, etc. But I live in the South so even though the weather's been fairly crap, it's not actually cold.

HerrenaHarridan · 04/06/2016 22:11

Ha!

I'm in Scotland and it's been roasting all week :)

I agree though about wearing summer dresses in winter with layers, I do have some that don't really work like that but on the whole bright and colourful all year

YaySirNaySir · 05/06/2016 00:53

I have bought a lovely dress today from topshop via the chazza shop £5. It's going to be useful in next weeks forecasted sunshine ( please) and will look fab with opaques in winter.

JaceLancs · 05/06/2016 01:57

Been very hot in the north west for last few weeks - glad I got my shorts and summer dresses out
Went out today in vest top and denim skirt and was too hot
Linen or shorts tomorrow for me!

JackandDiane · 05/06/2016 06:37

Hot to someone in the north west means over 15 degrees

Yes I rarely buy a lot for myself but often by the children quite a bit and so far I've got away with buying hardly anything for them too.

There will be some mega sales at the end of the season but no doubt more tales of woe from retailers who are about to go bust and blame it on the weather.

Statelychangers · 05/06/2016 07:44

I do enjoy wearing summer clothes - shorts, sandals and summer dresses, but I have enough of these, no need to update every year.

Tanaqui · 05/06/2016 07:47

Like Japan, I like summer and winter to feel different!

What I do is buy cheap stuff for summer, so it doesn't matter if it gets sun cream on or washed in a holiday washing machine, and then I don't mind much if it doesn't get worn a lot. I also stick to stuff I will wear for ages- white jeans, denim shorts, cotton skirts, and just change up tops and t shirts as they get knackered.

For work I get dresses, and quite a few can be layered with tights/long sleeves so they look like summer clothes without being freezing, and do for spring and autumn. The only problem I have with summer work clothes is shoes- need closed toe and hate ballet flats!

SpaghettiMeatballs · 05/06/2016 07:59

It's depressing how old some of my summer clothes are.

In fact, I have a denim skirt from O'Neil (remember them?) that I've just realised is 14 years old.

it was a hipster skirt that skimmed my fleshless hips and now I wear it on my waist

ToastMakesMeHappy · 05/06/2016 08:45

This is such an eye opener. I panic buy at the start of summer, I've gained a few lbs so feel uncomfortable in everything.
In reality I do what PPs have said and just roll jeans up a little and wear less layers. The rubbish I panic buy then goes in a drawer until next year - when I panic buy again. And repeat, every summer Hmm

Artandco · 05/06/2016 09:18

A new summer clothes wardrobe every year is madness.

Buy little but quality. I will wear some summer stuff and have as travel abroad a fair bit ( in Greece atm). But I still wear items I have had years and years and just buy the odd extra

This year I have a new beach dress/ kaftan, and some Birkenstocks ( old pair fell apart after 6 years). Everything else for a beach/ hot summer is still great.

Same with winter stuff tbh. I will buy a coat but expect it to last most my lifetime tbh. My favourite wool coat I wear to death every year. Bought 12+ years ago for about £200. It looks as new.

Basics like a simple but nice tshirt/ shirt/ dress in good fabrics like cotton or linen rather than polyester should last for a very long time as can be worn again and again in various ways. Plainer usually best. I have a navy dress that's great for that, just above knee, simple design. I can wear barefoot or in flip flops on beach with summer hat, or can dress up in evening with long necklaces, fancier shoes, belt maybe.

bakeoffcake · 05/06/2016 09:27

I do but a few things as I find my winter clothes look "wintery". I like some lightener coloured clothes for spring/summer. So whilst I wear mostly blues all year round, my summer blues are lighter.

Also scarves etc are completely different.

TwentyOneGuns · 05/06/2016 10:01

I agree with those who like their clothes to be different for summer and winter. Although my style remains much the same and some of my clothes do work year-round, I tend to wear lighter colours in summer and slightly more relaxed styles whereas I'm generally a bit smarter in the winter and wear richer, deeper colours. I wouldn't feel right wearing a 'summer' dress over a t-shirt in winter, the fabric and colours would just feel wrong!

It's obviously a nightmare with our rubbish weather but I'm stubborn about sticking to the seasons as much as I can so for example I've been in jeans and a sweatshirt this week because it's been so cold but worn with Converse not boots and a tan bag instead of a black one. Boots would probably have been more practical but I refuse to wear them at this time of year!

I've got a pretty good collection of summer stuff that I get out each year and add a few bits to, they last much longer than my winter clothes which get worn much more so need replacing regularly.

JackandDiane · 05/06/2016 12:27

Yup. I have a whole separate wardrobe houses in storage bags in the loft. And a tub of shoes. Get so excited
