No wash hair-self cleaning? It's bollox no?

I know someone at work who today joined a conversation about shampoo (I know-gripping)by saying they hadn't washed their hair for 5 years. Just wet it and that's it as shampoo strips all the oil. Tbh their hair looks terrible, lank and greasy. I've heard this before (from friends of the hippy persuasion) but it is a load of tosh isn't it?

I wash my hair once a week and do not use shampoo at all. It doesn't smell.

KP86 · 05/02/2016 08:33

Had a (male) friend who had hair down to his bum and he didn't wash it with shampoo at all and it was beautiful.

You still need to wash with water and give it a GOOD brushing everyday to spread the oils around. It works best on thicker hair, I think. His hair was really thick.

I have thin, greasy hair. At best I can, with liberal dry shampoo, get away with two days, but it's every day 95% of the time. When I was pregnant I would wash my hair in the morning and it would be a greasy slicked mess by lunch time. Ewww!

PitilessYank · 05/02/2016 08:48

I have a Korean friend with very thick, straight hair who does not use shampoo and his hair is gorgeous. He invited me to smell it once, and so I leaned in and took a whiff. It smelled fine; kind of earthy, not perfume-y, just natural.

By contrast, I tried the no-shampoo method for two months (!), using the baking soda/Ac vinegar method, and my hair looked hideous and smelled if guess what, vinegar!! There was a morning where for about 30 minutes I had myself convinced that my hair was starting to adjust, but that was probably just a vinegar fume-induced delusion.

wonkylegs · 05/02/2016 09:21

I suspect it is as people have been pointing out a bit hair type dependent.
I wash my hair once every 7-10days anymore and it just becomes dry and brittle. It's long, thick and curly and I brush it everyday.
DH however washes his everyday as otherwise it looks greasy, it's thin, straight and short.

Nimportequoi · 05/02/2016 09:22

I have long thick and straight dark hair and only wash them every 18-21 days with water and sensitive soap. I do use serum afterwards though. I brush them twice daily and have bangs. I start using dry shampoo by day 15-16 though and it's ponytail only from that stage. My hair is amazing, very often get positive comments and people are stunned I wash them so infrequently. I have no specific method, I just started extending amount of time between washes because it takes forever to dry them afterwards. So it works for some lucky (?) few.

burnishedsilver · 05/02/2016 09:39

If its dry shampoo and suitable for ponytail only for up to 6 days a month, I'm not sure I'd call that a huge success.

I don't like the idea of not using shampoo, but I do only wash my hair between once a week and once a fortnight. It starts looking better (in terms of styling) once I've passed the 5 day mark after washing. I don't brush my hair either, I use my fingers. My hair is fine, not much of it and curly. Dd's hair is very curly and long and thicker and more of it than mine, is brushed every day as it has to be plaited for school, but she hates having it washed and it's now been around 3 weeks since the last wash...it doesn't really smell, but it does need a wash because it just does! now and will be washed after swimming on Wednesday next week.

RudeElf · 05/02/2016 09:43

I was thinking that too burnished.

Pandsbear · 05/02/2016 09:56

I have to wash my hair every day (thin & fine). DTD1 has long thick hair that can go a whole week and still smells of shampoo when she swishes by. I find this incredible and am quite jealous. DTD2 has finer hair that needs washing a couple of times a week as otherwise it has that unwashed hair smell. It is just different hair/different people.

alwaystimeforcoffee · 05/02/2016 10:05

I imagine it really does depend on the type of hair you have. I can't imagine not washing my hair though so I doubt it would be for me!

Knackeredknitter67 · 05/02/2016 10:16

I have been stretching out the time between hair washes. I used to wash every day, and now was it weekly. It does seem to be less greasy and the condition of it has improved. The last day or so can be a bit difficult, and I don't think I will be able to keep it up on the hottest days of summer.
However my hair is less frizzy, has more body, and is easier to manage.

Higge · 05/02/2016 10:17

I used to sit beside a girl at class in Uni - she was of the hippy persuasion and she didn't use any cleaning products on her body, hair or teeth. She had a faint hum about her - not truly stinky - I guess she smelled musky.

RudeElf · 05/02/2016 10:19

I think some people are also more sensitive to smell than others so what would bother me mightnt bother other people. I do notice smells on people and i think it makes me paranoid about making sure people arent smelling the same smells from me.

handslikecowstits · 05/02/2016 13:34

I can usually smell mucky hair. It's horrible and hair attracts other smells such as food so I imagine I'd be able to smell their hair and I'd find it grim.

If I don't wash my hair every couple of days, it itches so much I feel like it's going to walk off my head! Yuck.

RosaDiaz · 05/02/2016 13:46

Conditioner is supposed to have cleansing properties also albeit less harsh than shampoo.
I think that's the idea behind co-washing, not no washing - just washing with conditioner only.
Not brave enough to try it though...

AwkwardAnnie · 05/02/2016 14:03

I don't use shampoo on mine or my sons. His hair is gorgeous, lovely and soft always looks clean even though it only gets a rinse with water every few days. He had bad eczema as a child so we couldn't use shampoo and we just got into the habit.

My hair is curly so doesn't look lovely and soft like his but it's in much better condition now than it was when I used shampoo. Much less dry. I use coconut oil to tame it. I've tried the curly girl method but never found a conditioner that suited me. The first 3 weeks were hard.

I do use shampoo on my daughters hair. Hers is very similar to my sons but because I've used shampoo on it I have to continue. After 4 days it looks greasy and needs a wash. My sons is never like that.

jamtartandcustard · 05/02/2016 16:16

My hair is so dry I can't even go 4 days without conditioner or it ends up in such bad knots that can only be cut out (fond childhood memory there!). I wouldn't even try no shampoo.
I only shampoo my ds's hair once a week but they are 4 & 6 so no yucky teenage hormones yet. Also they aren't sport players so don't go out getting sweaty either. Bathed and rinsed every other night but only shampoo once a week.
I guess it all depends on the individual

hollinhurst84 · 05/02/2016 16:44

Rosa - I use a cleansing conditioner which is sort of in between shampoo and conditioner
Using this one at the minute which is moisturising enough for even my dry curly hair! Palmers do a nice one too

Oops didn't realise that link would be so long!

cece · 05/02/2016 20:10

I don't use shampoo. Just rinse through and 'wash' with loads of conditioner. I then comb it through and leave it in for 5 mins. Finally rinse it out. I then wrap it micro fibre towel for at least half an hour.

I never comb or brush between washes. It is curly and very dry if I use shampoo.

Loads of us 'Curly Girls' don't use shampoo, but as others have said up thread, we still WASH our hair - just with conditioner (called Co-washing).

You really don't need to strip out all the oil - just get rid of the general muck that builds up. It really is fine and not at all gross.

Junosmum · 06/02/2016 15:36

I only was mine every few weeks. I had fine, lank, greasy hair until I started doing this. It's much thicker and glossier now. I wet it and condition the ends about once a week. It doesn't smell.

hollowlegs · 06/02/2016 15:38

How often do people with weaves wash their hair?
I'm sure I read somewhere that it isn't advisable to was frequently, but I may be wrong Confused

I can never go more than a few days before washing my hair.
I can always tell when DH's hair needs washing. Unwashed hair starts to smell after a while.
