Actually, posts have been quoted (both with and without attribution) in national media before.

I agree that we're not that important. But it's a quick way of getting seeing what people are saying, and it's no secret that journos quarry here.

If only M&S senior management did the same.

ifancyagreencard · 08/01/2016 18:31

Hmm being the girly swot that I am, I sent the link to M&S. Here's the chat:

^You: I'm sure they are monitoring SM at the moment anyway but there may be some info in this thread that is genuinely of interest to the organisation
You: Some of the comments are really valid
You: to bring back the old M&S we loved :-)
Bradley: I can email our social media team with the link. However, we don't usually monitor third party comments. If you have the product code for these trousers I can certainly contact our suppliers!^

Hmm "not monitoring third party comments". Umm, perhaps they should start !!

Well, at least we know what Twiggy would look like on Call The Midwife Confused.

I've never understood who Per Una's target market are. No-one in their 20's would go near it, nor would my aunt (early 80's) or anyone I've ever met in between.

That said, M&S did use to do good quality basics that would last for years. Now, I can't get trousers to fit. It's not just needing to go up a size, being too small, too big etc. It's odd things like a baggy waist/tummy region combined with too tight legs or vice versa. I'm not that oddly shaped Confused.

Tops are all too short for me also. I'm tall. All M&S t-shirts and jumpers are crop tops on me.

The look is more Call the Pathologist Smile

As a not particulary fashion conscious middle aged woman who wants to look vaguely presentable, M&S should be my Go To shop, especially as there is a large out of town one on my way home from work, so really appeals to my desire for low effort shopping.

But no, it isn't because they always sell out of size 12s before I get there.

The tops are always too short and wide. I don't really like any of the colours used. Lots of pale wishy washy blues and pinks. I see quite a few things that I like the style but hate the colour.

Hate the way that each type of clothing is spread out all over the shop in the Autograph/Per Una/Limited sections. If I want trousers, I want them all to be together.

I've bought socks there, but they are awful quality and I've thrown them away after a few wears.

And the bloody click and collect downstairs and at the back. Do they think if you're just popping in to pick something up, you will welcome using time you don't have for a browse too?

Didn't they invite a load of Mumsnetters in for a focus group a year or so ago? What happened, did they take anything on board? Or apparently not, according to this thread, and it is probably damn obvious that jkie-from-falkirk isn't a Mumsnetter Grin.

cecinestpasunepipe · 08/01/2016 18:43

Since she was a little girl, dd2 and I have played a game when out shopping, competing with each other to find the most hideous clothing or accessory items. She is now in her 30s and lives near a large branch of M&S, a particularly rich source of merchandise for our game. The trousers in the OP have featured highly, as well as a matching blouse in the same fabric. The costume jewellery section also provides us with much amusement.

horseygeorgie · 08/01/2016 18:44

I've email Steve Rowe the link to this thread. Can't hurt!

BarbaraofSeville · 08/01/2016 18:45

To be honest, I need to give up with M&S, it's clear they don't want me.

Their clothes are far too apple shaped for me. I've worked out that I'm a size 8 shoulders (tops of dresses are always far too big), size 12 norks, size 10 waist and size 14 hips in M&S land so I have no fucking chance of fitting into their clothes.

ABetaDad1 · 08/01/2016 18:51

The sad thing about M&S is that it has almost universal brand recognition, shops that are well sited, a fast growing online presence, loyal staff and a customer base that is fairly well off demographic that really like its food store and café and regularly visit its stores.

Any retailer would give their right arm for that kind of starting position and yet M&S dramatically miss the mark in its clothing department.

I go in every week to shop for food and never visit any other floor.

This might sound bizarre but I suggest M&S look at the classic basic clothes on the Ralph Lauren website and do that in spades but at half the price with good old M&S quality. It can be done.

For men, nice (single) coloured jumpers in wool and cotton, cords, chinos, socks, pants, t shirts, good quality stiff and button down shirts. Quilted coats, raincoats, overcoats, outdoor wear, classic style shoes. Well cut suits and jackets. Stay away from fashion.

Go in a shop in Oxford called Walters on Turl Street. Its all there to copy.

My local M&S on three floors looks like the M&S of my childhood. Nothing has changed. Surely it cant be that hard to deliver from such a good starting point.

The alternative is for another retailer to take it over or continue a long slow decline like Woolworths.

var123 · 08/01/2016 18:58

I was thinking they should go for Boden - well made clothes, that are well designed, and you can expect to last.

But if I could have one wish, it would be to get rid of the tops that don't cover my midriff when i move my arms.

