Tips for great skin

My skin looks like absolute crap at the moment. I have suddenly had a breakout of spots, my skin is looking tired and dull - can you please give me some advice on treatments or products that you use to make your skin look great

OP posts:
Nabootique · 28/10/2015 20:43

Hot cloth cleanse, acid tone (salicylic acid if you're spotty), vitamin c serum for dullness, light reflecting primer. What's your skin type and budget?

TimeToMuskUp · 28/10/2015 21:58

Drinking endless amounts of water is the cheapest thing guaranteed to improve skin. I use Liz Earle's hot cloth polish, it's pretty cheap when you consider how long a tube lasts and is mild enough to clean every scrap of dirt from your skin without leaving it sore or tight.

Washing makeup brushes often, throwing away old crappy makeup and never touching your face with your hands are said to help, too. But I'm a lazy cow and do none of those things, just drink the water instead.

Openup41 · 28/10/2015 22:11

I second timetomusk at drinking LOTS of water.

PurpleDaisies · 28/10/2015 22:16

For me, exercise that gets me really red and sweaty makes my skin miles better. A very good side effect of body combat!

MadGhostlyGnome · 29/10/2015 03:54

Making sure you get every scrap of makeup off at night went a long way to sorting my skin out. As in, white face cloth, nice warm water, no make up coming off on to cloth by the end.

mumchkin · 29/10/2015 04:29

Clarisonic brush. I never get a spot if I use mine every night.

fishpieandmash · 29/10/2015 11:24

Diet is the best "trick" IMO.

Learn to love oily fish, 4 portions a week sounds a lot but sardines/mackerel/salmon/kippers all count so find good combinations of these.

Lottapianos · 29/10/2015 16:06

What you put in your body is at least as important as what you put on your skin IMO. So - double cleansing, with a flannel, a moisturiser that suits your skin and sunscreen every day but also:

  • cut way back on sugar
  • watch the booze and caffeine
  • loads of water
  • plenty of fruit and veg
  • avocados, carrots and nuts do wonders for my skin
  • as much sleep as you can manage
  • exercise every day - a brisk walk is great, but get even more sweaty if possible
Coastingit · 29/10/2015 23:16

No sugar, lots of water, fish oil supplements.

shutupanddance · 29/10/2015 23:20

My skin looks so
Much better when I eat loads of fruit and veg.

DaylightSnobbery · 30/10/2015 15:25

Water
Fresh air
Sunblock
Take off make-up before bed
Good genes

lavazzzalover · 31/10/2015 08:21

water.
good regime.
decent moisturiser.

AliciaMayEmory · 31/10/2015 08:31

Someone on here posted about how a make up artist said to put on shed loads of moisturiser before make up. I was previously of the mind of if you put loads on hour make up would slide right off your face, but I've been trying it for the last 2 weeks and my skin is looking so much better. I don't use overly expensive products, just a day cream with SPF and night time serum from superdrug, but the difference is marked. I also use the hot cloth cleanser from superdrug, which is just as good as the Liz Earl that I used all the time previously, and then a micellar cleanser before the serum at night. Skin is plumper and is on the way to glowing!

OooooohMissDiane · 31/10/2015 08:41

I hardly do anything and have nice skin. I've discovered a vit c wash can do wonders and loads of water. I just don't fiddle and apply oil of Ulay before make up.

EWLT · 31/10/2015 08:42

I find, the less I do to it the better my skin is.

I've had spots all my life but ATM it's pretty good. Of course that could be because I've finally grown out of them as my Dad promised me I would Grin

Hot Cloth cleanse using something very gentle and simple - I'm using aqueous cream and I do it twice for the "double cleanse"

Olay or Simple basic moisturiser, all the "anti-aging" ones seem to give me spots, including Olay and Simple.

Lots and lots of water to drink. Opinion seems to be split on whether this helps, but I definitely see a difference within a few days of doing it properly.

Cutting out refined sugar makes a big difference too.

I know lots of people love it but LE C&P was the single worst thing I have ever done to my skin. It brought me out in huge, red, painful spots/lumps

Wolpertinger · 31/10/2015 08:47

What Nabootique said.

No evidence for anything else. If you can't be bothered to hot cloth cleanse you can just use Cetaphil. But Salicylic acid and Vit C will make way more difference than anything else you do and are far less effort. Fancy moisturiser is over-rated.

If you then want to step it up a level get a retinol.

That's it. Plus use sunblock to stop it getting any worse.

amazonianwoman · 31/10/2015 09:19

Any vitamin C serum recommendations please??

AliciaMayEmory · 31/10/2015 09:55

Not a serum, but I've been using Super Racialist vitamin C + skin defence daily moisturiser which is lovely. Body shop alsomdomvit C stuff but a bit more expensive.

AliciaMayEmory · 31/10/2015 09:55

*also do

AliciaMayEmory · 31/10/2015 10:00

Sorry, it's Super facialist (what an autocorrect) by Una Brennan. I got it from boots and at the minute is half price!

fredabear · 31/10/2015 10:09

Ive recently started using indeed hydraluron serum following rave reviews in several places and it is certainly living up to the hype. Other skin boosters - diet and exercise.

Glitteryred · 31/10/2015 11:52

Keep your routine simple for now but do use la roche posay effaclar duo moisturiser after cleansing and toning as it is really good at clearing up spotty pimply skin. I would just use the la roche posay range till your skin clears up.

Once your skin has cleared up then introduce a different cleanser as your skin will have changed and you can start using serums or facial oils and a different moisturiser as the effaclar will now be too drying on your newly improved skin.

Glitteryred · 31/10/2015 11:56

Good luck with it all and yes take fish oil supplements, drink shed loads of water and really do cut out sugar as well as a healthy diet.

It will improve your skin no end and any cellulite you may have will also start to go.

You will have to be patient and give it all 2-3 months to see an improvement but you will and it will last forever.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 31/10/2015 12:04

Echo what's already been said about diet and drinking lots of water.

Soap & Glory hot cloth cleanser is great and not too expensive.

lavazzzalover · 31/10/2015 14:29

I use Avon Reversalist. Great for my skin. but I've treated myself to Clinique Moisture Surge for the winter months. im out a lot and my skin does get a battering.
