Mother of the Bride outfits (not easy)

Hi

I thought I would start a new thread. I cannot be the only person who is finding this a nightmare. I have got a dress but it is so expensive to start with and the matching jacket is expensive too. I don't really want to start again.

Alot of the stuff is synthetic and it is a Summer wedding. I had a beautiful Fenwright and Manson outfit which was a lace overlay but is was all synthetic and I thought it would make me hot and sweaty.

I hate jackets and I would rather wear a bolero but is it not formal enough. I was hoping there may be some sort of offer but of course it relates to other makes but not mine. I did try another make but it didn't work with my dress. I think I will end up spending at least £300 but at least the dress fits properly.

Have you checked out Ebay.

I sold my MOB outfit for a tenth of what it cost me. Worn once and perfect.

Mmm, TBH it's generally worth the extra hassle and fuss to find something with sleeves than get into the whole two piece game.

Totally understand you not wanting to start all over again though. Could you link to your dress, someone might have a good idea of something that'd work with it.

Size, colour, budget? Is it just a jacket /top you are looking for ?

Have you got any dress agencies near you, or charity shops that specialise in high end clothes?
If you can get to one it means you can try stuff on rather than buying online with crossed fingers. We have three here and most items are in as new condition.

This dress is lovely and fits well. I have bought cream jacket today and pink shrug.

The phase 8 jackets I tried didn't work & it's hard to match pinks

Mango have a cream jacket that may work but a wrap would be lovely with that. Will look for an example.

What about something like this? Lightweight, can remove it after the service. I dont necessarily mean this exact one, but this style.

This could work very well I think. Phase8 have a lot of shades, I'm not convinced any of them have the right subtlety of tone but maybe worth a look.

No, it's lovely but probably the wrong pink. The pink one that matched was £189 but only available online in JL.

yours is hard to beat but if you don't want to either buy the offical jack or make 1001 attempts at a colour match you will have to rethink.

It's daft that there are so few options with sleeves. They'd sell tonnes if they made them.

Is something in a print, with sleeves and natural fibres.

Bombshell also do sleeves in cotton and silk. I have a Liberty print which I've been really comfortable in at 'events' in both English/Scottish summers as well as sweltering 'foreign climes'

I will probably stick to my dress as I know it fits well. That is half the battle as a lot of the dresses don't fit and they gape or waist is in wrong place.

I really appreciate the links as the dresses are lovely. I agree about sleeves.

Pink is warmer than pic and corsage and pink fascinator to set off dress?

I'm in the same boat and I've decided a jacket with my dress will turn it frumpy. This is my dress, and I might get a pashmina. I've got lovely shoes and will wear a hat, which I haven't found yet. I think you have to go with who you are. I saw a pic of an old friend on fb recently at her daughter's wedding, normally she looks fantastic and stylish, but she'd done the full MOB thing and she was unrecognisable (not in a good way).

OP which is the official jacket for the dress? Worth a look on eBay? Sorry if you've already tried...

The dress is gorgeous by the way, so good for a spring wedding.

I'd say the shrug takes the dress down a notch in terms of smartness and suitability for MOB. The right jacket (cropped could look good) would work so well.

I think that's a lovely dress. I also think a matching jacket or shrug will make it look frumpy and dated. I always cover my arms so I feel your pain.

If it was winter I might look for a faux fur cropped jacket but I guess it's the wrong time of year. (Or maybe not, looking out of the window). Basically something glamorous but ever so slightly off kilter if you get my drift.

Otherwise I think I'd try and find a smart, lightweight knee length coat and wear it open: something smart enough for a wedding but also plain that I could wear again (to justify the expense). I wore a slightly 50s, wool-crepe , swingy Boden coat at a wedding last year (although I wasn't MOTB) and it worked well.

It seriously pisses me off that these places don't do more sleeves.

I also think a cream jacket. A boxy short one would work well. The Hobbs dress is cotton so should be cool to wear. Accessories should be cream. Please, as the Mother of the Bride, do not wear a fascinator. Nothing looks worse. A small hat is fine but fascinatiors are dead in the water!
