Thanks for link MI. I'm interested in everything that provides context.

GiddyGiddyGoat · 08/01/2016 20:21

Yeah. inspiration

Lalsy · 08/01/2016 20:23

[hyperventilates]. Perfect, thank you Grin.

Collymollypuff · 08/01/2016 20:31

I thought the point about Kipling was that he was Mr Jingo, figurehead of the whole jingoistic mood of the moment, and that is why his son had to go to the front. Because of Kipling's image, fundamentally.

Stropperella · 08/01/2016 20:35

Or just a bloody long scarf, Lalsy. Grin

BTM - congratulations to ds and his team.
MI, am watching your glasses selection procedure with interest, as my face and features are teeny-weeny and my glasses are usually too wide for my face, altho the current prodesign frames are not too bad. I think.
Dd saga continues, with the local NHS now pulling out all the stops to try and communicate with her. She's still having none of it.
I hate the commute, but my new place of work is simply epic. I don't think I'll ever make much money there, but everything else is great. Except that ds has been browsing the sumptuous school website and is now of the opinion that he should go there. As a boarder. Dream on, son.

Today, I went to an osteopath, which meant paying good money to have my bum squeezed and my back cracked by a very large man. An interesting experience.

Auriga, I am very sorry to hear about your dsis's results. And I salute your immense patience with your Dm.

Cremo · 08/01/2016 20:48

Or lots of diff colour mini squares Lalsy.i have done a few like that , but not since hands have become arthritic and lumpy. Hottie covers as well, and leg warmersGrin

Sorry I can't see your spec selection MI, but just wanted to say, the ones I wear, are sunglasses that I persuaded my optician to convert. There are also some great sites with vintage frames, if you fancy that route for complete individuality. ici

Very interesting chat about WW1. My gf and his 5 brothers all fought at the Somme. My GF was wounded after going over the top and ended up in the same hospital as his brother who was a medical Officer. The brother arranged a 'ticket' for my GF on the basis of injury( he didn't want him patched up and sent back to the front) and got him shipped home. My gf had lied about his age. he was sixteen, and his big brother made sure he was safe. While he was in the military hospital he met my GM, a nurse and refugee from Hungary. they were married for 60 years.none of my GF brothers came home.

I have been to price a kitchen. Holy moley, it's dear. I don't know what I expected but 'to Asheville it done properly' is £££££££

Given up on that plan. Back to doing things ourselves ( cf holidays)
In my world Kipling=French Fancies

That would allow a lot of box sets watching Stropps. So glad you like your new place so much, and that dd may be getting some help.

Yes, Molly. His attitudes seem incredibly jingoistic. I have read other accounts of (perfectly reasonable sounding) families feeling shame if their sons were not at the front - I don't think we can imagine the impact of the sort of emotional blackmail used. [http://www.kiplingsociety.co.uk/rg_kent_flothow.htm This]] is interesting I think - how the Kiplings became part of the dominant story. I will stop now!

Lalsy · 08/01/2016 21:03

Crem, what a story. And yes about kitchens. They seem like weddings - you have to find out how much they cost without telling the salesperson you wnat one.

Cremo · 08/01/2016 21:06

Ashville wtf? Having

bigTillyMint · 08/01/2016 21:09

Stropps, your job sounds great! Well worth the wait and the not £££ pay to feel happy I think. And great that CAMHS are stepping up with DD.

Lalsy, I was going to say a scarf (like a never - ending square? But GGG's suggestion and link looks great. Cremo, how horrid that you can't really knit now - I find it so relaxing.
Our kitchen was from Howdes and is holding up OK so far!

Yes to MU with those overseas!

DD has just come back from the cinema with bf - who'd have thought she'd actually enjoy Star Wars!

Lalsy · 08/01/2016 21:15

I thought Asheville was a posh kitchen supplier Grin

Stropperella · 08/01/2016 21:18

My cousin has had an exhibition in the Museum of Flanders Fields in Belgium to do with the Battle of Loos. (as Lalsy knows Grin) Among other stuff, there was also a fair bit of info on display about my maternal gm's family. There are pics of me, ds and dd. Sadly, there is also a book containing the same pictures.

bigTillyMint · 08/01/2016 21:20

So did I!