(and deal with that shrink in the wash problem)

Behooven · 08/01/2016 18:59

Do you remember Jaeger Boutique? Quirky takes on classic styles in good materials that appealed to loads of different aged women who just wanted to look nice

Oh, cross posts there - we are all wanting the same thing though!

shinynewusername · 08/01/2016 19:02

M&S need to give fashion to whoever's in charge of beauty. Their Beauty dept was once only good for bluebell-scented talc for great aunts. Now it has been completely de-naffified with interesting brands, but it still has something for all ages/tastes and all budgets. The only thing wrong is that it suffers from the M&S stock blight - the good stuff is permanently sold out.

WitchWay · 08/01/2016 19:02

Barbara yes too apple shaped for me too - the stuff used to fit me well about 20 years ago & I haven't changed shape

Horrible cheap fabrics mostly now, & nasty "old lady" colours.

Trying to find nice pyjamas that were actually 100% cotton, didn't have daft sparkly bits in or great fleecy tops & were an actual size rather than 8/10, 12/14 & 16/18 meant I bought elsewhere this winter.

Merguez · 08/01/2016 19:03

ifancyagreencard I am staggered that a company the size of M&S does not monitor what's said about it on social media - I would have thought that was a business necessity in this day and age!

Behooven · 08/01/2016 19:11

It's a bit of arrogance then if they don't.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/01/2016 19:12

I must be their Perfect Customer Grin Blush

5'5"
14 top
12 medium length rump (I bought size 12 knickers but I could've done with a 10)

My legs fit their boots , my hands fit their gloves
I am in my 40s (late 40s. Well 50 this year)
Prepared to buy things that will last a bit, I don't do fashion.
I am quite happy for someone to recognise I'm in M&S.

I like Indigo and buy leggings/jeggings from the range. But I was in a large M&S and everything was all over the shop.
I don't want to look in 5 areas for a white shirt. I want them all together so I can compare.
I don;'t want to be head to toe in Limited or Indigo (never Per Una, haven't bought any of that)

Behooven · 08/01/2016 19:15

But 70s would you wear THE TROUSERS? Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 08/01/2016 19:18

'I can email our social media team with the link. However, we don't usually monitor third party comments.'

Yet I bet they spend ££££ annually canvassing the opinions of focus groups of existing customers.

So silly.

gerbo · 08/01/2016 19:21

Shiny, Edith and ppeat thank you. I feel better. I'm 38 and feel I'm losing my way in fashion terms, too damn busy with work and kids to ever walk in a shop and browse so I took a punt online and seems I had a lucky escape!

Agree wholeheartedly though with the moan about the various 'collections'. I suspect I'd buy their old-school stuff happily for the next 30 years were it as it used t be - I Iike a classic, simple but NOT frumpy style - love the black jersey dress above, for example.

Hope someone from marks reads this....

Purplehonesty · 08/01/2016 19:27

I'm 35 and my mum is 60
She works in a non dressy office environment. I'm a mum to young kids and have a cafe.
We go out occasionally and like 'nice things'
Between us we should probably be able to find something wearable in the shop right? Office wear, casual clothes, a nice dress, jeans maybe?
Nada. Not one thing in the whole shop.
It's all sequins and ruffles and nasty colours or fabrics.
Then you spot a lovely navy jumper and thing oh perfect for the school run/to wear to work. Size 20 available....Oh great!

MotherofFlagons · 08/01/2016 19:30

There's an M&S near my work. Every now and then I pop in for lunch, but have to walk through part of the clothes bit. If you do a kind of sweeping glance across it all, it sort of looks OK. But then you go and investigate actual individual items.

Then....

Ah.

hollyisalovelyname · 08/01/2016 19:33

Cerseirys I agree that suede skirt was vile. My cousin wore one in 1976 and I still remember it because it was so awful ( and I was almost a babe in arms).

Elizabethreallyismissing · 08/01/2016 19:40

Now I'm going to stick up for them a little bit!
A lot of their Autograph range shoes & boots are fantastic! Leather, high heels but comfortable to wear for a day at work or a night out and a reasonable price!
The flared jeans they stocked last spring were bang on trend, comfortable & very flattering!
They had beautiful tomoto red roll neck jumper this autumn but it sold out before I got one & I usually manage to find a nice knitted dress iin there every winter! Oh and their leather gloves are fab usually in the right co!our for autumn trends & reasonable!y priced I've got loads of those BUT
The website is awful
They need to sort out their co!ours _ this autumn they had a nice !long sleeved Jersey cowl neck top but it was available in lemon of turquoise!!! Why? Why not black , grey navy?
And yes I agree about the layout of stores, it's awful!

reni2 · 08/01/2016 19:42

I thought a lot of the trousers and skirts would make great statement curtains and the coats some very loud sofas Grin
