Party outfit for six year old girl - HELP PLEASE!

Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:25

I have searched and searched for a Christmas outfit for my nearly 7yo DD. She is very skinny and we have tried on lot of pretty skirts which all fall down . And pretty tops which look lovely on the hanger but are too low on her scrawny little neck . Have tried Next, Boden and Debenhams - all the seperates are too big and the dresses too dressy IYKWIM.

She has one outfit which is actually a summer dress from primark ( a bargain at ?6) but looks ok as its dark purple. Will do at a push but she would like something new

Any ideas please? In terms of style we want less dressy/more cool than a bridesmaid dress but not like she's going clubbing / on the game

Hmm it is a bit tricky isn't it at that age. My DD is only 2 so we still stick her in a party dress for Christmas. I can see a time when we will have an issue though. Have you tried H&M - I just wonder if they would fall into the cool but not tarty category.

foxinsocks · 14/12/2006 11:29

Zara/H&M/M&S

got dd a lovely dress in Zara. She too is v skinny so I find dresses are easier to get because we have to either buy adjustable waist skirts or skirts a few sizes smaller (which are then often too short iyswim).

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 11:30

How about this ? Zara also have some pretty stuff atm. H&M good for pretty but not tarty girls clothes.

hermykne · 14/12/2006 11:31

GOT A GORGEUS VELVET PINAFORE FOR MY DD IN zARA!
AND THEIR SIZING IS NEAT

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 11:31

And there's always Monsoon .

Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:36

oooh I never thought of zara . didnt even knwo they did kids clothes as the branch near us is only womenswear. will check it out

jackei - what is tansen? have never heard of them but I'm not a fashionista....have you used them?

sorry also tried h & M but maybe went too early as it was still all the bright pink ornage and green autumn stuff. last time we tried on every single pair of trousers in the shop and they were all too big. left with two pair of bootleg leggings in weird colours that dont go with anything

Have to say I haven't actually used Tansen, but their stuff looks lovely - was recommended by someone on MN ages ago, and I keep looking at it. Actually if you're after something rather more traditional (with a twist), you could also have a look at another site I saw mentioned on here a while ago, but haven't actually used - Tulip and Nettle .

foxinsocks · 14/12/2006 11:39

some of their stuff is dowdy - but they had a few skirts that I thought were nice. I think it depends on the size of the M&S - we have a HUGE one here so get all their children's range - loads more than is on their site.

If you can find a Zara with a children's bit, it's definitely worthwhile having a look. I find their sizing is v small - my 6 yr old dd needs a bigger size than their 6-7 and I wouldn't say she was particularly tall. I think their best age range (zara) is the 2 - 7 yr range. Some of the 7+ stuff is good but not all of it.

fox in socks - your Dd sounds like mine. we have the same thing with skirts. even the ones with adjustable waists ( like maternity trousers) end up on the last button all bunched up and she finds it uncomfortable / annoying. she has to wear a pinafore to schol as i cant get a skirt to fit her

OP posts:
Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:43

she coudl probably wear an age 7 as she is 116cm

jackie - I love the Famous Five type stuff from tulip and nettle but its not for DD...sadly she has her own opinions on clothes

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 14/12/2006 11:44

yes that's the problem we have (my ds is the same). When you have to put the adjustable waist on the smallest button, it just becomes too uncomfortable!

The other sorts of clothes that fit dd well are the posh French stuff (like petit bateau). Their sizing is more in line with her shape. But their stuff is ludicrously expensive so I normally wait to fish some of it out of 2nd hand stores!

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 11:45

Yes, they get that way, don't they, Kristingle. Don't you have a DS you could dress up in their shirts and knickerbocker thingies ?

Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:47

no - do not wish to spend ££££££ for an outfit to be worn half a dozen times. although was prepared to spend more than £6

also tried matalan ( after recommendation here) but was cheap and tarty. ditto asda now she is too big for 2-5 year range

OP posts:
wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 14/12/2006 11:47

My DD is 2 1/2 and a lovely Zara skirt I bought for her in the outlet in an age 2 just falls down when she walks literally. So I can see I am going to have problems with her....

Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:47

oh yes jackie I have a one year old AND a two year old DS!!!

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 11:48

There you go then - they're too young to put up a fight just yet about what they're wearing.

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 14/12/2006 11:49

And I agree about some of the Asda stuff being tarty these days. Even in the 2-5 range there were stuff that was totally unsuitable IMO. DD has ended up with a dress from Tesco (would not suit your criteria but is lovely for her) and a cream cardigan from Monsoon which was £££ but can be worn with other outfits and in the summer also.

Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:51

...though not sure how Dh woudl cope ! he has been biting his tongue as 2yo DS has taken to wearing his sister's nurses outfit around the house. and pushing a pram. and breast feeding his teddy

Dh really REALLY wants to say something I can just tell. but I give him the evil eye and my " its just a phase dont make an issue of it" look.....

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 11:52

. They do adult clothes too....

Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:54

oh teh tesco stuff for Dd was HORRIBLE!!!! All pink combats and t shirts with graffiti style glitter slogans

even the stuff for 2 year old boys had "geezer" written on it!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
Kristingle · 14/12/2006 11:55

do they jackie - not sure if they would fit Dh as he is over 6' and XXL

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 14/12/2006 11:59

(as an aside, Kristingle, you might try those wrapover kilt-type school skirts like this as you can snip the buttons off and sew them on again further round to make the waist as small as you need)