I'm not sure what my grandad did in WW1 - he was definitely in the army (cuz has a pic of him as his fb profile pic and they look spookily the same) but there are a few pics of him dressed as a clown. I think he was in the entertainment corps. And maybe catering?

Stropperella · 08/01/2016 21:23

Ah, no, don't get me wrong: dd is still refusing to interact with anyone. GP apparently rang on Wed and asked to speak to her, but she refused to take the phone from dh. GP had now sent letter to say they have a Consultant Psychiatrist coming to the surgery just for her and will she let them know if she can attend. She still says they can all eff off. Frustrating, much?

bigTillyMint · 08/01/2016 21:26

Stropps surely one of them could come and sit outside her room till she opens the doorGrin

Lalsy · 08/01/2016 21:34

Frustrating beyond belief, Stropps. I hope they wear her down, but am glad anyway they are trying to act - let them knock their heads against the wall for a bit. And Grin at photos in the book. My family were mostly asthmatics with flat feet but two great uncles were at the front and came back with either shell-shock or the standard issue family bonkersness, depending on your viewpoint.

Cremo · 08/01/2016 21:40

Bugger Stropps, that's tough. But ThanksStar to your GP for giving a Sh1t.

Up for a march April post Easter MU perhaps.?? Don't mind if it involves Mr Kipling or Batemans cafe where they obviously must serve exceedingly good cakesCake

Stropperella · 08/01/2016 22:46

According to the new government guidelines, I have already drunk enough alcohol for this year. And possibly next year as well. This is ... disappointing.

CointreauVersial · 08/01/2016 22:58

Grin at Strops and her bum-squeezing osteopath. I could do with a bit of that.

Well done to your DS, BTM. DS's school are now out of the nationals - he was furious, envisioning days off school to travel to far-flung matches. His league team are still in the County Cup, though.

Strops - sorry to hear DD still refuses to engage. Fingers crossed the professionals persist....

My GF was also in the trenches; came home with shrapnel in his thigh, but no other ill effects. He was 17 when he joined up. While in hospital recovering from his injury he embroidered a beautiful regimental crest, which DDad has since had made into a cushion cover. I can't imagine a teenager hospitalised today doing such a thing.

Knitting - no, not me. One of my BFs actually teaches knitting, and is part of a group of "guerilla knitters" who creep out at night and decorate local landmarks with knitted accessories (Strops will possibly be familiar with a certain steel cockerel which stands on a roundabout near here which is often decked out). She knitted a Christmas wreath for her front door this year.

I have just been helping DS write a CV! There's not a huge amount he can put on it, really, but we've done our best. He wants a new PC, which has sharpened his resolve to get a job and earn some cash. We will be visiting a few local establishments tomorrow to see if he can find one.

Cremo · 08/01/2016 23:47

Gosh cv, that's amazing about the embroidery. Those boys were so young. Did your gf ever talk about the war? My df says his father never ever talked about it. I feel such sadness that I was far too young to have had the chance to know him properly, as both he and my lovely gm died in '78 within a week of one another.Sad

Collymollypuff · 09/01/2016 00:00

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Boy_Jack_(film)

All about Jack Kipling.

Collymollypuff · 09/01/2016 00:55

I have gorn mad inviting those of you I can find to friend me on FB. I shall resume the quest tomorrow. Please excuse me for being such a beginner.

CointreauVersial · 09/01/2016 00:57

No, GF didn't like to talk about the trenches ("best left in the past") but he did enjoy grossing out his grandchildren by getting us to feel the shrapnel in his leg. He died when I was at university, so I did have the chance to get to know him as an adult.

In contract, uncle was a Wellington bomber pilot in WW2, and loved telling tales of his derring-do. Which you would think he had made up, but he really hadn't, as we found out at his funeral. He was shot down at least twice, spent two days in a life raft on the Med, was a prisoner of war in north Africa, and once landed a plane which had a bomb jammed in the mechanism underneath. He landed, the plane exploded, and the entire crew apart from himwere killed. He was blown through the nose cone and walked away without a scratch. All before he was 20.

Cremo · 09/01/2016 07:24

Wow Cv what a story! How incredible. Shock
