Superga, Vans, Ash etc

Last year I bought Converse for the first time and wore them for two days on holiday, after which my feet ached so much I haven't worn them since. So, I'd like to try something different but with more support/padding. Possibly a bit of a platform sole to add a bit of height but not essential. Don't mind slip ons or laces. Is there a make that's known to be the most comfortable?

I have Nike Air Force 1s and they super comfortable. They have a little bit of lift too, and I'm put them through the wash 3 times so far and they come up great. They look a little worn in (better in my opinion) but are clean.

Superga's are good too and a bit lighter for Summer.

OnlyLovers · 25/04/2016 13:22

Personally I love Converse although I am the wrong side of 40- –but in my defence I've been wearing them for ever.

I've never tried Supergas. I've worn Vans in the past and found them very comfortable. The most comfortable ever, though, for me, is Airwalk, although I haven't looked at/for any for years so have no idea what they look like now.

theredjellybean · 25/04/2016 13:27

converse with orthotic supprts in them :)

LaConnerie · 25/04/2016 13:32

I'm sorry Only, I'm sure yours are lovely. I'm the wrong side of 40 too.

I have just been put off by one particular little mum-gang at the school who regularly post their new converse on FB with cool comments (that I'm too uncool to remember). And the converse are always glittery, or neon, or generally rank.

OnlyLovers · 25/04/2016 13:37

LaConnerie, no worries, I wasn't taking umbrage!

I do not own any glittery or neon ones; I'd like to make that clear. Some of them may be considered rank, though, by other people; who knows?!

I did used to have some metallic gold ones (soft gold, not super-shiny like a mirror).

knowler · 25/04/2016 14:06

"Post their new converse on FB with cool comments"... Christ on a Bike. I feel for you LaConnerie.

LaConnerie · 25/04/2016 14:15

Thank you knowler, I appreciate that Grin

I would defriend them but it's a school (unofficial) FB page so handy for stuff. Apart from the '#shopping for theez muvvas with ma baes' comments...

LaConnerie · 25/04/2016 14:22

For some reason when you buy some new Converse you have to use gang-speak, apparently...

OnlyLovers · 25/04/2016 14:44

I don't use gang-speak when I buy new Converse.

I just wanted to make that clear. Grin

Thanks for all the suggestions. I managed to get my feet into some superga trainers this morning but wasn't convinced. New balance are a bit too sporty for what I'm after but look very comfy. I've found some navy ones by a company called Daniel which are very soft leather and flexible. Fingers crossed.

I have Ash Jam Bis slip-ons and although they're quite heavy, they're extremely comfortable.

I don't get on well with Converse (the thin, super-flat sole makes my feet burn with pain in no time) so these have been a great alternative.

The inners are leather with padded heels and they're comfy for walking all day.

When I first got them, I thought I'd never get my feet in them as they seemed so tight but after a few wears, they were perfect.

mathanxiety · 25/04/2016 15:51

Nike Roshe Run, for women.

Where I live, unless you are a teenager you would not be seen wearing any of the other brands mentioned here.

gustofwind · 25/04/2016 16:18

Supers or Stans here

ameliaesmith · 25/04/2016 16:29

Once converse are broken in they're unbeatable for comfort, they just take a bit of time to soften up. Give them another go!

hollieberrie · 25/04/2016 17:37

I have the Converse Lo (Dainty) - find them so much more comfortable than normal Converse, they dont seem so narrow, and the look is pretty similar.

Superga, Vans, Ash etc
WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 25/04/2016 18:19

I too have worn Converse for years and I'm the wrong side of 45, never mind 40! However I do not use gang-speak when I buy new ones, I wouldn't know how to for one thing! Grin I also wear Ash which I find extremely comfortable, more so than Converse actually, but agree with a previous poster that they do wear out quickly where as Converse don't. Have been fancying some Stan Smiths myself too as they look comfy

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 25/04/2016 18:27

If you do go for Ash though OP and you're ordering online, I would order a size down as they do tend to be quite generous Smile

loumayfield · 25/04/2016 19:42

i can't agree more i have a pair of converse myself and the sole of those shoes are so thin the arches of my feet were seriously aching after a day or two of wearing them. I would personally go for vans they are much more comfortable and i more trendy looking.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 25/04/2016 21:31

Converse aren't for me. I've got two pairs and they're far less comfortable than other shoes. Re the age thing, my mum is in her 70's and looks great in them Grin

I like a soft leather flatform for a casual look at the moment.

goingmadinthecountry · 25/04/2016 22:50

I'm the wrong side of 50. Wear low top silver converse quite a lot - padded on the bottom so no old people sole issues. Probably just my age but grew up with them. Superga a bit mumsy for me, and would no more wear Skechers than poke my eyes out with a stick. Vans make my feet look really fat. I may be 52 but I do have standards. Trainers are for sport only so Nike will never be popular with me except on the tennis court.

goingmadinthecountry · 25/04/2016 22:58

And Nike Roche are very very very ugly indeed unless being worn for sport. It really doesn't matter how comfortable they are. I would definitely judge someone wearing them as real shoes for going out in. For goodness' sake, I never let my children wear trainers out even as very young people unless it was for a genuine sporting event. Totally unacceptable.

MotherBluestocking · 25/04/2016 23:04

goingmadinthecountry Will you be my best friend?

However in the 21st century, totally acceptable.

MrsK · 25/04/2016 23:46

I do love my high top Converse but agree they aren't comfortable if you wear them all day. Bought these recently & they are so comfortable

*goingmadinthecountry, I totally agree with everything you said 😃
