Is there such a thing as an 'edgy', 'cool' dress for a 48 year old woman? Does it exist?

And before you start, I absolutely hate those fifties style dresses that always get recommended on here Smile

I am going to a summer party and want to look slightly rock n roll and boho.

Not maxi (always frumpy imo), not a wrap dress, nothing from Boden, BUT something that hides knees.

How can it be so impossibly hard?!?

If a short person wants a fantastic jumpsuit (or a taller person wants a cropped one), the new Uniqlo wrap one is fantastic.

From the Outnet, I saw these which might work?
Navy crepe Joseph I know, it should be brighter, but the shape!
Bright stripes architectural
Kin at JL
Would you consider a two piece?
VW Anglomania

Lurking with interest :)

Wow, FindersKeepers - that VW skirt is amazing! It's also v.simple; almost just a cushion cover with a waistband...

So, thanks to this thread, today's to-do list looks something like:
. Knock up a skirt to Vivienne Westwood standards...
. Get my boring hair cut off
. Run to TK Maxx
. Go to Germany, then maybe the US, for something to fit my long torso and Quarterback shoulders. Seriously, though, that's very interesting about the different brands and their demographics.

This thread is really helping me. I'm waiting for 2 pairs of shoes and 2 dresses to arrive - Topshop tall, Monsoon, Kurt Geiger and something Ive never heard of (all via eBay/Shoeaholic), and I'm not actually dreading the party. Like others, I struggle to spend money on clothes for myself, but I'm (almost) enjoying this, so thanks everyone Grin

Just one more hijack (sorry OP, me, me,me!), but Ive looked at a LOT of silk/cotton shirt dresses this past week. I think I love them, but I also think they look just like nightshirts. And some wrap dresses look like kimono type dressing gowns. How do people wear them, without looking as if they're in their nightwear (I'd hate for the head to have to ban me from the playground for doing the school run in my PJ's Blush).

Nyama, I tried the Desigual dress on that Mrsmortis linked and it didn't cover my knees (I'm 5'8") I absolutely love Desigual currently but the trouble with it this year imo is everything is really short or maxi. I wondered about this one but need to try it on as it has potential to be a nork nightmare.

Love this dress from Hush it's quite plain but also edgy I reckon.

DMBL40 featured it in this blog which may give you some more ideas of knee hiding dresses

WomaninScotland Where have you been looking at cotton/silk dresses, please? I need some!

WomanScorned · 20/05/2016 11:41

Hi Remus,
I tried 8 on, yesterday, in TX Maxx, and am awaiting a Whistles one, via eBay. I just searched for 'silk shirt dress' - mind you, if it looks anything like the crumpled potato sacks I tried on, you're welcome to it, lol! (It seems I have less 'style' than a coat hanger Confused). River Island, Zara and Julien MacDonald came up a lot. We'll probably end up in a bidding war for them!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/05/2016 16:49

You're safe - I don't do online orders, unless I've tried it on irl first!

WomanScorned · 20/05/2016 17:00

(Not sure why I wrote Whistles, when I meant Karen Millen - probably because I've become obsessed to the point of dreaming about bloody dresses!)

burnishedsilver · 20/05/2016 17:02

Have a look at the most recent post on does my bum look 40.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/05/2016 17:09

BumLady is lovely, but I've gone right off her blog and don't like much of what she's wearing these days.
