Help please! Would I look ridiculous wearing this outfit/skirt to the races?

Well, kind of like this.
My first time going to the races - apparently we are going to the "nice" part but not the super-posh area.
Would this kind of outfit look ok? The top will either be a stripey or plain black boatneck one and the skirt I'm eyeing up is a little bit less "pouffy" and more nude than pink.
Will l look stupid? I can hoestly not tell!

That link doesn't work king , I wonder if they are sold out?
lola thank you for the pointers. We have spent a lot on the tickets and apparently will be somewhere with a roof and quite sheltered. The shoe suggestion is very valid though, so I think it'll have to be wedges.

I have a clutch very similar to this one already, I think it would go ok?

Yes, perfect.

wallybantersjunkbox · 22/05/2016 13:21

Fab outfit.

Just one thing...my colleague wore an entirely black version to the Christmas party, the skirt was absolute ruined by cigarettes snagging on it and melting holes in the fabric.

Luckily she was too drunk to care, but be wary of people holding cigarettes op.

justkeeponsmiling · 22/05/2016 18:21

Thanks for the warning wally !
For whoever has been asking, I just bought this on ebay. It cost me £32 including postage. Happy to podt a pic once I have had it so people can see what it looks like in real life if anyone is interested :)

Nice skirt, think you may need a wide ribbon belt / waistband to make it look sleek at the waist though?

Yes dance , I was thinking of how to hide the waistband, a ribbon belt would be good

So pretty!

PersonalSpace · 22/05/2016 22:08

The second photo with the plain top is fabulous the first photo looks a mess!

bojorojo · 22/05/2016 22:51

I hope you are not 50 op? It is a skirt for someone aged below 30 (ideally below 25). You won't look ridiculous if all your friends adopt similar attire. Most other race goers won't but don't worry too much about that. There was a similar skirt worn by a girl at Chester Races published in the Liverpool Echo recently so you may even get in the papers! Wedges would look yuk with this skirt. Stilettos is the only shoe to wear. My DD wears a red version of this skirt and stilettos is the only shoe to wear - if you sink into the grass - walk on the balls of your feet or avoid grass. Have a good day.

Gosh bojo - thanks for the blunt assessment. I'm 36. It hadn't occurred to me that I might be too old for that look. Too late now anyway!

I also think that these pics of ladies who are not under 25 still look fab

Op, I can't tell in the photo if the shoes are suede or leather. I recommend that you don't wear suede shoes to the races as you will be walking on grass. Mown grass, but nonetheless if it's at all damp it will ruin your suede shoes.
I speak from experience.
I think the outfit is lovely, but I second what another poster said which is race courses are large open spaces, and if it were windy then the skirt could get blown up.

WutheringTights · 23/05/2016 09:20

I went to Chester races last year, in the restaurant (nice bit but not super posh). I was entertaining clients so wore a business- style dress and jacket. There were all sorts there, from casual, to business suits, to royal wedding mother of the bride style outfits, complete with massive hats and fascinators. Also, I didn't do any walking on grass as we stayed in the restaurant to eat then went outside to bet (which was all hard surface with tiered seating like at a stadium). I think we could have gone to the tents on the grassed area though if we had wanted to. I think your outfits looks lovely and would lift in fine.

Pootles2010 · 23/05/2016 09:23

'Avoid grass' Grin I would second the worry about it being windy - only been to York, but it is so, so windy there! Lovely skirt mind.

Floisme · 23/05/2016 09:28

Thanks for making me laugh, Bojoro. The comment about age is a bit predictable but the advice to wear stilletos and and walk on the balls of your feet is priceless.

It's a lovely outfit, op. I've only been to the races a couple of times but from what I've seen (and assuming you're not in a section with a dress code) absolutely anything goes.

Pootles2010 · 23/05/2016 09:29

Oh Wuthering I stand corrected - at York you really have to go on the grass at some point!

Doingitover · 23/05/2016 09:29

Chester is a real mix of people so don't worry too much about being under/over dressed. I go 3/4 times a year and always see a variety of outfits. (I love outfit spotting)
Take a small brolly and comfy shoes are a must! especially if you are staying out in Chester after the races (black low heeled pumps would look cute). The girls in really high shoes always end up looking a little daft.
No real rules on hats. Some do some don't. (Black floppy hat would look nice or fancy black hair clip).
Have fun SmileWineSmile

justkeeponsmiling · 23/05/2016 10:03

Thank you for all the reassurance! I was having a bit of a wobble but feel better again now. Have ordered a pair of mid high black heeled strappy sandals (much like the first pic) as my friends have said similar - mostly paved so heels are ok but suede might spoil. Will just have to keep my fingers crossed re the wind - or might sew some curtain weights into the lining/underskirt!
I might go all out now and wear a fascinator too Grin

As someone who goes racing all the time, all over the country, I can assure you my advice is well researched and believe me, sinking into rain sodden turf is no fun. I have seen countless women tip-toeing round on wet soggy grass. I am sure you can keep to hard surfaces if you just stay in a restaurant.

The general rule regarding dressing for the races is to keep it to day wear. Not eveningwear. However,I am sure that all of you posting who have never been racing, or only been once or twice know better.

My 20 year old daughter wears this sort of skirt with high heeled pumps. She wears it out in the evening and looks $million. Fascinators are - hmmmm - well I had better not say. Get a pillbox - a proper hat if you want to wear one.

Sunshineandwaves · 23/05/2016 10:54

I love it!
