If I asked you to describe your style, could you do it?

Full disclosure: I'm a market researcher, and currently doing some research for one of the Big 4 supermarkets on their clothing. One of our clients has asserted that it's difficult/impossible for people to describe their own style, and that only other people could do this about you.

I wondered about this. Personally I'm really not into fashion, so it's hard for me to describe my 'style' other than scruffy, but then I was wondering if this confirmed her statement!

I'm not looking for answers to my research (because I actually haven't told you what it's really about Wink), but wanted to see what you fashionistas thought to this claim.

Hamish Shock why would you say you aren't interesting? That's an awful thing to say about yourself!

my sister would tell you i dress i like a teenager but tbh, the teenagers i see these days are far more well turned out than me

I would guess my style lies somewhere on the alternative of old sort of spectrum so a little bit emo, a little bit scene, a little bit vintage, a little bit grunge and a little bit goth

I scrub up alright if the time and place demand it though Grin

I found this book interesting style-wise:

www.amazon.co.uk/Style-Statement-Live-Your-Design-Carrie-McCarthy/dp/0316067164

It is specifically about finding the best description for your style in two words, one of which is supposed to be the 80% foundation and the other the 20% "edge".

It IS a bit woo, but I enjoyed it. And it's cheap now Grin

I had to learn from S&B and Internet guides how to identify my style.

Statelychangers · 15/05/2016 08:19

Casual, androgenous, not classic!

Hamishandthefoxes · 15/05/2016 08:50

Sorry biwi! Clothes wise I'm not interesting... I have friends who look amazing and wear really interesting and unusual outfits which look amazing. The edgiest I get is All Saints...

Mainly: Casual understated rock chick

For work: sleek chic classic

BIWI · 15/05/2016 10:48

If was rocking the rock chick look, Yay, what would that look like? What would I be wearing?

I'm mostly drawn to low key cool: simple, understated with a modern twist. But I'll never really belong in that camp as I also wear colour and have a soft spot for glam rock.
Think Sofia Coppola styled by Ziggy Stardust..

ARichVernacular · 15/05/2016 11:42

Pretty but tough.

I love clothes but girly/soft edged stuff doesn't work on me (loud voice, strong body, martial stride etc Grin). So no fluttery, floaty, frilly, lacy, pastel, thin-heeled business.

Basically I'm still living the short skirt big boots years in my head (and sometimes in real life).

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 15/05/2016 11:45

Casual, simple, laid back, neutral . I don't really do accessories and value comfort. I wear a lot of grey and black, I don't own anything bright or patterned.

A typical outfit would be jeans, loose fit grey/white/black t shirt, black cardigan and either my very worn out grey converse or black Nike trainers.

Holy fuck I've just read that again and thought, what an arse I sound. Sorry Blush

CaroleService · 15/05/2016 12:45

Like I've opened Asos, headbutted the keyboard, and bought whatever came up.

Then wore it all at once.

YaySirNaySir · 15/05/2016 13:47

Like these with loose long hair, not too styled, smoky eye make-up and high heeled biker boots.

Another one who finds the correlation between MB personality types and HOC styles fascinating. I've recently had all 3 done - MB, HOC Colours and HOC Style Day and can't see a definite link but I bet there's some overlap.

I suppose I'd describe my style as comfy, youthful (sometimes too much so Grin, informal and I'd like to think creative - the stuff I wear is actually quite simple but I like a little something unusual to give it an edge even if it's not obvious to anyone but me.

n0ne · 15/05/2016 16:20

Wow, that's hard. My style is composed from some very different elements. Goth/grunge/Victoriana on the one hand, natural colours/prints/fabrics on the other, dash of nautical (stripes and military buttons), sprinkle of 'countryside' (tweed etc), squeeze of hippy. Like to mix masculine and feminine. My casual look aims for cute and a little sexy, my formal look strong but feminine and alluring. Oh, and I love bright colours in the summer (I'm brown so they suit me).

So all over the place, really! It'd be easier to say what I don't like!

Sometimes I have days when I pretend that Eccentric Old Biddy was the look I was aiming for.

I'd use words like quirky and colourful, but also co-ordinated and fitted. Being short, I don't really suit lots of floaty wafty things, so a neat prom/ skater dress with a cardi are my staples. I add my own personality with shoes (I'm famous for them, especially coloured ones, but rarely spikey heels) and jewelry (I buy it when I travel).
