chopping off all my hair...

Has anyone else gone from long to super short? Please convince me that I'm not going to instantly regret it!
I have mostly had long hair, with the odd foray into bob territory, throughout my life. It is currently half-way down my back and I am crushingly bored with it. I have structural ishoos that make proper blow drying with a brush agony and because I have such thick long hair it takes hours to dry naturally. DH adores my long hair but I am beginning to feel like a scarecrow! I'm considering something drastic, like a long pixie cut (Meg Ryanish).
My only concern is that I don't want to look even remotely frumpy, or worse still - like I have gone for a practical woman-of-a-certain-age haircut (like my aunt the nun!). I'm rapidly approaching 40 and getting the "You look like your mum" fear. She has shoulder-length straw for hair and I am petrified of any more comparisons because she is a vile person

I had this dilemma back in February - and interestingly enough there were the same people harping on about short hair being aging.www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please#prettyPhoto

I do not regret it one bit. After years or long or bobbed hair I have discovered that it is actually liberating to remember that hair grows! So if you don't like it you can change it...OK not instantly..but at some point.

I am growing mine again - but purely out of interest as I chopped mine to get rid of the dye and am intrigued as to what it will look like longer with my grey streaks.

if you do go for it Pinterest what you do like and what you don't like.

Lol at bread crusts. How many bloody dried crusts did I eat in my childhood pursuit of curls....

hiccupgirl · 02/11/2015 21:36

I love the idea that one hairstyle is automatically ageing for all woman...what a load of rubbish.

Like Floisme getting my haircut from a long bob to a pixie cut is like an instant facelift. It just works so much better with my face shape. Longer hair pulls my face down. But I would completely agree that short hair is better if you are slimmer. I've had long and short hair at 3 stone heavier and the longer hair hid the chubby face better.

If you fancy a change then going for a messy short layered bob might be a good start and you could go shorter if you wanted to later.

itsmeohlord · 02/11/2015 21:37

IF you can't manage your long hair you should get it cut - but doesn'[t have to be super short. Beware the Pat Butcher effect.....

ouryve · 02/11/2015 21:40

Asteria if you suffer with CFS, you definitely wouldn't miss the weight, if you had it lopped off, never mind the effort of caring for it.

Asteria36 · 03/11/2015 00:11

I think I'm going to go for a shaggy short bob to start with. I have been blessed with big eyes and good cheekbones, but am now concerned that my nose may let the side down Grin It still gives me a good amount to donate to the little princess trust.

ouryve not actually cfs - but very similar. It is a big factor in going for the chop.

My nose is my worst feature, Asteria and I still look better with short hair Grin

Notoedike · 03/11/2015 07:35

I got a pixie cut about six months ago. The compliments I've had have been numerous and genuine....people were quite surprised by how good I looked with a crop. The difference it's made to my face is around my eyes - they look lifted, my face is more interesting than pretty but it's small. I can see quite easily in photos taken since that the crop suits me better than the bob.
Reactions to crops on his thread are interesting, they seem to threaten convention all over again. I don't mind sticking my fingers up to that, I met dh when I had a crop, he loves it too. I find my hair so easy to style now - I wash it less and stick a bit of paste in it, sometimes I clip the fringe away from my face.

iwantgin · 03/11/2015 07:58

i have had various hairstyles over the years. Long/short/in between.

Until earlier this year I had my naturally dark brown hair just below shoulder length. Then had a fringe cut in.

I was bored - and saw pics and thought it made my face look 'tired'.

So got it cut.

this is my most recent 'do'.

I am in my late forties- and think I look significantly longer. Wouldn't say I am classically pretty - but it works for my face shape.

It's only hair. It grows.

Iwantgin Your hair looks great!

Asteria36 · 03/11/2015 08:29

Your hair looks fab iwantgin. I'm not quite that brave, but you just reminded me that I have a cousin with v similar bone structure and she has a very similar cut (minus the fab quiff!) so I reckon short isn't going to be the disaster that some on here have predicted! Besides, it will grow - I'm so bored of playing it safe all the time.

Oh go for it! Short hair can look fabulous, uplifting, fresh, stylish and different. Ignore the ones saying it ages you, if you go for a Sheena Easton C 1980 the yes, that will age you but I'm guessing that's not on your radar. I find my make up looks fresher as well when I have short hair. Let the masses have their safe haircuts, you dare to be different.

TheDowagerCuntess · 03/11/2015 08:39

I'm amazed that anyone can think a pixie cut (for instance) is aging on everyone. it's just so blatantly not true. And I say this as someone who has recently grown one out, as I couldn't get on with it.

Someone women look amazing - so much better, even - with short here. And yes, of course, younger.

Salene · 03/11/2015 09:51

Noooooooo don't don't do it

Asteria36 · 03/11/2015 10:10

Thank you for that concise argument Saline Grin

MangoBiscuit · 03/11/2015 10:54

"Don't don't" ? Double negative huh? I think Salene is telling you that you HAVE to have it cut! Grin

Asteria36 · 03/11/2015 11:21

My thoughts exactly Mangobiscuit
The hairdresser will be here in a couple of hours and I have a creeping feeling that the flipping DSC have left some of their fecking "friends" in my hair... Joy of joys!

MangoBiscuit · 03/11/2015 11:31

Oh no. Even the thought make my head itch.

HoneyDragon · 03/11/2015 12:22

Hair cuts aren't ageing ... Getting old is.

Fact is you won't know if it suits you till you try, and you clearly fancy s change. Just get a gorgeous hair cut that will make you happy.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 03/11/2015 12:32

CO-washing, otherwise known as the curly girl method. Suitable for any length of hair.

I'm a straighty, but DD is curly.

Lottapianos · 03/11/2015 12:48

Fabulous hair iwantgin! Suits you perfectly

I have big coarse curly 3b hair. I went from bra strap length to a short cut in June and I absolutely love it. I look a lot younger and it suits my face shape. It takes a third of the time to wash and style that my huge mane used to. My DP hates it but I don't care - he will get used to it! maybe

Totally agree that there are no rules about short hair - it may well look ageing on some but definitely not on everyone. Judi Dench is a fab example - she's not a classic beauty and doesn't have a 'perfect' face shape but she wears the hell out of her silver crop and has done for years.

Winniethewylde · 03/11/2015 13:01

I'd say do it. I had long wavy hair and had it all cut off last summer, I had a very funky cut and loved it, had so many compliments and was so easy to style. It's now a choppy Bob length purely because I get bored easily but wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I took this photo to my hairdresser and he got it bang on. Loved it.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/11/2015 13:18

Get advice for sure.

I've got or had longer fine highlighted hair (too much bleach and was breaking off). Saw another hairdresser and got a longer asymmetric bob cut in, I could have gone shorter with that cut and it would suit me or grow again but the thing is, it suits me as much as a longer layered cut! I also got the colour sorted out and toned down. No more bleach or not as much.

I've done the long hair to short layered cut and recall taking forever to grow it back again! Even though it looked good.

There are tons of options. You need a good hairdresser. Ask for recommendations if your current one isn't 'cutting the mustard'.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/11/2015 13:19

Just saw your recent posts... Go shorter gradually. Seriously.
