Is there such a thing as an 'edgy', 'cool' dress for a 48 year old woman? Does it exist?

And before you start, I absolutely hate those fifties style dresses that always get recommended on here Smile

I am going to a summer party and want to look slightly rock n roll and boho.

Not maxi (always frumpy imo), not a wrap dress, nothing from Boden, BUT something that hides knees.

How can it be so impossibly hard?!?

All Saints? Self Portrait? Day Birger et Mikkelsen? (Although Self Portrait is probably too pretty and not v rock n roll!) I think it's all about the styling really. Absolutely no nude patent courts or matching bags and shoes! Wear peep-toe shoe-boots or funky strappy chunky sandals or "Cage" shoes and some edgy jewellery. How tall are you and what colours do you like?

Or you could wear a jumpsuit? Whistles has a nice simple Bardot dress if you like showing your shoulders?

Nyama · 17/05/2016 10:33

Thanks shirkingworking!

I am tall 5 9 and a size 12/14, I have bosoms and must wear a bra so no bardot tops. I will try those brands thank you

Also try Vivienne Westwood

phoolani · 17/05/2016 10:38

Somethin from cos with peep toe shoe boots should sort you out.

Gruach · 17/05/2016 10:45

Can't make up my mind about this.

CactusTeeth · 17/05/2016 10:46

I would say Cos, other stories, allsaints. I'm 47

You got good height and size which I'm very jealous of, cow Grin

CarpetDiem · 17/05/2016 10:47

Open toe boots & chunky jewels with this? www.tedbaker.com/uk/Womens/Clothing/Dresses/OROGYN-Shirt-dress-Blue/p/121254-14-BLUE

cissyfuss · 17/05/2016 10:49

Def going to recommend Cos too... Prob go for 14 if a more fitted style... I have 'boobs' and sometimes they can be neat across the chest (Scandi body shape styling)

Here are two I'd go for...

Oh yes, Cos... V good. Quite "sculptural" and maybe not boho enough but definitely the opposite of Boden and 50s halterneck dresses. I'd seriously consider a jumpsuit though if I were you Nyama. You can show a bit of cleavage (jealous) and, as Cactus says, you are lovely and tall so will look willowy. I love All Saints although they normally do very grungey (cool) colours that tend to make me look a bit bleugh.

cissyfuss · 17/05/2016 10:54

Other Stories have some fabulous print shirt dresses in at the moment....

Love this!

Yes - I would go for a jumpsuit. You're tall, so it would look good, plus it covers up the bits you want to cover. Asymmetric dresses are going to show your knees and tbh I think unless you look edgy yourself (cool haircut, weird jewellery, etc), you can look like you're trying too hard if you go for something that's very fashionable. Better to go for something effortlessly stylish and timeless (like a jumpsuit). Shoes can be flat or heeled and you just need a nice necklace et voila!

lucy101101 · 17/05/2016 14:02

Another vote for Cos or Other Stories - I would be looking for both of those on eBay too. You might find something in TKMaxx... they have a contemporary designers section near me with some fabulous and not very expensive things.

Queenbean · 17/05/2016 14:06

I'm about the same size and shape as you and have just bought this - it is gorgeous and really flattering

I'm in my early 40s and I love desigual. You may have to search to find a length that covers your knees and but isn't a maxi though. Or get one of the shirts and wear it over some form of trouser? How about this one?

squizita · 17/05/2016 14:09

Viv Westwood
Whistles
River Island can have some gems in terms of knee or lower length but edgy
70s and 80s higher end vintage (Gucci and issy miyake etc' as opposed to 50s repro tat which is not FUCKING VINTAGE GRRR from an online shop like Lovely's or Oxfam).
TK Maxx Gold... especially Ralph Lauren stuff, quite classic.

Mind you I currently live in good undies and stretch knee length dresses, I get the 'look' from patterns as opposed to shapes.

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 17/05/2016 17:13

Finery www.finerylondon.com/uk/t/dresses

Some dresses only cover one knee though!

KittyKrap · 17/05/2016 17:15

AllSaints. Love them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/05/2016 17:35

Defiitely Westwood if you're feeling rich.
Maybe All Saints.
Whistles often worth a look.

Or for a lower budget, maybe something like this with lots of bangles, or a big cuff? I know it's Monsoon but it is black and boho, so could be edgy with the right accessories and attitude!
