How to avoid looking cheap in the summer.

What would be your main tips on how to look good during the summer?
Any particular colors, fabrics, styles (or brands) to avoid?
The How to Look Expensive threads were really interesting, but I find it's easier to look more together in the winter, but more of a problem in the summer.
I always end up looking like a bag of shit
Sometimes I 'get it right' but when I do, it's purely accidental Confused

Ahh...They are near to bare foot walking so I don't think they need to be supportive.

CotswoldStrife · 28/05/2016 23:47

I am pleased to hear that the effort I put into sanding exfoliating my heels last week was worth it. I did it because I assumed we were heading towards sandal-wearing weather and it seems to be a pretty universal recommendation!

I thought flip-flops were not good because you tend to curl your toes to keep them on?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/05/2016 00:25

I was wandering through Primark today (I wanted some basic long sleeved tops) they have some nice plain basics but so much when I touch it is crispy nylon.
There is very little in the way of natural fibre (though Primark and H&M have some 100% cotton cardigans).
I wear the sleeveless vests as a base layer to work (I have to wear a white tunic, polycotton) so wear either skintone or navy underneath.

They have some button up shirts but I know from past experience they look rubbish after one wash so I don't look there.

Too much make-up, melting eyeliner, badly applied bronzer, the 'tide mark' all a no-no.

And my Number One Summer Pet Hate (even worse than opening the door and flies/wasps zoom in) is people walking around topless or not enough clothes.
I don't want to look at expanses of sweaty flesh. It's not a beach, it's a bus stop or a supermarket.
Put it away .

GhettoFabulous · 29/05/2016 08:46

What about office wear? I don't think strappy tops are appropriate and feel funny about not wearing tights although I do if it's really hot (Scotland, so it hardly ever comes up!) It's not a very formal environment but I visit people at home and I'm in meetings in other locations frequently.

3dogsandacat · 29/05/2016 08:56

I don't wear scrappy tops. Unless I'm at the beach.

Strappy tops.

That's my issue too...looking suit-smart in Summer. On South Coast here so quite warm already. I have to dress smartly with heels, plus walk quite a bit visiting customers in hospitals (so even hotter/miles of corridors!). Winter is easy as I wear wedge boots and tights, but Summer is a constant challenge to look professional yet be comfortable.

Luckyfucky - flip flops aren't like barefoot walking, in the same way that ballet flats aren't either. When you're properly barefoot, or in shoes like Fivefingers, you naturally land on the forefoot and roll off the toe.

But in flip flops or ballet flats, people tend to heel strike and kind of slap their feet down. There's also a tendency to overpronate - you see this a lot in ballet flats especially. And in flip flops, people screw their ties up to keep them on, leading to the "waddle."

I'm a fan of "barefoot" running, which is why I've read up on this stuff, and now I really notice it - especially when people are wearing v cheap, thin, ballet flats. it stops them walking properly.

Anyway, back to the thread! I'd just add - Birkenstocks or decent sandals are good, thin ballet flats look cheap. If your sandals are falling apart, get new ones - ruined shoes change a whole outfit IMO.

Loud patterns are usually a bit hideous but, if you're going for it anyway, think ahead and plan your outfit.
The number of times I've seen a garish patterned Joules-esque raincoat thrown on over a clashing patterned dress, because the wearer got caught out by sudden rain or wind on a changeable summers day...

christinarossetti · 29/05/2016 09:18

If it's really hot I don't wear tights with skirts or dresses, although make sure my legs are well moisturised even if deathly white.

I've never worn stroppy tops unless as a base layer. I don't understand how they're meant to be cooler than a loose cotton shirt or tee shirt.

Def keep shoulders covered for work.

PurpleRibbons · 29/05/2016 09:31

This thread is just what I need! I was just thinking yesterday how stressful summer dressing is, give me skinny jeans, leather boots and a nice coat any day!
The biggest problem I have is that my feet are really narrow and sandals of any type rub. I don't want to wear trainers without socks either so I really struggle with summer footwear.
Totally agree about avoiding the black capris with bright patterned top. I avoid linen too, it always looks creased and I find loose trousers really chafe!

