'Mumsy' , 'granny' and 'old lady' all give me the rage.
And that's not a pretty sight.

I get what you're saying Narp.

When styles come round again (70s, 80s revivals for instance) I tend to steer clear, in case someone thinks I've been wearing them ever since then and haven't realised fashions change!

See, I love clothes but don't really care about fashion. I'm big enough, old enough and ugly enough these days to know if something suits me or not, and if I like something or not. Fashion doesn't really come into it.

I like the shape but I think it would be too long on me, I want something brighter too.
It is nice though.

triathlon if I did that I would never get dressed. There is nothing in the shops I haven't worn before.
Rien. Nichts. Nada.

I couldn't wear that because the neckline is too high (big boobs here.)

Brillo - that is actually VERY bright for me! Grin

I love the 'pinafore' style dresses that are around at the moment though I'm torn because they look, to me, like they need a top underneath, and then it makes me wonder if it would look like something I wore when I was 6!

I especially like denim ones.

Will you try on, OP, or jump in and order?

But why is the model in the John Lewis pic wearing her grandad's carpet slippers? It ruins the look IMO.

Agree re "frumpy", "mumsy" etc. Often a euphemism for not looking as young and/or thin and/or impractial as some people think we should. Eg I've seen it used at work, by senior men, to dismiss and undermine senior women.

There are far fewer similar words for men with children/over a certain age or weight.

Oasis have a nice looking denim one, but it definitely looks as if it would need a t-shirt under it.

Flat shoes are often deemed "frumpy", especially if you're not slim, so what are women who need to stand or walk a lot, have back or joint problems or diastasis recti or pregnancy, or who simply dislike flats supposed to do? Men don't get called frumpy for wearing flat shoes.

Grr

Brillo - have currently given up on my red cotton dress hunt. Agree this one would look good in red.

I really like it, but can anyone tell where it is waisted? I can't see in the pitied but it looks like it might be more empire line and that doesn't work for meSad

I always wear flats unless I'm in my wheelchair, I can't walk in heels at all anymore.
I have my eye on a denim, daisy print Superdry pinafore but I know it won't go down well here!
Remus, I really want a casual red dress, can't find a single one.

I actually think 'frumpy' is quite a good word. As a flat shoe wearer, I'd be quite happy if we claimed it.

But the other words are just insulting women for being well.... women. Nice.

MuttonCadet · 15/05/2016 19:34

I'm not a fan of the dress, mainly because of the pinafore pockets and high neckline.

But if you like it go for it!

This is pretty, Brillo - but v teenage! I couldn't wear it anymore, sadly.

I agree re neckline and same for the Tu one. Shame as I like the print on both (and wear black in summer)

"When styles come round again (70s, 80s revivals for instance) I tend to steer clear, in case someone thinks I've been wearing them ever since then and haven't realised fashions change!"

Same here. I wore platform shoes and wedges in the 1970s, I'm not wearing them again.

"See, I love clothes but don't really care about fashion. I'm big enough, old enough and ugly enough these days to know if something suits me or not, and if I like something or not. Fashion doesn't really come into it."

Remus that is exactly how I feel. I wear appropriate styles for me, not the latest fashion (which would look tragic on me)

Nickname - Exactly. I may not always get it right but at least I'm trying to be guided by my own tastes, body and day to day needs, rather than by what some 25 year old guy in Milan or whatever thinks women should be wearing today.
