I have never heard as much chat about Debenhams - surely the SHITTEST shop in the world, as on here in the last few weeks

SO own up - who works for Debenhams social media company?

The York one is the worst. You keep waiting for the actual shop to start, but it never does. The whole place is just edges.

Wonderful description.

Ours is surprisingly ok. It's clean, has decent homeware, perfumes, lingerie and kids' clothes. The staff are nice, too.

Think it does depend where you live. The bigger stores are better. Lots of makeup ranges, I like their homeware , lingerie and bags. And they always seem to have a sale on!

This is the perfect description of the newly opened Wandsworth one. I didn't hold out great hopes but yeesh. Even the Clapham Junction one is better.

My local one is huge, four floors. Still looks like a jumble sale.
I can't put my finger on what is so bad about it. I think there is no cohesive design and its tatty round the edges.

You can smell cabbage as you go up the escalator in our Debenhams. Was a bit surprised to see them mentioned on here in hindsight. They need to get air conditioning fixed.

Agee the design is poor.

I buy one of their bras, they're not bad. But good god, the rest of the shop is fairly sad.
And the shop assistants? Oh my. At least in my local one. Any requests for assistance seem to be just an annoyance, getting in the way of their entitled tea break. Or certainly getting in the way of something far more pressing than me. Cats bum mouth in a hair-do. Most peculiar.

I so often wonder who shops there. And then I remember I buy a bra there, so clearly me.Grin

Agree OP, I have never seen so many links to Debenhams as recently.

Nettle I agree with you re CS.

In the Wimbledon store their bra fitters were often helpful and nice... But the beauty ones were either on a huge sell and the perfume the same... The perfume ones were slightly better...

When I compare the perfume SAs in Elys to the Debs they were much better - better trained I think.

When I was in Oxford St Debs end of last month it was at lunchtime but I went to buy a bra. No one around to help me at all re sizing and fit (as they don't or rarely do my size 28FF). Woman in fitting room couldn't leave her post but very nice about it. SAs at tills 3 of them there yet only 1 was knowledgable about my size, what I wanted etc... Would they go to help me look for my size?! Would they heck! Grin. In total I bought 2 nude bras about £30 mark, a Maidenform slip same price and would have bought or ordered more bras from there if they'd been a bit more helpful. There was also HARDLY ANYONE (eg customers) AROUND sorry for shouting when I paid....

Upstairs in clothing concessions I bought a dress (beaded dress, Miss Selfridge) and top hardly anyone around then either eg SAs.

The most prominent and pushy SAs I found were the MAs and perfume assistants there.

shedragon in Oxford St one they were handing out cakes etc (the sample bits) - I commented one was delicious and they pointed out where the cafe was to me. Likewise helpful when I wanted to find the ladies toilets.

I went to my local one yesterday. Needed maternity tights for a black tie do ie not thick black opaques, and a nice black maternity bra to wear under my dress and give me a smooth shape . It's really difficult to find stuff like this on the high street so I was pleasantly pleased to get what I needed. We had a drink and lunch in the café and a quick browse On the other floors. I think department stores still have their place on the high St.

Olivia - the Savannah Miller range is great! I bought a dress from there for £45 and wore it out last week and can't remember the last time I've had so many compliments on a new item of clothing. It looked a lot more expensive and was incredibly flattering. Annoyingly this particular dress isn't online for some reason but it was a knee length black one with sheer embroidered sleeves and a sheer embroidered panel at the neckline.

I usually prefer John Lewis but Debenhams has the odd gem. And the make-up counters aren't bad either - the Clapham Junction branch has a Mac concession.