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 29/05/2016 09:45

This year I'm going for the boaty look. Lots of navy and white, stripes, Capri pants or baggy shorts, white trainers (leather so wipe clean). I also like the 50s look like Marilyn Monroe with slash necks, three quarter sleeves and Capri pants. Or t-shit and cardi.

eyestightshut · 29/05/2016 10:06

What about those of us who are thunderous-of-thigh? Capri /cigarette pants and skinny jeans are all well and good for those of you who are blessed with long lean limbs, but what do those of us with hefty thighs and not the thinnest of ankles wear?!

YaySirNaySir · 29/05/2016 10:07

Good thread.

I personally avoid:
Linen trousers especially wide baggy ones
Big flowery prints
Nylon/ polyester
Leggings- they look fine in winter but awful in summer IMO.
Toms that look dirty
Too much bling/fake tan/ make-up

I like these looks-
Black maxi dress
Maxi and midi skirts
Simple cotton sundresses
Denim jacket
Well fitted Capri pants - no bagging around the bum!
Rolled up skinnies
Fitted suntop/ vests
Nice sandals, flip flops, converse without socks
Nice sunnies and hair.
Subtle make-up and fake tan
Nice bits of silver jewellery

potatoscowls · 29/05/2016 10:23

Buy most things a size too big and avoid wearing too many colours at once.

PestilentialCat · 29/05/2016 10:25

I like floaty wide-legged patterned trousers with a plain vest top or fitted t-shirt, but only on other people! When I try them on, I immediately think pyjamas - perhaps I need less of a pattern?

JackandDiane · 29/05/2016 10:46

i wear flip flops indoors all year. Wouldn't wear out ( unless like quick dart ot petrol station or to see a mate) if I was ' dressed'

Lol at french women - most of them look a mess everytime I am on holiday

JackandDiane · 29/05/2016 10:47

dont wear LEGGINGS

for any reason apart from at the Gym
they are so shit and cheap looking
Or those hideous polyester ' tea dresses'
BARF

JackandDiane · 29/05/2016 10:48

oh and NO to Capri - YES to 7/8
If you have had your cut off trousers for longer than 2 years then they are the wrong length

PurpleRibbons · 29/05/2016 10:48

I have just moisturised all over and rolled up my skinny jeans - all ready for summer now!

TwentyOneGuns · 29/05/2016 11:05

I disagree about flip flops being for the beach only. I discovered Havaianas last year and they're so comfy I live in them when it's warm and think they suit me much better than sandals which can rub and be uncomfortable. I do tend to wear them with non-beach type clothes though which I guess helps :)

I find summer dressing can be tricky but have built up a collection of bits over the past few years which work for me. I like loose jersey or cotton trousers, rolled up chinos, cotton dresses, denim shorts and sweatshirts for when it's cooler. I shop everywhere from Primark (find their summer stuff much better than winter) to FatFace (mainly in the sale but great for natural fabrics which can be hard to find). I think a decent bag (just bought a tan leather one from White Stuff) and a few nice accessories (love my straw trilby) help.

EnidButton · 29/05/2016 13:05

Flip flops are for protecting your feet from hot sand and for walking back to your villa/room.

Also for wearing when you've just had a pedicure and don't want to smudge the colour.

Otherwise, no.

EnidButton · 29/05/2016 13:05

I didn't read your post Twenty so that wasn't aimed at you. Grin

specialsubject · 29/05/2016 15:13

Suncream. Real suncream to avoid looking a twerp the next day. Hidden underwear. Please no cleavage or exposed arse , not pretty.

Good exp!anation of the ballet flat waddle, which looks as rough as the high heel stagger. Wear shoes you can walk in.

3dogsandacat · 29/05/2016 17:24

So what's the right length to wear, now?
I need to know.
