Lip Balm to stop horrendous dry lips, invading rest of face. What's the best?

DS1 is sporty and this cold weather is making a mess of his lips. He has various balms and vaseline and puts them on regularly but we haven't found one to help prevent this.

It's getting him down as they look such a mess.

Best ones to prevent or to fix it?

Blistex relief cream, I swear by it, my boys all use it too. It's the best. I think it's supposed to be for mild cold sores but it stops normal chapped lips in their tracks.

Or Honey trap by Lush but it's like 5 pounds for a teeny little tin.

FrustratedFrugal · 24/11/2015 17:38

I've used Nuxe, Lansinoh, Aquaphor. They all are good, the Nuxe jar requires a spatula, but I also like simple beeswax based sticks. Sometimes people are allergic to lanolin or some other lip product ingredient. If this is the case, his lips will be even more sore after application.

SoftBlocks · 24/11/2015 17:40

Nivea Hydro Care in the pale blue tube. It is really good, cheap and doesn't make your lips soft by peeling top layer of skin off as I have found with Carmex. Also really try not to lick your lips.

carolinemoon · 24/11/2015 17:47

I second trying hydrocortisone too, there is apparently such a thing as "lip lickers dermatitis", and the hydrocortisone (applied sparingly) will help to get rid of it, then you can use the other products to stop it coming back.

Will any of these also help with cracks at corners of the mouth?

Carmex also for cracks. And oranges. Often Vit C related!

Silverstreaks · 24/11/2015 20:57

Carmex, the one in a pot is best.

Dowser · 24/11/2015 21:28

The very best product I've ever found is pink germolene.

Marvelous stuff. Not the white that dries. The pink moisturisers, protects and heals.

petitdonkey · 24/11/2015 21:41

I swear by Lanolips - it will cure horrible cracked lips overnight. (It's just pure lanolin so I guess the same as the nipple cream)

Boots and Waitrose stock it.

gruffaloshmuffalo · 24/11/2015 21:47

Carmex works for me.

Also, when it's really bad, I put hand cream on my lips last thing at night. Always works a treat

CointreauVersial · 24/11/2015 22:13

What FrustratedFrugal said - DD1 tried all of the above products, but her lips got worse and worse...turned out she is allergic to lanolin. Poor thing suffered for months before we figured it out.

If you ever need to avoid lanolin, Neutrogena and Nivea are excellent.

Tate15 · 24/11/2015 22:45

Lush ultra balm comes in a tin and doesn't look girly.

Works well too!

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 24/11/2015 23:09

Snowfire
Buy it on Amazon as its difficult to find in chemists
Check it reviews
It's not a cosmetic . it's cheap. It works.

meep · 24/11/2015 23:16

I used to get cracked lips with a red scaly rash under my bottom lip. Blistex was the only thing that soothed it. But the miracle cure.....changing my toothpaste. Turns out I'm allergic to SLS, which is in most toothpastes. Changed to Sensodyne ( the basic one) and I've never had a problem again.

NeverGoOutOfStyle · 25/11/2015 01:58

Nuxe reve de miel really is the lip balm to die for, I love it, my mum loves it and my brother (19 now) uses it and we all love it, always one to be found in this house and like was said before, its matte so doesn't have that glossy look some balms have (also really nice under lipsticks)

dontpokethebear · 25/11/2015 02:03

I'm glad I'm not alone in using Lansinoh on my lips. It's the only thing that doesn't aggravate my weird itchy, sore lips thing.
Perhaps you could buy one of those little travel pots and decant some into there for him?

auldspinster · 25/11/2015 12:24

I find Bepanthen works a treat.

Pancakeflipper · 25/11/2015 19:26

Pink germoline!! Not seen that for years. Does it still smell the same?

Bought some nipple cream as was in our little chemist. Going to do as you sensible folk suggest and decent into a little pot and not tell him what it is mainly used for but I know someone who swears it sorts out her blisters

Carmex during the day and metanium nappy rash cream at night. Metanium basically cures all skin issues!

madmomma · 25/11/2015 23:51

Lanisoh, but get some of those tiny clear pots and decant it so noone knows it's nipple cream. Lanisoh is the only thing that saves my lips in winter

madmomma · 25/11/2015 23:52

Duh! Read thread before repeating what everyone else said!

burnishedsilver · 25/11/2015 23:56

For cracks at the side of the mouth my chemist recommended lrp cicaplast b5 baume. It worked a treat.

Limer · 26/11/2015 00:00

Zinc is superb for healing broken/raw skin. Sudocrem is chock full of zinc. You must remember how good it is on nappy rash? It's fantastic for any dry skin or chapped lips.

PurpleDaisies · 26/11/2015 00:04

Yet another vote for carmex in the yellow tube with the red lid. Absolutely brilliant stuff for a bargain price.
